History (Formation and Divisions) |
| Craven County was created in 1682
as a proprietary county in South Carolina. |
| Craven existed (with no government)
until 1769 when all South Carolina Counties were dissolved and replaced with
smaller Judicial Districts. Until that time Craven covered a huge portion of
South Carolina. |

Availability and Location of Records |
| Craven County (like all proprietary
counties in South Carolina) had no government of its own, and its only
purpose (as far as I can tell) was as a geographical division. All records
in those days were kept at Charleston, South Carolina. Today, I suppose they
can be found at the SC Archives. |
