Jesse Turner (1800/10) of Marion Co, SC

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to Jesse Turner, but I am very interested in him though.

Jesse Turner was born ca 1800/10. The only record I have for him is the 1830 census. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so we can't determine exactly where Jesse was living, nor who his neighbors were. This means I have no evidence to determine if he was anywhere near the Catfish Creek Turners (and therefore probably a descendant of John and Patience Turner), or if he was in the neighborhood of the Effingham Turners.

For the 1810 census, Jesse would have been "under 10" (born ca 1800/10). There were several Turners in Marion District that year with apparent sons his age, including Amos Turner (bef 1755), Reuben Turner (1760/65), and William Turner (1768). This does not mean that these are the only suspects to be his parents, but they certainly are the only candidates from this census. There is always the possibility that Jesse wasn't originally from Marion, but moved there later on.

For the 1820 census, Jesse would have been either in the age 10-15 group (born ca 1804/10) or in the 16-25 group (born ca 1794/1804), depending on his actual date of birth.  John Turner (1760/70) had apparent sons in both age groups, Martha Turner (1784/90) had one son 10-15, Reuben Turner (1760/65) had sons in both age groups, William Turner (1768) had one son 10-15.

Jesse Turner married someone (name unknown) before 1830, presumably in Marion District, South Carolina.

They were listed on the 1830 census in Marion District. This census was alphabetical, so I can't determine who his neighbors were, or if he lived near any other Turners.

1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

1830 Marion District, SC pg 48 Jesse Turner 1000100000000-1001000000000
Analysis:
1 Male(s) 20-29 (1800-1810)	Jesse TURNER
1 Male(s) 0-4 (1825-1830)	Son?
1 Female(s) 15-19 (1810-1815)	Wife?
1 Female(s) 0-4 (1825-1830)	Daughter?

Jesse Turner did not appear on the 1840 census, at least not in Marion or in neighboring counties. So based on this, he either died, or moved his family out of the area.

The 1840 census index shows 31 entries for "Jesse Turner" around the country. I did not check them all for likely matches.

The 1850 census index shows 53 entries for "Jesse Turner" around the country. I did not check them all for likely matches, though we could certainly eliminate many from consideration (such as those in New England and Ohio, Indiana, Illinois). That still leaves many potential suspects. I checked those in Alabama, Missouri and Mississippi and found no matches.

Children

Jesse Turner and his wife had at least two children based on the 1830 census, all currently unidentified.
