Formation and Divisions

Burke County was created in 1777 from the south western part of Rowan County.

Buncombe County was formed from part of Burke in 1791.

Yancey County was formed from part of Burke in 1833.

Caldwell County was formed from part of Burke in 1841.

McDowell County was formed from part of Burke in 1842.

Status of Records

Burke County has suffered massive record losses, mainly due to the Civil War, when in 1865, many records were burned by Union troops.

I have been to and through Burke County many times, but have stopped to do any research. All my research there (so far) has been "remote" via the NC Archives or via published records.
