Daniel Turner (c1796) and Martha Collins of Marion Co, SC

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) am a 3rd Great Grandson of Daniel Turner and Martha Collins.

Daniel Turner was born ca 1795/96 somewhere in SC. I suspect it was in the area between Latta and Sellers near Catfish Creek in modern Dillon Co, SC, but then part of Georgetown District. In 1798 Marion District was created and covered that area. It remained so until 1868 when Marion "District" became Marion "County". In 1910 Dillon County was created from the northern part of Marion, and took this area with it.

I don't know who Daniel Turner's parents were. I've found no primary documents giving me even a strong clue as to who they might be. Using the 1800, 1810 and 1820 census records, I find several possible suspects.

In the 1800 census, there were a few Turner households that had someone his age living with them, including Amos Turner (who's estate records do not include Daniel); John Turner Sr; John Turner Jr; and Reuben Turner. These last two were sons of John Turner Sr. There were other Turners in nearby counties as well, so there is no way to be sure Daniel was born in Marion District, or living there by 1800.

In the 1810 census, there were several Turner households that contained someone about Daniel's age, including: Amos Turner again; and Reuben Turner;

The 1820 census shows only one household with someone Daniel's age: Reuben Turner. However, this isn't conclusive that this is where Daniel was, as he would have been about 24, and could be living with another family as a hired laborer.

Daniel Turner first appears on the public records on the 1824 Tax List of Marion dist, SC. He was charged with 3 cents tax.

That same year, on 6 Nov 1824 Daniel Turner purchased 50 acres from Christopher Dew, land on the North east side of Caliph Swamp. Witnesses were Archibald Kerby and Nathan Hulon. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book O page 42).

On 17 Dec 1830 The same land was deeded to him again, or else another tract of the similar description. Christopher Dew, executor for "C. Dew, deceased" sold the land for $31. (The previous deed was for $175). Witnesses this time were Arch. Kerby (again) and Mills Hays. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book O page 42).

Daniel Turner was listed on the 1830 census in Marion County, SC. He had an older woman with him and 2 children. If this was his wife Martha Collins, then her age was way off. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so we can't determine where Daniel was living, nor who his neighbors were.

1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

1830 Marion District, SC pg 48 Daniel Turner 0000010000000-2000001000000
Analysis:
1 Male(s) 30-39        (1790-1800)	Daniel TURNER (1795/96) s/o ?
1 Female(s) 40-49      (1780-1790)	Wife? Mother? (1780/90) --> gone by 1840
2 Female(s) 0-4        (1825-1830)	Daughter? (1825/30)
					Daughter? (1825/30) --> gone by 1840

This could indicate that Daniel Turner was married prior to Martha Collins, or else the enumerations were just messed up.

In any event, Daniel Turner married Martha Collins sometime prior to 1835. She was born in 1811, so does not fit well at all with the ca 1780/90 entry in Daniel Turner's 1830 household. Though she would certainly have been old enough to have married before 1830. I'll have to read that census again to be sure I didn't make a mistake. I may have gotten this from the published version and not the original. It was too many years ago for me to remember now.

Daniel Turner was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC. This census was not alphabetical, so we can more or less determine where Daniel lived. His neighbors on either side were N. Christmas and Elisha Bethea (who was known to live on Catfish Creek. Other neighbors included several of my relatives, such as John Turner Jr, Martha Turner, Henry Turner, Joseph Turner, Crawford Lane, James Lane Sr and James Lane Jr. This seems to be the area along Catfish Creek in an area that could either by Bethea Township or Moody Township.

I don't know how neighbors John Turner Jr, Martha, Henry and Joseph Turner are related to my Daniel, but they probably are. Of these, John Jr is old enough to be Daniel's father.

Daniel Turner and family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion Dist, SC. He was listed next door to Martin M. Turner (the younger) who was young enough to be Daniel's son, but I don't think he was his son. He could be a younger brother, or perhaps a nephew or cousin. Daniel's neighbors in 1850 were not the same ones as in 1840, so he may have moved a little during that time frame. Based on a little census analysis, this seems to be in Kirby Township near Berry's Crossroads and Bass Mill on Catfish, or between Latta and Sellers.

Daniel Turner was listed on the 1860 census in Marion District, SC. It is difficult to determine where he was living at that time. He was 18 households from Stephen Turner, a possible relative who was known to live in Legette Township (in the Centenary area). Daniel's neighbor on one side was Archibald Gasque, who in 1870 was in Legette Township. His neighbor on the other side was "Elizabeth Caves" age 70, who had several Collins children with her. She was also in Legette Township in 1880. Assuming neither she nor Gasque moved in that time frame, then that would suggest that Daniel Turner also lived in Legette Township area in 1860.

Daniel Turner died during the 1860's. The 1870 census included his widow Martha living in Reaves Township, apparently having moved after Daniel died (or before he died, no way to tell). At this point, I'm sure they lived in that area just East of Mullins, where the family remained down to the present day. Martha's neighbor on the 1870 census was her son Daniel Turner.

Martha Collins Turner died on 25 Feb 1892 (per her tombstone), and she is buried at the McMillan Cemetery, east of Mullins. There is an unmarked grave right next to her that could be her husband Daniel Turner.

Children

Daniel Turner and Martha Collins had several children, some unknown, but others proven by the 1850 through 1880 census records. It is possible that Daniel was married before marrying Martha. I'm basing this on Daniel's 1830 census entry, which included a woman born ca 1780/90 but no female Martha's age.

Winnie Turner was born 28 Sep 1835 (per Faye Hart) in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in or near the Catfish community. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census. She was gone by 1860, so probably had married by then. According to Faye Hart, Winnie's first husband was John Collins. I didn't find them on the 1860 census, nor have I located a good candidate to be this John Collins. He was undoubtedly a cousin of hers. John apparently died before 1870, for Winnie was listed on that census, an apparent widow. See Jonah Collins family for more on this John, or who I think this John Collins is.

I think it is possible that at least some of her children were born out of wedlock. She had a son named "Frank Collins" age 6 months on the 1870 census with her, but later records show this person as "Frank Capps", and a son of Winnie's 2nd husband Francis Capps. She married Francis Capps before ca 1872. They were listed on the 1880 census in Marion Co, SC with her Collins children listed in the same house, but with a different family number. The youngest "Collins", Frank was a Capps on this census. It is probable he was born prior to their marriage, but was a son of Francis Capps. According to Faye Hart's records (as found in the LDS records), Winnie died 10 Nov 1911, and Francis Capps on 10 Aug 1920, both in Marion County. Most of the dates I have on this family come from the records of Faye Capps Hart. Several members of this family married into my Lane family, so I'm doubly related to them.

James Turner was born ca 1835/36 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in or near the Catfish community. He was home with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census.

James Turner may have served for the Civil War. There were a few records that may be him, but since there were several James Turner's in Marion at this time, it is hard to tell. One "J. Turner" served in Company E, 23rd Regiment (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, 1902 page 613).

A "James Turner" served in Gregg's Battery, Co. D, Manigault's Battalion Artillery (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, 1902 page 619).

A "J. Turner" served in Company D. 10th Regiment Infantry, and reportedly "died at hospital" (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, 1902 page 628).

Of the above, I suspect ours was the one in Company D, 10th Regiment Infantry who died during the war. I think this mainly because our James is not found again (after the 1860 census). He wasn't found on the 1870 census, nor the 1880 census, at least not in Marion County.

Mary Turner was born ca 1837/38 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in the Catfish community. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census, but gone by 1860, so probably had married (or died) by then.

Unknown Daughter born ca 1835/40 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in the Catfish community. She was home with her parents for the 1840 census, but gone by 1850, so probably had married (or died) by then.

Elizabeth Turner was born ca 1841/42 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in the Catfish community. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census, but gone by 1860, so probably had married (or died) by then.

Martha Jane Turner was born ca 1843/44 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in the Catfish community. She was home with her parents for the 1850 and 1860 census, but gone by 1870, so probably had married (or died) by then.

Daniel Joyner Turner was born 8 Nov 1846 (per his tombstone) in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in the Catfish community. He was home with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census. He is my ancestor. He married Laura Virginia James ca 1868 in Marion Co, SC. See his own page for more information on him.

Stephen Turner was born ca 1852/53 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in the Catfish community. He was home with her parents for the 1860 and 1870 census. He married Prudence --- before 1880. They were listed on the 1880 census in Marion Co, SC in Wahee Township.

Prudence died sometime between 1910 and 1915, presumably in Marion County.

Stephen Turner married again on 12 Feb 1915 in Marion Co, SC. He married Mollie Tart who was his housekeeper back in 1910.

I don't know (yet) if Stephen had any children by either wife. It seems from the 1900 and 1910 census entry that his wife Prudence had no children.

I did not find Stephen and Mollie listed on the 1920 census. I don't know if I missed them, or they had moved away or both had died by then.

Sarah "Sallie" Turner was born ca 1854/55 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in the Catfish community. She was home with her parents for the 1860 census ("Sallie" age 5) and in 1870 ("Sally" age 12). She never married, but had at least three children out of wedlock.

In 1880, Sally was with her mother in Marion County, and had two children by this time.
