James Turner (c1818) and Judith Powers of Marion Co, SC and Robeson Co, NC

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to the James Turner family, but I am very interested in him though.

Special thanks to Joyce Braswell and Melanie Kelley for data shared with me on this family.

James Turner was born ca 1817/18 (per the 1850 census) or ca 1819/20 (per 1860 and 1870 census ). He was born in Marion District, SC. I'm not sure which section of the county he was born in, but Kirby Township area seems most likely, somewhere on the south or west side of Catfish Creek. This would be somewhere in the general vicinity of Sellers, or between there and Latta.

I haven't been able to determine who James Turner's parents were, but I have a few suspects, but no strong evidence linking him to anyone, though it seems quite likely he is a descendant of John Turner and Patience --- of Catfish.

Melanie Kelley stated that James and Judith Turner were members of Catfish Creek Baptist Church.

James Turner and family were listed as "White" on the 1850 and 1860 census, however, Melanie Kelley, a descendant, tells me there is a strong tradition of "Indian Blood" in this family, so that may, in fact, tie them in with the rest of the Turner families of Catfish.

Census takers used the "Free Colored" and "Mulatto" designation to show a person of mixed race, whether they be part Indian, part Black, or of some other origin (darker skinned). A large portion of the Turners of Marion County fell into this category. One of the earliest Turner's in the area was John Turner Sr (c1740-c1804) and his wife Patience. They were listed in this mixed race category, and there are several public records relating to them showing John was half African, and that Patience was one fourth or thereabouts. These same early (and later) Turners alternated between "Free Colored" and "White" on the various early census records and between "Mulatto" and "White" on the later ones. Of special note is that William Turner (c1768), a proven son of old John Turner, was always listed as "White", though he had the same origin as his brothers John Turner Jr and Reuben Turner who both were often listed in the "mixed" category. The fact that James was listed as White, the majority of the time, may tie him in with William Turner (who did have a son his age, apparently).

James would have been about 2 years old by the time of the 1820 census, so he should be enumerated in the "under 10" age group (born 1810/20). There were several Marion District Turner households with unknown sons this age, including John Turner (1760/70), Martha Turner (1784/90), and Reuben Turner (c1785). Of these, I'd exclude Reuben as he didn't live in the Catfish Creek area.

James would have been about 12 years old by the time of the 1830 census, so he should be enumerated in the 10-14 age group (born 1815/20). There were several Marion District Turner households with apparent sons this age, including Reuben Turner (1760/65), Robert Turner (c1794), and William Turner (c1768). Of these, Reuben and William's apparent sons that age are already accounted for, so that only leaves Robert as a suspect per this census.

James would have been about 22 years old by the time of the 1840 census, so he should be enumerated in the 20-29 age group (born 1810/20). Martha Turner (1784/90) had an apparent son this age (already accounted for though), and her was the only Turner household containing an apparent son that age.

James Turner married Judith Powers (maiden name per Melanie Kelley, as it was given on death certificate of their son George W. Turner) ca 1840-1843 in Marion Dist, SC. I don't know who Judith's parents were, but in the 1850 census, they were only three houses from Allen Powers, the same age as Judith, so a possible brother, I suppose.

James Turner and family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion District, SC. They weren't too far from my ancestor Daniel Turner (about 14 households) and from Martin M. Turner also. They were living somewhere in Kirby Township, I believe.

They seemed to be in the same general area for the 1860 census, though at this time, no other Turners were listed anywhere nearby, except for a 19 year old Lindsay Turner listed 17 houses away.

Some of the names and ages in the 1860 census disagree with those in 1850, suggesting that one of the two records is in error.

I don't know what role the James Turner family took during the Civil War. The family may have already moved to Robeson Co, NC by that time. Melanie Kelley informed me that they moved there before 1870.

I checked and found James and family on the 1870 census in Robeson Co, NC in Thompsons Township. They were about 15 households from Robert Turner (c1825), probably closely related, and about the same distance from Catherine (Turner) Parker, daughter of William Turner (1768).

Apparently James died between 1870 and 1879, for on 5 Oct 1879 Judith married Elijah Bass. (Thanks to both Melanie and Joyce for this data). Elijah Bass was listed on the 1880 census in Robeson Co, NC in Thompson Township aged 70 years old. His wife "Judith" was age 50 and "John C. Turner" was with them age 11.

Children

James and Judith Turner had about 12 children. I say "about" because some of these listed below as separate children may be one instead, or some listed as one might be two (read each one and you'll see what I mean). Thanks to Melanie Kelley and Joyce Braswell for filling in information on the descendants of these children.

Mary Ann Turner (c1844)

James Hampton Turner (c1845)

Susan Martha Turner (c1847)

Phillip Turner (c1848)

Rebecca A. Turner (c1850)

Anderson J. Turner (c1853)

Benjamin Turner (c1854)

George Washington Turner (1856)

Virginia Turner (c1857)

Easter Turner (c1859)

Sarah Frances Turner (c1860)

John C. Turner (c1868)

Mary Ann Turner was born ca 1843/44 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby Township (now Dillon County). She was home with her parents for the 1850 and 1860 census.

She married James L. Lee in Robeson Co, NC on 11 Jan 1866. Thanks to Joyce Braswell for additional data on this family (as listed below in the register report).

James Hampton Turner was born ca 1844/45 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby Township (now Dillon County). He was not listed on the 1850 census, but a "Sarah" was listed, about his age, who was not listed in 1860 (see Sarah's entry below). "Joseph" was listed with the family in 1860. According to Joyce Braswell and Melanie Kelley, this person was actually "James Hampton Turner". I don't know why he was listed wrong both on 1850 and 1860 census. In any event, he married Eunice Parker on 2 Feb 1877 in Robeson Co, NC. Thanks to Joyce Braswell for additional data on this family (as listed below in the register report).

Susan Martha Turner was born ca 1846/47 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby Township (now Dillon County). She was listed in the 1850 census with her parents as "Susan" age 3, and in 1860 there was a "Martha" age 12 (who wasn't listed in 1850). I think they are one and the same, but could be wrong about that as "Martha Susan" or "Susan Martha" is not a common name combination. Martha married Malcolm Wilkerson on 20 Oct 1869 in Robeson Co, NC. Thanks to Joyce Braswell for additional data on this family (as listed below in the register report).

Phillip J. Turner was born ca 1847/48 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby Township (now Dillon County). He was home with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census.

He married Sarah M. Lane on 28 Dec 1867 in Robeson Co, NC. I don't know if she is connected to my Marion County Lanes or not.

Apparently Sarah died before 1870, for Phillip was listed on the 1870 census in Marion Co, SC with Enos Tart, and neither had wife or children.

Thanks to Joyce Braswell for additional data on this family (as listed below in the register report). Joyce also reports that Phillip married (2) Mary Eliza Davis and (3) Helen W. Wilkinson, no marriage dates for those yet.

Rebecca A. Turner was born ca 1849/50 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby Township (now Dillon County). She was not listed in 1850, so perhaps born in late 1850. She was with the family for the 1860 and 1870 census. She married Richard R. Moody on 8 Nov 1870 in Robeson Co, NC. Thanks to Joyce Braswell for additional data on this family (as listed below in the register report).

Anderson J. Turner was born ca 1852/53 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby Township (now Dillon County). He was home with his parents for the 1860 and 1870 census. He married Angaline Wilkerson on 13 Nov 1873 in Robeson Co, NC. Thanks to Joyce Braswell for additional data on this family (as listed below in the register report).

Benjamin Turner was born ca 1853/54 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby Township (now Dillon County). He was home with his parents for the 1860 census, but not with them in 1870. I don't know if he died before then, or was living elsewhere.

George Washington Turner was born 19 Jan 1856 (per Melanie Kelley) in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby Township (now Dillon County). He was home with his parents for the 1860 and 1870 census. George married first to Sarah M. --- who died ca 1880 (per both Melanie Kelley and Joyce Braswell). He married (2) to Sallie Edwards on 18 Feb 1886 in Robeson Co, NC. Thanks to Joyce Braswell and Melanie Kelley for additional data on this family (as listed below in the register report).

Virginia Turner was born ca 1856/57 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby Township (now Dillon County). She was home with his parents for the 1860 and 1870 census. She married William Howell on 28 Dec 1878 in Robeson Co, NC. Thanks to Joyce Braswell for additional data on this family (as listed below in the register report).

Easter Turner was born ca 1858/59 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby Township (now Dillon County). She was home with his parents for the 1860 and 1870 census. She married Alexander W. Wilkerson on 29 Dec 1875 in Robeson Co, NC. Thanks to Joyce Braswell for additional data on this family (as listed below in the register report).

Sarah Frances Turner was born ca 1861/62 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby Township (now Dillon County). She was with her parents for the 1870 census. She married Harlie Cox on 6 Aug 1879 in Robeson Co, NC. Thanks to Joyce Braswell for additional data on this family (as listed below in the register report).

John C. Turner was born ca 1867/68 in Marion County, SC or Robeson Co, NC. He was with his parents for the 1870 census, and with his mother and her new husband for the 1880 census. He married Mary Carter ca 1891 in Robeson Co, NC. Thanks to Joyce Braswell for additional data on this family (as listed below in the register report).
