History (Formation and Divisions)
1798 - Formed from Georgetown District, effective 1800.
1868 - "Marion District" became "Marion County."
1868 - Townships established within Marion County (Bethea, Carmichael, Manning, Marion, Reaves, Wahee, etc.)
1888 - Florence County formed from "West" Marion and other counties.
1910 - Dillon County formed from "Upper" Marion.
 
Availability and Location of Records
Marion County has not had any major record losses as far as I know. However, as with most of SC, no birth, marriage or death records were kept officially prior to the early 1900's.
Census records available: 1800 thru 1930 records are all extant, excepting 1890 (I do census research for hire if you are interested)

The Marion Public Library has a nice Genealogy / History room. It is small but contains many interesting books.
