Watauga County, North CarolinaFormation and Divisions | Status of Records | My Ancestral Names | Web Links | Books Available Formation and DivisionsWatauga County was created in 1849 from Ashe, Caldwell, Wilkes and Yancey Counties. Mitchell County was formed from part of Watauga in 1861. Avery County was formed from part of Watauga in 1911. Status of RecordsWatauga County has suffered some records losses, due to a Court House Fire, I believe. I'm not sure when this was, nor what records were lost. I've been to Watauga County one time, but did not go to the Court House. ASU (Appalachian State University) is there in Boone, and they have a good genealogy and history library, I am told.
