Dillard Stewart and Sarah Wallace of Haywood and Buncombe Co, NC

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) am a 3rd Great Grand Nephew of Dillard Stewart.

Special thanks to Betty Boyd, Willa Cooper and others for data shared on this family.

Dillard Stewart (also spelled Stuart) was born ca 1810/11 in Haywood Co, NC. He is a son of Noah and Nancy Stewart. I don't know who he might have been named for. It is suspected that his mother Nancy's maiden name was Dillard, but that is unproven so far.

I have not found any solid proof that Dillard was a child of Noah, but he did live near him, and he did name one of his sons "Noah".

Dillard was apparently home with his parents for the 1830 census (probably in 1820 as well, though Noah hasn't been located in 1820).

On 18 Mar 1832 Dillard Stewart made a land entry for 50 acres in Haywood County on Hominy Creek, bordering William Hampton and Noah Stewart. Thanks to Kathi Bobb for sharing this record. (Haywood Co, NC Land Entry Book page 304, number 34)

On 17 Aug 1834, Dillard Stuart obtained a marriage bond in Haywood Co, NC to marry Sarah Wallace (listed as Wallis), daughter of John Wallace (per the bond). David Miller was the bondsman.

By 1835, Dillard had moved his family (not far) into Buncombe Co, NC. He was listed as a voter in the 1835 Congressional elections. He was listed on the voter list in Buncombe Co, NC, Hominy Precinct as Dillard Stuard. His brother John Stewart was also listed on the same list, in the same precinct.

They either moved back to Haywood Co, NC by 1840, or else lived so close the border that they were listed in the wrong county, for they were in Haywood for the 1840 census.

In 1860, Dillard and family were still in Buncombe Co, NC. They were listed in the Town of Leicester. They had lots of extra residents with them, including "Sofa" (Sophia?) Wallace, probably Sarah's sister, and several young Stewart children, who were grandchildren of Dillard, born out of wedlock to two of his daughters.

For the Civil War, Dillard Stewart enlisted on 11 Sep 1861 as a Private in Company H, 29th North Carolina Regiment. He was listed as a resident of Buncombe Co, NC, born in Haywood Co, NC, age 53. He died at Jonesboro, TN on 10 Dec 1861 or 20 Jan 1862 (both dates given) of Fever.

His widow Sarah was listed as head of household on the 1870 census, still in Buncombe Co, NC, with a huge household, mostly of grandchildren. She was listed in Sulfur Springs Township.

I didn't find Sarah on the 1880 census, but there was a widow Sarah Stuart age 92 listed (born 1788) in Avery Creek Township, but I don't think this was her, unless her age was way off. This Sarah was with the P. J. Israel family (no known relationship to the Stewart family).

Children

Dillard and Sarah Wallace Stewart had several children, per the 1840 through 1860 census records. They also had many grandchildren, many born out of wedlock to their two unmarried daughters Jane and Lou Stewart.

Sarah Ann C. Stewart (c1835)

Nancy Stewart (c1836)

Lucinda Cordelia "Lou" Stewart (c1840-1930)

Emaline Stewart (c1842)

Rachel Stewart (c1842)

Jane Stewart (1843-after 1900)

John Dillard Stewart (1847-1931)

Noah Welborn Stewart a.k.a William (1849-1929)

Sarah Ann C. Stewart was born ca 1834/35 in Haywood Co, NC or Buncombe Co, NC. She was apparently home with her parents for the 1840 census, and with them in 1850 (listed then as "Sarah A.C.")

On 17 Jun 1854 Montraville Wright obtained a marriage bond in Buncombe Co, NC to marry Sarah C. Stewart

They were listed on the 1860 census in Buncombe Co, NC, but I can't find that listing right now.

Apparently, Montraville Wright died during the 1860's (Civil War perhaps?). Sarah was back home with her widowed mother for the 1870 census, though mistakenly listed under the Stewart surname. Her two children were there also, and also listed as Stewarts.

Sarah was listed on the 1880 census in Buncombe Co, NC under the name "Ann Wright". I don't have this listing yet.

Nancy Stewart was born ca 1835/36 in Buncombe Co, NC (or Haywood Co, NC). She was apparently home with her parents for the 1840 census, and with them in 1850 and 1860, and with her widowed mother in 1870. I didn't find her in 1880. Her age is fairly consistent between the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census.

Lucinda Cordelia "Lou" Stewart was born ca 1839/40 in Buncombe Co, NC (or Haywood). She was apparently home with her parents for the 1840 census. She was home with them in 1850, listed as "Lucinda" age 10 (c1839/40). She was not listed on the 1860 census, so at age 20 she may have been residing elsewhere.

She was back with her widowed mother by 1870, listed as "Lucinda" age 28 (c1841/42), like many people in the census, she was getting a little younger every 10 years.

On the 1880 census, she was listed as  "Lou" and was listed as head of household in Buncombe Co, NC. She was listed as age 26 (c1854), so she had gotten way younger. She was listed as a single woman, but had several children with her, listed as her sons.. They were in Buncombe Co, NC in Asheville Township. In the same household (but with a different family number) was her sister Jane Stewart

I didn't find Lou Stewart in 1900 Buncombe Co, NC, though I did find two of her children living there. Her son Noah wasn't found, so she might have been wherever he was, or else she had died before 1900.

She died on 25 Jan 1930 in Buncombe Co, NC.

The 1880 census proves three children for Lou Stewart. Willa Cooper also assigns these children to Lou based on family knowledge, obituaries, etc.

Noah Albert Stewart was born ca 1863/64. He was with his grandmother and mother in 1870, listed as "Elburn" age 8. No relationships were stated on that census. In 1880 he was with Lou Stewart, listed as "Noah A." age 16, and listed as her "son". He married Rosa Laws in 1881, and Lillie Smith in 1893. I didn't find him on the 1900 census, at least not in Buncombe Co, NC. He was listed as "Albert" in both marriage records.

Riley A. Stewart was born 16 Oct 1866. He was with his grandmother and mother in 1870, listed as "Riley" age 4, no relationships given. In 1880 he was with his mother Lou, listed as "Riley" age 12, and listed as her "son". He married Rosey Alice Randall ca 1884. They were listed on the 1900 census in Buncombe Co, NC.

Alfred Asbury Stewart was born 27 Aug 1870. He was not listed on the 1870 census, but was with his mother in 1880, listed as "Alfred" age 8, and listed as her "son". He married Mattie Smith ca 1892. They were on the 1900 census in Buncombe Co, NC.

Emaline Stewart was born ca 1841/42 in Haywood or Buncombe Co, NC. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census.

On 9 Jul 1857 William Elbert Lindsey (W.E. Linsy) obtained a marriage bond in Buncombe Co, NC to marry Emaline Steward

I haven't traced them through the census records yet, but will do that at some point.

Rachel Stewart was born ca 1841/42 in Haywood or Buncombe Co, NC. She was not listed with her parents in 1850, but was with them in 1860, and with her widowed mother in 1870. I can't explain her absence in 1850, except that she might have been residing with other relatives, or just been missed for some unknown reason.

I have no record of Rachel after 1870.

Laurania Stewart was born ca 1843/44 in Buncombe Co, NC (or Haywood). She was home with her parents for the 1850 and 1860 census, and with her widowed mother in 1870 (listed, in order, as "Laurania", "Lurena" and "Lorena", so different spelling, same name for 30 years). Willa Cooper told me that she also was known as "Laura".

I didn't find Laurania (or alternate spellings) on the 1880 or 1900 census.

Jane L. Stewart was born ca 1839/40 (per the 1860 census) or February 1843 per the 1900 census. She was probably born in Buncombe Co, NC (or Haywood).

Jane was not listed with the Dillard Stewart family in 1850, but she was with them in 1860, as "Jane" age 20 (c1839/40).

Jane was missing again in 1870, but back by 1880. I had speculated that Lucinda Stewart who was there in 1850 and 1870 but not in 1860 or 1880 was the same person, since she was there whenever Jane was not, and visa versa. However, I'm told by several that Lucinda and Jane were not the same person. I don't know where Jane Stewart was in 1850 or 1870.

In any event, Jane was listed on the 1880 census in Buncombe Co, NC. living in the same household as her sister Lou Stewart, who is listed here as younger than her, though other records show Lou to be older. Both were listed as Single, but with children.

Jane was on the 1900 census in Buncombe Co, NC in Asheville Township, Beaverdam district.  Jane was residing with her married daughter Rachel Stewart Palmer. Her son William was also there. This census record showed her as a Widow (it was very common for single mothers to claim being a widow, it helped them avoid obvious complications). The record also showed that she had 4 children, all of whom were still alive.

I haven't yet sought her out on the 1910 and 1920 census records.

The 1880 and 1900 census records (and family tradition) show that Jane Stewart was the mother of 4 children (all 4 proven by 1880 census):

John Stewart was born ca 1858/59 (or May 1860 per 1900 census). In 1860 he was with his mother and grandparents in Buncombe Co, NC, no relationship stated, age 1. In 1870 he was with his mother and widowed grandmother, no relationship stated, age 12. In 1880 he was with his mother Jane, and listed as age 21, and listed as her "son". The 1880 census proves their relationship. He married Lilly Laws later in 1880.

Rachel M. Stewart was born February 1865. She was with her grandmother and mother in 1870, no relationship listed, age 6. In 1880 she was with her mother Jane, listed as her "daughter" and age 16. She married William Palmer on 19 Jun 1887. For the 1900 census her mother Jane was residing with them, and relationship was listed as "Mother in Law" (to William Palmer). The 1880 and 1900 census prove Rachel to be Jane's child.

William E. Stewart was born February 1870. He did not appear on the 1870 census, but he was with his mother Jane for the 1880 census, age 10, and listed as her "son". In 1900 he was with her still, residing with his married sister Rachel Stewart Palmer. His relationship (to William Palmer) was listed as "Brother in law". The 1880 and 1900 census prove William to be Jane's child.

Sarah "Sallie" Stewart was born ca 1875/76. She was with her mother Jane on the 1880 census, age 4, listed as Jane's "daughter". I did not find her in 1900, but according to Jane's stats on the 1900 census, she had 4 children, all of whom were still living, so Sarah must have been married to someone by then. I don't know who.

The above 4 children are proven by the 1880 census, and two of them additionally by the 1900 census.

Willa Cooper has shared data with me on this family, including information that the death certificate of John Stewart lists his father as "John  Stewart" and his mother as "Jane Millard".  The Dillard Stewart family was closely tied to the David Miller family of Haywood Co, NC, as David's wife Cassandra Wallace was a sister of Dillard's wife Sarah Wallace. David Miller and his wife Cassandra did have a daughter named I. Jane Miller born ca 1838/39. (A near perfect match in age to this Jane, at least per her age on the 1860 census entry). Willa (nor I) am sure if Jane Miller, daughter of David, is the same person as Jane Stewart, though it is a distinct possibility. The only problem, of course, is then, who was her husband? Dillard had no male children, prior to his son John born in 1847.

My personal belief is that Jane Stewart was a child of Dillard and Sarah, and that her children were born out of wedlock, and I think the 1880 census helps to prove this (she was listed as "single"), as well as the fact that she had children born 1859, 1865, 1870, and 1876, and there was no sign of a husband.

John Dillard Stewart was born 1 May 1847 in Buncombe Co, NC.  He was home with is parents for the 1850 and 1860 census.

Thanks to Betty Stewart Boyd for data shared on this family.

On 30 Sep 1865, John Steward obtained a marriage bond in Buncombe Co, NC to marry A. E. Tow (Ann Elizabeth Lindsey, widow of Madison Tow).

John and Ann were listed on the 1870 census in Buncombe Co, NC in Leicester Township.

Ann Lindsey Stewart died sometime prior to 1899, for on 28 May 1899 John Stewart, age 50, married Mary F. Hill (Mollie Hill age 18).

John and Mary were listed on the 1900 census in Buncombe Co, NC in Leicester Township. Several of his children, now married, were listed nearby.

I haven't yet searched for John in 1910 and 1920 census. I'm told this family later moved to Danville, VA, where John died on 21 Aug 1931, and Mary on 22 Jan 1963. Danville is an Independent City, and not part of a county, though it is fully surrounded by Pittsylvania Co, VA on the north, east and west, and by Caswell Co, NC on the south.

Noah Welborn Stewart (a.k.a. William) was born 2 Oct 1849 in Buncombe Co, NC. He was home with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census, and with his widowed mother in 1870. Some records list him as "William", and he was remembered by some descendants as "Uncle Bill", so perhaps "Welborn" is wrong, though two census records show it that way. He may have had a third name. He was "Noah Welborn Stuart" in 1850, "Wilburn Stewart" in 1860 and "Noah Steward" in 1870).

On 2 Oct 1879 William Stewart age 26 married Mary Ramsey age 18 in Buncombe Co, NC.

They were listed on the 1880 census in Buncombe, next door to his sister Laurania "Lou" Stewart in Asheville Township. He was listed as "William" here, and his age was way too young, but I'm sure it is the same person.

I did not find Noah (or "Welborn" or "William") Stewart on the 1900 census in Buncombe Co, NC. There was a listing for a William and wife Mary in Fairview Township, but the ages were way off, and I don't believe it is them.
