James Stewart of Greenville Dist, SC and Buncombe Co, NC

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) do not know how (or if) I'm related to James Stewart.

James Stewart (also spelled "Stuart" on some records) was born ca 1780/84 per 1810, 1820 and 1830 census (age 26-44 in 1810, born ca 1765/84, and age 26-44 in 1820, born ca 1775/94, and age 40-49 in 1830, born ca 1780/90). If he is a son of Nathaniel Stewart, as I suspect, then he was probably born in Surry Co, NC.

I have no direct proof, but I suspect that James was a son of Nathaniel and Mary Stewart of Buncombe Co, NC. James did live in Buncombe Co, NC, apparently in the same area as Nathaniel, and Nathaniel did have an unknown son the right age to be James. This is highly circumstantial, but I feel reasonably good about it, even though strong evidence is lacking.

James was apparently home with his parents for the 1786 census (age "under 21", born ca 1765/86), and in 1787 (age "under 21", born ca 1766/87).

James was apparently home with Nathaniel for the 1790 census also, age "under 16", born ca 1774/90.

Around 1795, Nathaniel and family moved to Greenville Dist, SC. Presumably, James went with them.

James did not appear to be home with his father for the 1800 census, but a James Stewart was listed one page fro Nathaniel in 1800 Greenville Dist, SC. I suspect that this was him, as his household enumerations are in line with James' later entries in Buncombe County. He was listed as James "Jr", probably to distinguish himself from the older James Stewart also listed there (who was listed as "Sr" in 1800). This "Sr" and "Jr" does not imply they were father and son (though they could be), for in those days, it was only used as a way to properly distinguish two men of the same name, so they would not be mixed up in the public records. It was not part of their name. I don't know for sure if this listing for James is the same James who later appeared in Buncombe County, NC, but I think that it is. There is only one flaw in my theory, and that is this James (of 1800 Greenville) seems a little too old to be the same James, though his other family members are of perfect age by comparison.

1800 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

1800 Greenville Dist, SC pg 247 James Stewart Jr 10010-10100
Analysis:
1 Male(s) 26-44 (1755-1774)	James STEWART (1780/84) s/o Nathaniel
1 Male(s) 0-9 (1790-1800)	Son? (1794/1800)
1 Female(s) 16-25 (1774-1784)	Wife? (1774/84)
1 Female(s) 0-9 (1790-1800)	Daughter? (1794/1800)

Nathaniel moved his family to Buncombe Co, NC in the 1800-1810 timeframe. James Stewart appeared in Buncombe at the same time (hence my main rationale for thinking James is his son).

James Stewart married someone (name not known) before 1800, either in Surry Co, NC (if he is Nathaniel's son), or in Greenville Dist, SC. I have not yet found any records with her name on it.

James Stewart was listed on the 1810 census in Buncombe Co, NC. He was just a few houses from his probable brother Joshua Stewart. James was listed between Elisha Davis and Walter Clayton.  Other neighbors were names I recognize as residents of that part of Buncombe that later became Henderson County.  I don't know what part of present Henderson County this was, though it might be on or near McDowell Creek, where some of Nathaniel's other children lived. Some of the neighbors look like those that lived in the part of Henderson that later became Transylvania County. It may not be significant, but James' surname was spelled "Stewart", while his possible brother Joshua was spelled "Steward", just a few houses away. Spelling variations are usually not significant, but when they were this close together, and it was the same census taker taking the info down, it makes me wonder.

1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

1810 Buncombe Co, NC pg 270/86 James Stewart 11010-01010
Analysis:
1 Male(s) 26-44 (1765-1784)	James STEWART (1780/84) s/o Nathaniel
1 Male(s) 10-15       (1794-1800)	Son? (1794/1800) --> gone by 1820
1 Male(s) 0-9 (1800-1810)	Son? (1804/10)
1 Female(s) 26-44 (1765-1784)	Wife? (1780/84)
1 Female(s) 10-15     (1794-1800)	Daughter? (1794/1800) --> gone 1820

James was still in Buncombe County for the 1820 census. He was not listed near any other Stewarts this time. Many of his neighbors are names that I recognize that lived in the part of Buncombe County that later became Yancey County, and eventually became Madison County. James' neighbors on either side were John Holcomb and Cyrus H. Freeman.

1820 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

1820 Buncombe Co, NC pg 98 James Steward 110010-20010
Analysis:
1 Male(s) 26-44 (1775-1794)	James STUART (1780/84) s/o Nathaniel
1 Male(s) 10-15 (1804-1810)	Son? (1804/10)
1 Male(s) 0-9 (1810-1820)	Son? (1815/20)
1 Female(s) 26-44 (1775-1794)	Wife? (1780/94)
2 Female(s) 0-9 (1810-1820)	Daughter? (1815/20)
					Daughter? (1815/20)

James was still in Buncombe for the 1830 census. Judging by his neighbors, he was clearly in or near the Ivy community of present Madison County (this is a Buncombe County border region as well). He was not near any other Stewarts. His next door neighbors were James Cody and James Hurst.

1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

1830 Buncombe County, NC pg 299 Ja. Stuart 2110101000000-1120001000000

1 Male(s) 10-14 (1815-1820)	Son? (1815/20)
1 Male(s) 5-9 (1820-1825)	Son? (1820/25)
2 Male(s) 0-4 (1825-1830)	Son? (1825/30)
					Son? (1825/30)

1 Female(s) 0-4 (1825-1830)	Daughter? (1825/30)

James Stewart was not found in 1840. He was not in Buncombe County, nor in Yancey County (formed in 1833 from the part of Buncombe where James had lived). I don't know if he died in the 1830's, or else moved away somewhere. I suspect he moved away. I have no idea where.

Children

James Stewart and wife had numerous children per the 1800 through 1830 census records. I have no data on any of them so far. I suspect they all moved wherever he did after he left Buncombe County.
