Susannah Roberts of Craven Co, NC

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to Susannah Roberts.

Susannah Roberts was apparently already widowed by 1711. I don't know who her husband might have been, nor what her maiden name was. Several of the records found on her in the 1710's may provide some clues.

At some point in 1711 Susannah Roberts filed a petition against Thomas Henry for an order to administrate her husbands estate. Unfortunately this record didn't say who her husband was. (Craven Co, NC Court Minutes Vol I, 1712-1715 page 2)

Sometime after the above 1711 record and 1713 Susannah filed another petition (no date was lsited) "praying for a letter of administration on her Mors. estate". I Don't know what "Mors" means, but that is what it said. Charles Hopton gave security on behalf of Sarah Wilkes and Susannah Roberts. (What is Sarah Wilkes connection to this?). (Craven Co, NC Court Minutes Vol I, 1712-1715 page 32)

On 18 Jul 1716 Susannah Roberts filed complaint against Robert Bond and his wife in reference to a legacy left to her children by John Wilkes, deceased. "He will pay Susanah Roberts the cows and calves in due to her children". (Craven Co, NC Court Minutes Vol I, 1712-1715 page 107)

The above records show that Susannah Roberts' husband (no name) died by 1711. They also show that she had some children and that for some reason John Wilkes had left them something (perhaps Wilkes was Susanna's father).

One interpretation of the above is that Susanna Roberts was a daughter of John & Sarah Wilkes. She (Susannah) was widowed by 1711 from Mr. Roberts, and her father John Wilkes died before 1716. This may not be the correct interpretation, but it is feasible. Other records may be available that shed more light on this.

It has occurred to me that perhaps Susannah was married to Andrew Roberts of Craven Co, NC, but a serious flaw in that theory is that Andrew was still alive until 1722. Perhaps her husband was a close relative of Andrew's.

Children

Susannah Roberts had "children" per the 1716 court record. I have no idea who they might be however.
