James Turner (c1828) and Desda --- of Marion and Dillon Co, SC

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to the James Turner family, but I am very interested in him though.

James Turner was born ca 1827/28 in Marion District, SC, but I don't know what section. In 1850 he was in the area north of Catfish Creek in Bethea Township (now Dillon County).

I don't know who James' parents might be. There are several candidates based on 1840 and 1830 census records, Turner households that have a male this age, who is otherwise unidentified. This includes: Joseph Turner, Martha Turner, Elias Turner, John Turner, Henry Turner, Jesse Turner and Reuben Turner. I don't know which of these are the better candidate.

James Turner married Desda --- before ca 1849 in Marion Dist, SC. They were listed on the 1850 census, apparently in what later became Bethea Township, possibly in the Berry Crossroads area. Their neighbors in 1850 included Samuel J. Bethea and Slaughter Berry families, who back in 1840 were also neighbors to each other, but with no Turner families listed nearby. In 1850, James and family were not especially close to any other Turner families.

I didn't find this family on the 1860 census. There was a James Turner age 30 in the 1860 census, living with Zilpha Shelly, age 60. It is possible this is the same James, if his wife Desda and little daughter Elizabeth died before then. I found Zilpha Shelly in the 1850 census in Marion, and she had no Turner's residing with her then, nor any near by. This same James Turner (from the 1860 census) married Tilatha --- and was listed in Legette Township for the 1870 census, not far from Zilpha Shelly, and that James was next door to Stephen Turner in 1870.

For now, I'm going to take a conservative view and say that James (and wife Desda) of 1850 Marion is not the same person as James in 1860 and later. I'm going to leave James of 1850 as a different person. He may have moved away after 1850 and before 1860. Refer to that James Turner page for more on the other James. If I can find evidence that they are one and the same person, I'll "rejoin" them.
