Special thanks to Vera Kirkman, Gayle Licari, James Creech (deceased)
and others for data shared on this family.
Richard Roberts was born ca 1789/90 (per 1850 and 1860 census)
in Wayne Co, NC (per 1850 census), probably somewhere in the Walnut
Creek vicinity, if his parents are who I think they are. This is east of
present day Goldsboro, NC.
Richard Roberts is probably a son of
Henry Roberts and --- Nixon of Wayne Co, NC. I have not found any
solid proof that Richard is their son, but family tradition among some
of his descendants say his father was named "Henry", and it does fit
with known circumstantial evidence, though there are also some problems
with putting Richard in Henry's family. I will say that if Henry turns
out not to be Richard's father, then I have no idea where Richard
belongs.
Richard Roberts was born ca 1789/90. This approximate birth year is
based on several census records. In 1830 Richard was age 30-39 (born ca
1790-1800), in 1840 he was age 40-49 (born ca 1790-1800). In 1850 he was
age 60 (born ca 1789-90). In 1860 he was age 70 (born ca 1789-90). All
of these are in perfect symmetry for someone born in the year 1790.
However, in 1870 he was age 82 (born ca 1787-88). This last one is the
only one not in agreement with the others. So based on 4 census records,
I'd say ca 1790 is a very accurate birth year for Richard. It is very
unusual for a person to have such as consistent age through so many
census records!
So the 4 out of 5 census records confirm Richard being born ca 1790,
only one confirms he was born in Wayne County. The 1850 census for Wayne
County was divided into two sections, the region North of the Neuse
River and the region South of the Neuse River. The census taker for the
northern region only listed the state of birth for each person, however,
the census taker for the southern region listed the county of birth
(leaving blank those born in Wayne County). Richard's birth place was
listed as blank in 1850, implying he was born in Wayne County.
There is a problem with placing Richard Roberts in Henry Roberts'
family. Mainly his birth date. Henry was born ca 1775/80 based on his
own census records, and this would make him (at best) 15 years old when
Richard was born in 1790. This isn't impossible of course, but it does
raise a lot of questions. Henry Roberts in 1800 was aged 16-25 (born ca
1774/84) but he did have a male with him then age 10-15 (born ca
1784/90), which could easily be Richard (1790).
In 1810 Henry Roberts was age 26-44 (born ca 1765/1784) and he did
have an apparent son with him aged 16-25 (born ca 1784/94) which fits
well for Richard (1790).
In 1820 Henry Roberts was age 26-44 still (born ca 1775/94) and he no
longer had a male child Richard's age with him. In 1830 Henry was age
50-59 (born ca 1770/80). To reconcile all of Henry's census records, I
come up with ca 1775/80 as a birth range. Of course he could be older
than that.
Since Richard Roberts seemed to be with Henry Roberts in 1800
and 1810 census, that adds circumstantial evidence to him being Henry's
son. In 1820, Henry had no one with him Richard's age, but since Richard
would have been 30 then, he could have been anywhere, and probably was
living with some one else as a hired laborer.
The late James Creech (whom I never met nor corresponded with) wrote
a short history of the Roberts family. His wife was a descendant (I
believe) of Richard Roberts. This paper (probably written in the 1960's)
listed Richard's parents as "Henry Roberts" and "Nancy Smith". Other
evidence clearly shows that Henry wasn't married to Nancy Smith. James
gave no evidence for showing Richard to be a son of Henry Roberts, but
the fact that he did list it that way, shows that he thought it was
true, for whatever reason. At this point in time, I no longer remember
whether or not I had independently concluded Richard was Henry's son, or
whether I got it from James Creech's research when I first saw it
(shared with me by Vera Kirkman and Gayle Licari). In any event, it
seems Henry is the only choice to be Richard's father. There just wasn't
any other candidate in Wayne County at that time. (If it turns out
Richard wasn't born in Wayne County, then that opens many other
possibilities). Richard did name his first born son "Henry" so that
helps, but doesn't prove anything, for Richard's wife's father was also
named "Henry."
I don't know if we will ever be able to prove conclusively that
Richard Roberts is a son of Henry Roberts, but I'm sticking with it for
now, as the best possible theory. If anyone has any other theories,
please let me know about it.
For the 1790 census, providing that Richard was already born when the
census taker came around, he would have been less than a year old, so he
should be enumerated in the "under 16" age group. In Wayne County in
1790,
John Roberts (c1748) was the only Roberts listed, and he had 5 males
under 16 with him.
For the 1800 census, Richard would have been about 10 years old, so
he should have been enumerated in the 10-15 age group (born ca 1784/90)
or possibly in the "under 10" group (born ca 1790/1800). There were
three Roberts in 1800 Wayne County, and all three had possible matches:
John Roberts (c1748) had 1 boy 10-15, and 2 under 10;
Henry Roberts (c1775) had 1 boy 10-15; and
Wright Roberts (c1765/74) had two boys under 10. Wright was a son of
Richard Roberts (c1726) of neighboring Duplin County, NC. He is
certainly a possible candidate to be father of Richard (1790), but for
various reasons, I've never thought he was a strong candidate, but he
should certainly be considered.
For the 1810 census, Richard would have been about 20 years old, so
he should be enumerated in the 16-25 age group (born ca 1784/94). In
Wayne County,
Henry Roberts (c1775) had an apparent son that age with him, and he
was the only one in Wayne with an apparent son that age.
For the 1820 census, Richard would have been about 30 years old, so
he should be enumerated in the 26-44 age group (born ca 1775/94). None
of the Roberts in 1820 Wayne had someone his age living with them. At
that age he could have been anywhere. In 1820, only Henry Roberts
(Richard's suspected father) and an unidentified John Roberts (1775/94)
were listed in Wayne County. I have often wondered if this "John"
weren't actually Richard, but incorrectly enumerated. It would explain
several things. Richard did name one of his sons "John Richard Roberts",
so perhaps that was his name as well (though middle names were rare in
someone born in 1790).
Richard Roberts married Rebecca Hobson before ca 1825 in Wayne
Co, NC. I don't know what proof there is of her maiden name. Vera
Kirkman shared this name with me, and it is from the death certificate
of one of Richard and Rebecca's children. In any case, she is most
likely a daughter of
Henry Hobson and his wife Fairlise Braddy, who lived near the
Roberts family, as they were the only Hobsons in the area.
Richard Roberts may have married prior to 1820, for the 1830 census
shows him with one apparent daughter born ca 1815/20. It is possible
that this isn't a daughter, but someone else instead, or that she was
born ca 1820.
Richard Roberts was listed on the 1830 census in Wayne Co, NC.
Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so we can't determine where
he lived exactly, nor who his neighbors were. He was the only Roberts
listed in Wayne County for this census year. (Henry, his probable
father, moved to Franklin County, Alabama in the late 1820's).

Henry Roberts, Richard's suspected father, died in 1831 in Franklin
Co, AL. It seems that he died still owning land in Wayne Co, NC. If
Richard was his son, it would be logical to assume that he inherited
some of it, but I've found no record of such. I have not found an estate
record, or anything like that for Henry in Wayne County, and
unfortunately, Franklin County, Alabama is a burned county, and most of
the early records are lost.
Richard Roberts was listed on the 1840 census in Wayne Co, NC in
Indian Springs District. He was listed between Jesse J. Baker and Joseph
Kornegay. Joseph Kornegay was Richard's cousin-in-law, having married
Margaret Roberts, daughter of Richard's Uncle
John Roberts. Next to Kornegay was
William Hobson (Richard Roberts' brother-in-law). A little further
down the page was John Braddy, another brother-in-law of Richard Roberts
(half brother to Richard's wife Rebecca). Based on the various
neighbors, I have tried to determine where Richard Roberts was living at
this time, and although I don't have it pinpointed yet, I suspect it was
somewhere in the vicinity of Emmaus Church Road, where some of his
children were known to live later on.

Richard Roberts and family were listed on the 1850 census in Wayne
County, still apparently in the Indian Springs District, though this
census didn't give that information. They were listed in the region
South of the Neuse River. Brother-in-law
William Hobson was next door as before. Richard Roberts was listed
with no real estate value, meaning he owned no land. If he did inherit
anything from Henry Roberts, then he had sold it or lost it by 1850. (I
found no deeds for Richard Roberts in Wayne County). William H. Herring
was Richard's neighbor on the other side in 1850, and he owned property,
so he may be the closest neighboring land owner to Richard. Joel Lewis
was nearby and he was a landowner as well. Perhaps by examining their
land records (Herring and Lewis), we can determine almost precisely
where Richard Roberts was living at this time.
Though I list "Wayne Co, NC" as the birth place for each member of
this family, the actual census record was blank in that column, meaning
"ditto" for the previous birth place listed was "Wayne Co, NC" several
households earlier.

Richard Roberts and family were listed on the 1860 census in Wayne
Co, NC in Indian Springs Township. This census showed him with $75
personal property, but with no real property (land). Richard had some of
the same neighbors as in 1850, so he didn't seem to have moved during
the interim. His Post Office was listed as Jericho, which, if I
understand it, is present day Seven Springs, NC.

Rebecca Hobson Roberts died 6 Dec 1862 (per family bible record). Her
burial place is unknown.
In 1870 Richard Roberts was residing with his son Elcana Roberts in
Wayne Co, NC in Indian Springs Township. The very next household shows
an Ann Roberts age 42 with several children. Her last name isn't given,
but is "ditto" for the previous family, which is a Roberts. I don't know
who she is, nor how she is related to Richard. For the sake of
discussion, I'm including her listing here as well, as it seems
relevant. I think the ditto mark is actually a mistake and Ann isn't a
Roberts at all, but I haven't been able to figure out who she was.

Richard Roberts died on 18 Mar 1875 (per family bible record). I
don't know where he and Rebecca are buried. None of the published
cemetery records (fairly extensive) for Wayne County show them, so they
probably have unmarked graves.
Richard Roberts' name appears on the 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860 and 1870
census. His death is recorded in a family bible. Other than those, I
have found no original records with his name on it. Perhaps something
will turn up someday shedding a little more light on this family. |

Unknown Daughter
was born ca 1815/20, presumably in Wayne Co, NC. An apparent
daughter this age was with Richard Roberts for the 1830 census. Since
Richard wasn't found on the 1820 census, I can't be sure if she was with
him at that time or not. She was not with him for the 1840 census, so
perhaps she married or died by then. |

Henry Roberts
was born ca 1825/26, presumably in Wayne Co, NC, presumably
in Indian Springs District. He was apparently with his parents for the
1830 and 1840 census. I have no direct proof that Henry is a son of
Richard Roberts, but he lived near him, and it is really the only place
he fits. I have no doubt that he is Richard's son, but I can't prove it
conclusively.
For the Mexican War (1840's), Henry Roberts enlisted in the Militia
company of his cousin Captain Henry Roberts (son of
John Roberts) in Wayne Co, NC. Henry Roberts was often listed as
Henry "Jr" to distinguish himself from his cousin Henry who was just a
few years older, and lived nearby.
Henry Roberts married Eliza --- before ca 1845 in Wayne Co,
NC. I have no clues as to her maiden name.
On 17 May 1847 Henry Roberts witnessed the Will of James Peal in
Wayne Co, NC.
On 8 Aug 1848 Willis Hall sold Henry Roberts "Jr" 179 acres of land
in Wayne County, NC. The land was on both sides of the Railroad (in or
near present Mount Olive). Witnesses were William J. Hall and W. Edwards
(Henry's brother-in-law
William Edwards). (Wayne Co, NC Deed
Book 21 page 140).
Henry and family were listed on the 1850 census in Wayne County, NC.
He was listed in the region South of the Neuse River, probably in the
Mount Olive area. His neighbors on either side were the Anthony Price
family and the William Wiggs family. His brother-in-law
William Edwards was just a few households away.

Henry Roberts left Wayne Co, NC and moved to Horry District, SC
around 1855 or so. I didn't find a record of him selling his Wayne
County land. His brother-in-law
William Edwards left at the same time, and he lost his land in a
court action due to debt, so Henry may also have lost his the same way.
I haven't checked Court records yet.
I don't know what attracted Henry Roberts and William Edwards to
Horry District, SC. There were numerous Roberts families already
residing there, apparently since the early 1800's. If these were close
relatives, I haven't been able to determine just how they were related.
It may be entirely coincidental, and there is no relation between the
Horry Roberts and our Wayne County, NC Roberts.
Henry Roberts and family were listed on the 1860 census in Horry
District, SC just a couple of pages from brother-in-law William Edwards.
They were somewhere in Western Horry in either the Gallivants Ferry area
or in the Dog Bluff or Floyds area. For some reason, "Eliza" was listed
as "Louisa" on this census. I've seen these two names used
interchangeably numerous other times (in various families), and I'm not
sure why that is the case, except that they sound something alike.

Nancy Roberts
was born ca 1827/28, presumably in Wayne Co, NC, presumably
in Indian Springs District.
Special thanks to Vera Parker Kirkman for data shared on Nancy
Roberts' family.
Nancy was apparently home with her parents for the 1830 and 1840
census in Wayne County, NC.
She married Joseph Parker ca 1847 in Wayne Co, NC. For some
reason they moved west to what is now Harnett County, NC prior to 1850.
At that time Harnett was still part of Cumberland County. (Harnett was
formed in 1855 from Cumberland). Numerous other Wayne County families
moved to Cumberland County, so it was a fairly common place to move to
from there. Perhaps some of the Parker family had already moved there. I
know that Nancy's uncle William Hobson moved there before that, but came
back to Wayne, then back to Cumberland again. I'm not aware of any of
the Roberts moving there.
The Parkers were listed on the 1850 census in Cumberland Co, NC in
the Eastern Division of that county. They had no real estate, so didn't
own land there at that time. A 72 year old John Carruth was residing
with them. I don't know how he is related, nor if he is related. He
could be related to Joseph Parker.

According to Vera Kirkman, Joseph Parker died at Yorktown, VA in the
Civil War on 9 Aug 1861. I don't have the details of his service record.
Widow Nancy Roberts Parker apparently couldn't handle all the
children on her own, especially since she just had one a few months
before Joseph died. So they were "farmed" out to her siblings. Vera
Kirkman has spent years tracking them down since they were mostly raised
apart.
I don't know where Nancy was residing for the 1870 census. Vera says
that at some point she moved to Wilmington, NC and that is the last we
know of her, except that she married a Mr. Holloman as a 2nd
husband. I have searched for Nancy on the 1870 and 1880 census and have
had no luck finding her. There were Holloman families in Wayne Co., NC,
but I don't know if her husband was from there.
For the 1870 census, I didn't find Reddin Parker, their oldest
child, nor could I find him in 1880 or 1900.
The next child Rebecca E. Parker. In 1870 she was back in
Wayne Co, NC residing with the James and Eliza (Newell) Grant family.
(James Grant is a son of
Jesse Grant) The Grants were neighbors of the Roberts, but I don't
know how this family was related. However, in 1870, Rebecca was 17, so
her living with the Grants does not imply a relationship, she could have
been a hired housekeeper instead. Vera shows that Rebecca married C.
W. McClammy and that Rebecca died in 1896 in Wilmington, NC. I found
them on the 1880 census in New Hanover Co., NC.
The next child was Sarah A. Parker. After the death of her
father, she was sent to her aunt (my ancestor)
Rachel Roberts Edwards, who by then had moved to Horry District, SC.
Sarah Parker remained in Horry with the Edwards family. She was with
them for the 1870 census. She married Arthur B. Leonard in Horry
and they both died there, Sarah in 1922.
The next child was T. L. Winney Parker. After her father's
death, she was sent to live with her aunt
Rebecca Roberts Fields in Wayne Co, NC. She was with them for the
1870 census. I couldn't find her in 1880. I don't know when, who, or if,
Winney ever married.
The last child born to Joseph and Nancy was John William Parker,
born in 1861, just a few months before his father died. After his
father's death, John William was sent to live with his Uncle
John R. Roberts in Wayne Co, NC. He was with John R in 1870 and 1880
census. John William married Rosa Ellen Howell in 1883 in Wayne
Co, NC. These are Vera Kirkman's ancestors. Rosa died in 1916. John
William married 2nd to Polly Mozingo in 1917. She died in 1922
and he married 3rd in 1923 to Florence Cotton, his 1st cousin
(daughter of
Charlotte Roberts Cotton). John W. Parker died in 1936 in Wayne Co,
NC, and his wife Florence in 1945.
Many thanks to Vera Parker Kirkman for much of the data I have on
this branch of the family. |

Rachel Roberts
was born ca 1830/31 in Wayne Co, NC, presumably in Indian
Springs District. Rachel is my (Marty Grant) ancestor. I've not seen any
direct proof that Rachel is Richard's daughter, but family tradition
shows that she is, and circumstantial evidence is strong. Her maiden
name of "Roberts" is given on the death certificate of her son Gabriel
Edwards (died 1938).
Rachel was apparently home with her parents for the 1840 census in
Wayne Co, NC.
Rachel Roberts married
William Edwards ca 1846 in Wayne Co, NC.
They were in Wayne Co, NC for the 1850 census, just a few houses from
Rachel's older brother
Henry Roberts.
William Edwards purchased land in what is now the Town of Mount
Olive. For some reason, this land was taken away from him in a court
action (I don't know the details yet) in the mid 1850's. About this same
time they moved down to Horry District, SC and settled near the present
Town of Aynor in the Gallivants Ferry area. They remained there many
years. Rachel died there about 1873 or so.
See William's own page for more on this family. |

Charlotte
Roberts was born ca 1832/33 in Wayne Co, NC, presumably in
Indian Springs District. She was apparently home with her parents for
the 1840 census in Wayne Co, NC. She was with her parents for the 1850
and 1860 census in Wayne Co, NC. Charlotte was known as "Lottie", which
is a common nickname for "Charlotte".
I didn't find Charlotte on the 1870 census in Wayne Co, NC. She
wasn't with her parents or elsewhere as far as I could find.
On 4 Jun 1871 Charlotte Roberts married Ephraim Cotton in
Wayne Co, NC. They were found in Wayne Co, NC on the 1880 census in New
Hope Township.

Ephraim Cotton died 6-6-1918 age 84 years". |

John R. Roberts
was born 26 Jul 1835 (per tombstone) in Wayne Co, NC. There
is some debate among his descendants as to whether his full name is
"John Richard Roberts" or "John Robert Roberts". I have not found
a source document to prove it either way, but "John Richard" makes more
sense to me as "Richard" would be in honor of his father.
John was apparently with his parents for the 1840 census (age "under
5", born ca 1835/40), and with them for the 1850 census ("John R." age
15).
On 18 Nov 1856, John R. Roberts married Mary Jernigan
in Wayne County, at Anna Jernigan's home. They were married by William
Vernon. Mary was born ca 1836/37, daughter of Stephen Jernigan and
Charlotte ---.
They were listed on the 1860 census in Wayne County in Fork Township
(Everettsville Post Office).

John Lewis and Abigail Herring. Edna was widowed from her first husband
John M. Sanderson.
John and family were listed on the 1870 census in Wayne County in

in Wayne County, Indian Springs Township.
John R. Roberts died on 18 Nov 1913, and Edna on 30 Oct 1930. They
are buried at the Lewis Cemetery in Wayne County. This is off of Emmaus
Church Road on private property in the middle of the woods. The woods
have completely overgrown the cemetery, but the markers are still in
good shape. There are some wooden markers there that have eroded and
rotted away, so you can't tell who is buried there. Vera Kirkman, Gayle
Licari and I visited this cemetery a few years ago. We had a hard time
finding it, but eventually did. If you seek it out, try to get
permission from the landowner first (I don't know who owns it now).

Rebecca A.
Roberts was born March 1837 (per 1900 census) in Wayne Co,
NC. She was apparently with her parents for the 1840 census (age "under

12). On 1 Jun 1856, Robert Fields married Rebecca Roberts
in Wayne County at Richard Roberts' house. Robert Calvin Fields was born
7 Sep 1834 (per tombstone) in Greene Co, NC. I don't know who his father
was, but his mother was Elizabeth (---) Fields.
They were listed on the 1860 census in Wayne County in Indian Springs
