Daniel Joyner Turner and Laura Virginia James of Marion Co, SC[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) am a Great Great Grandson of Daniel J. Turner and Laura Virginia James. Daniel Joyner Turner was born 8 Nov 1846 (per tombstone, and death certificate) in Marion District, SC, presumably in the Catfish community. He was a son of Daniel Turner and Martha Collins as proven by the 1850 and 1860 records and by Daniel J. Turner's death certificate. This was also common family knowledge as passed to me by my Aunt Dot (Dorothy Turner Campbell 1927-1994). Daniel J. Turner was listed on every record I've found (so far) only as "Daniel Turner", but the death certificate of his son Thomas Lide Turner gave his father's name as "Joyner Daniel Turner". Since this is far removed from the fact, it could be incorrect, however, I'll continue to use "Joyner" as a middle name, if only to help distinguish Daniel from his father Daniel. Daniel Turner was with his parents for the 1850 census.

Turner was probably too young for Civil War service, and I found no record of him serving. Daniel J. Turner married Laura Virginia James ca 1868 in Marion Co, SC, probably in the area east of Mullins. She was born 12 May 1840 (per her tombstone). She was a daughter of Pinkney J. James and his wife Sophie J. ---. Daniel Turner and family were listed on the 1870 census in Reaves Township, next door to his widowed mother Martha.

Rogers (a neighbor in 1870). (Marion Co, SC Deed Book II page 147). Daniel and family were listed on the 1880 census. They were still in Reaves Township, apparently in the same place as before. Daniel's mother Martha was two houses away.

Rogers, R.L. Rogers, Mary A. Hays, Martha A. O'Brien, W.A. Hays, B.H. Rogers and Rebecca L. Rogers. The deed refered to land formerly of John Smith. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book II page 157). Daniel Turner and family were listed on the 1900 census, still in Reaves Township.

Laura Virginia James Turner died on 22 Nov 1914, Daniel Turner on 5 Nov 1915. Both are buried at the McMillan Cemetery just east of Mullins, SC. ChildrenDaniel Turner and Virginia James had nine children, all proven by the census, and all remembered by my Aunt Dot (Dorothy Turner Campbell 1927-1994) when she gave me my start on the Turner family history. Annie Iola Turner was born 21 Apr 1869 in Marion Co, SC, presumably just east of Mullins, in Reaves Township. She was home with her parents for the 1870 and 1880 census. Sometime prior to 1898 she married a Mr. Floyd. I don't know who he was. She had one child in February 1898 (John Rembert Floyd), and died a few months later on 2 Oct 1898. She is buried at the McMillan Cemetery. Her marker has "Annie Iola Floyd Apr 21 1869 - Oct 2 1898". I have no idea who her husband was. Her son was raised by his grandparents (Daniel and Virginia), at least until their deaths. Aunt Dot didn't remember John Rembert Floyd, so he may have died as a young man, or else moved away (or just didn't associate with the Thomas Lide Turner branch of the family). Rudolph Alonzo Turner was born 6 Oct 1871 in Marion Co, SC, presumably just east of Mullins, in Reaves Township. He was home with his parents for the 1880, 1900 and 1910 census. He married Mary Florence Watson on 20 Jan 1915. She was a daughter of William H. Watson and Mary Catherine Davis. They were listed on the 1920 census in Marion County.

Sarah Alice Turner was born 21 Jan 1872 in Marion Co, SC, presumably just east of Mullins, in Reaves Township. She was home with her parents for the 1880 and 1900 census. Sometime prior to 1910 she married William Boyd Collins son of Joshua W. Collins (who was a son of Joseph Collins). Alice died 3 Jan 1956 and William died 2 Sep 1965. Both are buried at the McMillan Cemetery: "William Boyd Collins Feb 24 1874 - Sep 2 1965" and "Alice Turner Collins Jan 21 1872 - Jan 3 1956". He was home with his parents for the 1880 census. He died 27 Oct 1893. His brother Daniel died just three weeks earlier. He is buried at the McMillan Cemetery: "Charlie W. Turner Jun 25 1874 - Oct 27 1893". Daniel Cornelius Turner was born 3 Apr 1875, presumably just east of Mullins, in Reaves Township. He was home with his parents for the 1880 census. He died 3 Oct 1893. His brother Charlie died just three weeks later. He is buried at the McMillan Cemetery: "Daniel C. Turner Apr 3 1875 - Oct 3 1893". The stone is badly worn and is getting hard to read. Lillie Turner was born March 1877 presumably just east of Mullins, in Reaves Township. She was home with her parents for the 1880 and 1900 census. She married Madison R. Perritt prior to 1910. I have a notation that she died in 1940 and is buried at the Watson Cemetery. I have no additional data on this branch of the family yet. Lula Nora Turner was born 1 Jan 1879, presumably just east of Mullins, in Reaves Township She was home with her parents for the 1880 and 1900 census. She married Jack Sawyer prior to 1910. They are both buried at the McMillan Cemetery, and have a double stone: "Lula Nora Sawyer Jan 1 1879 - Dec 3 1942 .. Jack Sawyer May 21 1886 - Sept 15 1945". I have no additional information on this branch of the family yet. Della M. Turner was born 11 Sep 1881, presumably just east of Mullins, in Reaves Township. She was home with her parents for the 1900 census. She married Zack Sawyer prior to 1910. They are both buried at the McMillan Cemetery. His birth date is given as 31 April 1874: "Zack A. Sawyer Apr 31 1874 - Feb 18 1942" and "Della Turner, wife of Z.A. Sawyer Sep 11 1881 - Mar 30 1938". I have no additional data on this branch of the family yet. Thomas Lide Turner was born 5 Jun 1883, presumably just east of Mullins, in Reaves Township. He was home with his parents for the 1900 census, and he was listed as head of household on the 1910 census, with them residing with him. He married Zadie Idell Watson on 10 Sep 1914. She was a daughter of William H. Watson and Mary Catherine Davis. Thomas and Zadie are my Great Grandparents. They both died before I was born, but my mother knew them both, though Thomas died while she was still young. He died 1 Mar 1953. Zadie died 3 Nov 1963. They are buried at the McMillan Cemetery with a double stone: "Zadie Idell Turner Sept 10, 1896 - Nov 3, 1963 . Thomas Lide Turner Jun 5 1883 - Mar 1 1953".
