Dobbs County, North CarolinaFormation and Divisions | Status of Records | My Ancestral Names | Web Links | Books Available Formation and DivisionsDobbs County was created in 1758 from Johnston County. Dobbs was abolished in 1791. Wayne County was formed from part of Dobbs in 1779. Dobbs County was abolished in 1791 by being divided into Lenoir and Glasgow (now Greene) Counties. Status of RecordsDobbs County has suffered major record losses, due to a Court House Fire in the 1870's. When Dobbs County was abolished in 1791, the records were moved to the new county seat of Lenoir County in Kinston. Those records were almost totally destroyed in a Court House fire (arson) in 1878. I live in what used to be Dobbs County. Although the Lenoir County Court House has no records pertaining to old Dobbs County, there are some available locally. At the Lenoir Community College Library, there is a very nice genealogy library called "Heritage Place" which has numerous old Dobbs County records, as well as numerous other records and books. I have been there hundreds of times, and always find something new with each visit. It is not just a genealogy "room" in a library, but a library unto itself, larger than most small town public libraries!
