History, Formation and Divisions

1839. Cherokee County, North Carolina was formed in 1839 from Macon County.

1861. Clay County was formed from Cherokee County.

1872. Graham County was formed from Cherokee County.

Availability and Location of Records

The Cherokee County Court House burned in 1865. Many records were lost.

The 1840-1930 Census records are available for this county (except 1890).
