Henry Turner (c1810) of Marion Co, SC and Guilford Co, NC[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to Henry Turner, but I am very interested in him though. Note: Sam West submitted the 1850 census record for this family showing them in Guilford Co, NC. This was published in the Pee Dee Queue, November-December 2004. Thanks Sam! I never would have located this family in 1850 otherwise. Fortunately their entry includes the county of birth as well as the state, thus proving it is the same Henry Turner. Henry Turner was born ca 1810 based on two census records. In 1830 he was age 15-19 (born ca 1810/15), and in 1840 he was age 30-39, born ca 1800/10). Assuming neither of these are in error, they can be reconciled to a birth year of circa 1810. The 1850 census shows him as 39, so that shows ca 1810/11. He was born in Marion District, SC (proven by 1850 census), and probably born in the area around Catfish Creek in either Moody Township or Kirby Township (now Dillon County, SC). I don't know for sure which area, but I'm just assuming it was somewhere in that vicinity. I don't know who Henry Turner's parents might have been, but he seems closely associated with the other Turner families of the Catfish Creek area, so possibly a descendant of John Turner and Patience ---. Here are my primary suspects for his parents, based only on early census records and them being known Catfish Creek residents: John Turner (c1760/65) had sons Henry's age; Reuben Turner (c1760/65) had sons Henry's age; Martha Turner (c1780/90) had sons Henry's age; Reuben Turner (c1784/85) had sons Henry's age; and finally, William Turner (c1767/68) also had a son Henry's age (but his children are documented, no Henry among them.) Of the above, all were residents of Catfish Creek (except the younger Reuben Turner), so each is an equal suspect (with the younger Reuben as a last choice), and in each case, their son (or sons) Henry's age had gone from their household by 1830, when Henry was listed as a head of household. So obviously, additional information will be needed to narrow this list down a bit. Henry Turner married Margaret --- sometime before ca 1829. She was born ca 1806/07 in Robeson Co, NC (proven by 1850 census.) They were listed on the 1830 census. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so we can't determine exactly where Henry was living, nor who his neighbors were. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Marion District, SC pg 48 Henry Turner 1001000000000-1000100000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 15-19 (1810-1815) Henry TURNER (1810/11) 1 Male(s) 0-4 (1825-1830) Son? This census was not alphabetical, so we can more or less determine where Henry lived. His neighbors on either side were Margaret Blackman and Crawford Lean (Lane) Other neighbors nearby included several Turner families, such as John Turner Jr, Martha Turner, Daniel Turner, Joseph Turner. This seems to be the area along Catfish Creek in an area that could either by Bethea Township or Moody Township. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Marion District, SC pg 140 Henry Turner 3000010000000-0310010000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 30-39 (1800-1810) Henry TURNER (c1810/11) 3 Male(s) 0-4 (1835-1840) John C. That census listed the birth county of each person, so it proves that this is the same family as most members were born in Marion, SC. The youngest child (Daniel, age 5) was born in Montgomery Co, NC, showing that Henry and family moved there between 1840 and 1845 before moving on to Guilford County. I have no additional data on this family at this time. ChildrenHenry Turner and his wife had several children based on the 1830 through 1850 census, some unidentified.
