Researcher Lists

Genealogy
Each surname section of my website has a researcher list
(if any researchers are known.) For my own ancestral lines, the Researcher List
is a page unto itself. In other cases it is simply a section of a larger page.
There will be names and e-mail addresses listed for
each researcher of that line who has asked to be included. Sometimes other
contact data is included (snail-mail, phone numbers, websites, etc.)
I only list the additional contact data when specifically requested.
Caveats:
- I don't have to already know you for you to be
listed. If you are interested in a particular family line you can be
listed, just let me know and I'll add you as quickly as I can.
- You don't have to contribute any information to
be listed. Being listed does not indebt you to me (or me to you) in any
way, shape or form.
- Being listed does not imply that you agree with
any conclusions that I have drawn about any particular family or any
other data or opinions I have on my pages.
- Being listed does not mean that I endorse any
of your conclusions or opinions about a particular family, etc.
- The primary purpose of the list is so that
other researchers can find you and contact you so you can share notes
about your common family or interests.
- You are responsible for letting me know about
any change of name or address. I occasionally purge out entries with
invalid e-mails. I have no way of knowing when a person changes their
address unless someone lets me know about it.
Getting yourself Listed on a researcher list If you would like your name listed, please give me
the following minimum information:
- Your name.
- Your e-mail address.
- Which researcher list you are interested in (I have
hundreds, so I need to know which one!)
- What branch of the family should you be listed
under, I need to know where to place your name within the family tree (if
applicable). Also,
if you want your lineage listed for a few extra generations, I can list it
in Parenthesis after your e-mail address. Consider this example:
Mary Smith = email @
yourisp.com (John Smith-James-Mary m. Isaac Thompson). From
this example you see that researcher Mary Smith is a descendant of John Smith
through his son James, through his daughter Mary who married Isaac Thompson.
I will also list (upon request) your snail-mail (postal)
address, fax number, telephone number, your website address or any other data
that is appropriate for this kind of list.
If you do not have your own e-mail address,
(perhaps you use a library or friends computer, etc) but still want to be listed
as a researcher, I can list your name and snail-mail (postal) address, so you
can still be included.
Getting Removed from a list
To be removed from this list, simply
e-mail me and ask to be removed. I will gladly
remove your name and contact data as quickly as possible.
If your name, e-mail or other data has changed,
please let me know and I'll update the list.
(Be sure to let me know which list you are on, for I have hundreds of them.)
Invalid ("Bounced") e-mails
If you try to contact someone on one of my lists and the
mail is returned, please let me know, and if possible, I'll try to find out the
new information, though admittedly, I have had terrible luck trying to find
people online when they change their e-mail address, unless they let me know
themselves.
Privacy and Spam Protection
Since being listed on a researcher list is by its
very nature Public, you waive any right to keeping your name and e-mail
private otherwise what is the point? I do promise that I will not use
your e-mail address for anything other than listing it on the site for
contact purposes, or perhaps contacting you myself if needed, though
only for genealogical purposes.
Spam protection is not easy. The thing I'm doing on
newer pages is to not list the email address as a clickable link. Therefore if
someone wants to contact you they'll have to cut and paste your address and then
remove the spaces themselves. This is a small measure to protect your email
address from being collected by "spam bots" (programs that scour
the Internet looking for e-mail addresses to send junk mail to). However this
isn't foolproof as spammers are very clever at their evil business.
Commercial Considerations
My researcher lists are not geared towards
advertising. However, if you have a book or something that directly
relates to the family in question, I'm not adverse to letting it be
advertised on the researcher list. Just let me know about it. I wouldn't
charge anything for this, though it would definitely have to be related to
the family pages in question.
