Ann Turner (c1820) of Marion and Dillon Co, SC[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to the Ann Turner family, but I am very interested in her though. Ann Turner was either born a Turner, or married one just before 1843 when her first child was born. Her second child (and last, apparently) was born ca 1846, so her husband must have died between then and the 1850 census. I don't know for sure if she were a widow, or a single mother. In any event, she was born ca 1819/20 in Marion District, SC. Ann (or her husband) is very likely connected with the John and Patience (---) Turner family, as they lived in that same region. By the time of the 1850 census, Ann was either widowed, or a single mother, with two children at home with her. Based on an analysis of her various neighbors, I'd say she was within the area of modern Kirby Township (now Dillon County), probably somewhere on the west or south side of Catfish Creek.

The Lydia Turner family had an Ann Turner close to the right age residing with her, and they were in the same general area as Ann Turner of 1850 had been, though not precisely. It is certainly possible that Ann of 1860, living with Lydia then, is the same Ann from 1850, but they don't match perfectly. Also, Ann of 1850 had sons Robert and Joel. Ann of 1860 did not, though she had several children. I didn't find them in the 1870 census either, though I'm fairly sure I located Joel Turner in Wahee township that year. ChildrenAs far as I know, Ann Turner only had two children, both proven by the 1850 census. Robert Turner born ca 1842/43 in Marion District, SC, presumably in what is now Kirby Township (now Dillon County). He was found on the 1850 census with his mother, but not found again afterwards. Joel Turner was born ca 1845/46 in Marion District, SC, presumably in what is now Kirby Township (now Dillon County). He was found on the 1850 census with his mother, but not located in 1860. For the Civil War, Joel Turner enlisted in Company I, First Regiment Infantry (Hagood's). Sellers reported he was still living at the time of his book (c1898-1902) (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, 1902 page 599). There was another Joel Turner of age in Marion at the time, and there was also another Civil War record, so I'm not entirely sure which Joel is which. The other was in Company D, 25th Regiment Infantry (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, 1902 page 635). For the 1870 census, a Joel Turner close to the right age to be the Joel above was found in Wahee Township of Marion County, he was residing with the widow Polly Moore family (widow of Robert Moore).
