Craven County, South Carolina

History (Formation and Divisions) | Availability of Records | Web Links | Books Available | My Ancestral Names

History (Formation and Divisions)
Craven County was created in 1682 as a proprietary county in South Carolina.
Craven existed (with no government) until 1769 when all South Carolina Counties were dissolved and replaced with smaller Judicial Districts. Until that time Craven covered a huge portion of South Carolina.

Availability and Location of Records
Craven County (like all proprietary counties in South Carolina) had no government of its own, and its only purpose (as far as I can tell) was as a geographical division. All records in those days were kept at Charleston, South Carolina. Today, I suppose they can be found at the SC Archives.
