Orange County, North CarolinaFormation and Divisions | Status of Records | My Ancestral Names | Web Links | Books Available Formation and DivisionsOrange County was created in 1752 from Bladen, Granville and Johnston Counties. Chatham County was formed from part of Orange in 1770. Guilford County was formed from part of Orange in 1770. Wake County was formed from part of Orange in 1770. Caswell County was formed from part of Orange in 1777. Alamance County was formed from part of Orange in 1849. Durham County was formed from part of Orange in 1881. Status of RecordsOrange County has suffered at least one Court House Fire, but many early records are still available. I grew up in Orange County, and spent a lot of time in the Court House. It is nicely organized. In fact, there are two Court Houses, the "old" one and the "new" one (next to each other). However, the Deed Records are located at the Tax Office which is about a block away in another building. The Public Library is also very nice, and has a nice "North Carolina Room" with lots of books. Although Hillsborough is the County Seat (and location of Court House and Library), Chapel Hill is also in Orange County, and is home to the University of North Carolina. They have an excellent Genealogical and Historical Collection at the Wilson Library there.
