Edward Stuart and Lucretia Anders of Buncombe Co, NC and Greenville Dist, SC and Gilmer Co, GA

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) do not know how (or if) I'm related to Edward Stuart.

Edward Stuart (also spelled "Stewart" on some records) was born ca 1796/97 in South Carolina, presumably in Spartanburg District.

There were several men named Edward Stuart in the old records, all possibly related to one another, so it is possible that I've mixed some of them up. However, for the most part, I think I have them properly sorted out.

A few years ago I found a file at the North Carolina Archives on this Stewart family, and it was prepared by D. C. Stewart of Etowah, TN in 1992 and contained his work, as well as work by professional genealogists William D. Bennett and Brent Holcomb (both well respected). Over the course of their research it was determined that this Edward (c1797) was the son of Edward Stewart and Mary Ford of Spartanburg and Greenville Dist, SC. Since then, I've had data shared with me by James A. Stewart and Teresa Stuart de Rios showing this proven from several sources. So to them I give thanks for data shared on this family. My own research on this particular family has been limited to census records, and Buncombe County, NC records.

The main source is a letter written in 1901 by Nellie Smith which outlines the family for several generations. She shows that Edward (1797) was a son of Edward and Mary Ford Stewart. No proof is offered, but presumably it was family knowledge. Census records confirm that Edward (Sr) had a son Edward's (1797) age. I don't know of any direct proof of this connection, but their might be some in Greenville Dist, SC records.

Edward (1797) was born in Spartanburg Dist, SC, but his parents moved to nearby Greenville Dist, SC by 1808 where he spent the next several decades.

Edward was apparently home with his parents for the 1800 census in Spartanburg District, age "under 10", (born ca 1790/1800).

Edward was apparently home with his parents for the 1810 census in Greenville Dist, SC, age 10-15 (born ca 1794/1800).

Edward was apparently home with his parents for the 1820 census in Greenville Dist, SC, age 16-25 (born ca 1794/1804).

Edward was probably home still in 1830, but I don't yet have the enumerations for Edward (Sr) to confirm it. Edward (Sr) was listed in the index for the 1830 census in Greenville Dist, SC. I'll get these records sooner or later. If Edward (1797) was still at home, he should be in the age 30-39 category (born ca 1790/1800). Though at his age, (still unmarried) he could have been residing with another family as a laborer or something.

The 1840 census index shows two listings for Edwards in Greenville Dist, SC, one is "Stuart", the other "Stewart". One is probably Sr, the other Jr (1797). I don't have the listings yet in order to confirm this though.

For one reason or another, Edward (1797) moved to Buncombe Co, NC in the early or mid 1840's. There had been other Stewarts / Stuarts in Buncombe County already, but most of them had moved or died off by the time Edward got there.

Edward Stuart married Lucretia --- sometime before 1847, presumably in Buncombe Co, NC. The D. C. Stewart papers show her maiden name as Anders, but I don't know the evidence for that is. Lucretia was born ca 1825/26 in NC. The 1840 census shows three "Andrews" families there, which might be the same surname as "Anders". Only one of them, Jack Andrews, had an apparent daughter Lucretia's age. This makes him prime suspect for her father. He seemed to live in that part of Buncombe County that later became Madison County (in 1851).

Edward and Lucretia were listed on the 1850 census in Buncombe County, NC. They were listed next door to John Andrews, 62 and wife Sarah, 45. This is probably the same person as "Jack" from 1840 (Jack is a nickname for John). Edward was listed with $200 worth of real property, so he had apparently acquired some land in Buncombe County before 1850. They were most definitely in the part of Buncombe that was soon cut off to form Madison County, or right on the borderline.

Edward and family left Buncombe County in the 1850's and moved to Gilmer Co, GA (per D. C. Stewart). I have not followed up on the family in Georgia. D. C.'s records show Edward dying 13 Mar 1873 in Pickens Co, GA. I don't have a death date for Lucretia.

Children

Edward Stuart and Lucretia had three children by the time of the 1850 census. I assume they probably had more born after 1850. I have no additional data on them though.
