Joel H. Turner (c1825) and Permelia --- of Marion and Dillon Co, SC[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to the Joel Turner family, but I am very interested in him though. Joel H. Turner was born ca 1824/25 in Marion District, SC presumably near Catfish Creek in what is now Dillon County, SC somewhere near Latta. I think that Joel is probably a son of Robert and Rebecca Turner, as in 1850 he was next door to him, and Robert did have an apparent son his age, who his otherwise unaccounted for. In 1860 he was still next door to Robert. Joel H. Turner married Permelia (or Amelia) --- sometime before 1848. I don't have any clues as to her maiden name. Joel Turner and family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion District, SC. He was listed next to Robert Turner on one side and Rachel Turner on the other. Other neighbors were known residents of Kirby Township, so they were somewhere on the west or south side of Catfish Creek.

Census takers used the "Mulatto" designation to show a person of mixed race, whether they be part Indian, part Black, or of some other origin (darker skinned). A large portion of the Turners of Marion County fell into this category. One of the earliest Turner's in the area was John Turner Sr (c1740-c1804) and his wife Patience. John and Patience were the grandparents of Robert Turner, whom I believe to be Joel's father. John and Patience were listed in this mixed race category, and there are several public records relating to them. The 1790 and 1800 census list them in the "Free Colored" columns, and some court records and one deed record show them to be of black origin (however, some of these records were based on statements by people trying to hurt the family in that era of racism, so were certainly very biased). Based only on these records, it can not be determined whether the family was of part Indian origin, part Black origin, or a combination of the two, or of some other origin. See the John Turner page for a more indepth study of this subject. In 1860 Joel Turner was listed next door to Robert Turner, whom I believe was his father. The younger Robert Turner was two houses away, and Willis Turner was also two houses away, in the other direction.

One was in Company I, First Regiment Infantry (Hagood's) (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, page 599). This one was still "living" at the time of Sellers book (c1901). The other record for a Joel Turner was in Company D, 25th Regiment Infantry (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, page 635). Both were Privates, and I don't know for sure which is which, but the one in Company D seems more likely to be this one since Martin Turner and Willis Turner were also in this unit, and they were known neighbors of this Joel. I was unable to locate Joel Turner on the 1870 census, though it seems he should have been listed in Kirby Township. Joel Turner was listed on the 1880 census, in Kirby Township. He was listed next to Robert Turner (not his father).

They were not in Marion for the 1900 census. ChildrenJoel Turner and Permelia had at least five children, proven by the 1850, 1860 and 1880 census. Joseph Turner was born August 1848 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby Township (now Dillon County). He was home with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census. He was living with Lucy Lee, age 50 in the 1870 census, and Kenneth Turner (his cousin?), son of Martin M. Turner (the younger) was also living there. I don't know if Lucy Lee was related or not. The wife and children listed here are Kenneth's wife and children. I could be wrong about this being the same Joseph, as there were a few other Joseph's about this same age around at this time.

Two nephews were listed, both with a surname I couldn't make out to clearly, but it seemed to say "Allice". In 1880 he had an "Alen" family next door to him, but I don't know how they are related. Rebecca Turner was born ca 1849 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby Township (now Dillon County). She was home with her parents for the 1850 census, listed as "Rebecca" age 11 months. In 1860 there was an "S.A. Turner" with the family, age 11. I suppose it is the same person. None of the family was located in 1870, so I don't know if she was still home at that time. She was not with the family in 1880, so had probably married or died by then. A.E. Turner was born ca 1853/54 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby Township (now Dillon County). She was with her parents for the 1860 census. None of the family was located in 1870, so I don't know if she was still home at that time. She was not with the family in 1880, so had probably married or died by then. S.J. Turner was born ca 1856/57 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby Township (now Dillon County). She was home with her parents for the 1860 census. None of the family was located in 1870, so I don't know if she was still home at that time. She was not with the family in 1880, so had probably married or died by then. Angeline Turner was born ca 1860 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby Township (now Dillon County). She was home with her parents for the 1860 census. None of the family was located in 1870, so I don't know if she was still home at that time. She was still with the family for the 1880 census. There was a 1 year old Ida Turner with the family, listed as a granddaughter. I don't if this child was a child of Angeline's or of someone else in the family. In the 1900 census, in Kirby township is a listing for someone that might be this same person, but the name is hard to make out, it could say "Anila" or "Penila" or something like that. Her age is perfect to be Angeline, and she is listed as having four children, all four still living, but only three were at home (If Ida from 1880 is her daughter, then this fits well). Keep in mind that this may not be the same person at all.
