Craven County, North CarolinaFormation and Divisions | Status of Records | My Ancestral Names | Web Links | Books Available Formation and DivisionsArchdale Precinct was created in 1705 as a division of Bath County. In 1712, Archdale Precinct was renamed "Craven Precinct". In 1739 Bath County was dissolved, and all former precincts, including Craven, were designated "Counties". Carteret County was formed from part of Craven in 1722. New Hanover County was formed from part of Craven in 1729. Johnston County was formed from part of Craven in 1746. Jones County was formed from part of Craven in 1778. Pamlico County was formed from part of Craven in 1872. Status of RecordsAs far as I know, Craven County has not suffered any major record losses. I have been to Craven County several times, but have never made it to the Court House to do any research. All my research there (so far) has been at the library and also "remote" via the NC Archives or via published records. Note: There was also a "Craven County" in South Carolina, and other than the name, it has nothing to do with Craven County, NC (this causes some confusion, so I thought I'd mention it).
