John Turner (1800/10) of Marion Co, SC

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to John Turner, but I am very interested in him though.

John Turner was born ca 1800/10, presumably in Marion District, SC, and probably in the area around Catfish Creek in either Moody Township or Kirby Township (now Dillon County, SC). I don't know for sure which area, but I'm just assuming it was somewhere in that vicinity.

I don't know who John Turner's parents might have been, but he seems closely associated with the other Turner families of the Catfish Creek area, making him a likely descendant of John and Patience Turner.

For the 1810 census, John would have been "under 10" (born ca 1800/10). There were several Turners in Marion District that year with apparent sons his age, including Amos Turner (bef 1755), Reuben Turner (1760/65), and William Turner (1768). This does not mean that these are the only suspects to be his parents, but they certainly are the only candidates from this census.

For the 1820 census, John would have been either in the age 10-15 group (born ca 1804/10) or in the 16-25 group (born ca 1794/1804), depending on his actual date of birth.  John Turner (1760/70) had apparent sons in both age groups, Martha Turner (1784/90) had one son 10-15, Reuben Turner (1760/65) had sons in both age groups, William Turner (1768) had one son 10-15.

This John Turner was not found on the 1830 census in Marion District, but if listed he should have been in the age 20-29 category (born ca 1800/10). Only Nathaniel Turner (1780/90) had someone that age with him in 1830. This could be John, or John may have been living elsewhere.

John Turner was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC. This census was not alphabetical, so we can more or less determine where John lived. He was listed as John Turner Jr. John Turner Sr in this case would be John Turner (c1760/65) but he wasn't listed nearby. John Turner (Jr)'s neighbors on either side were Martha Turner and Morning Powers. Other neighbors nearby included several Turner families, such as Henry Turner, Daniel Turner, Joseph Turner. This seems to be the area along Catfish Creek in an area that could either by Bethea Township or Moody Township.

1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

Analysis:
1 Male(s) 30-39 (1800-1810)	John TURNER (1800/04) s/o ?
1 Male(s) 15-19 (1820-1825)	Son?
1 Female(s) 30-39 (1800-1810)	Wife?
1 Female(s) 5-9 (1830-1835)	Daughter?
1 Female(s) 0-4 (1835-1840)	Daughter?

I did not find John Turner on the 1850 census in Marion District, SC, nor in any bordering counties. Nor did I find any widow that might have been his wife. I suspect this family moved away somewhere during the 1840's.

Billy Higgins pointed out a John Turner (c1805), who was in Marion Co, AR by 1850. According to Billy, this family was listed as "Mulatto" on some census records, so that makes a connection seem likely, since so many of the Catfish Creek Turner's also were listed that way on some records. One problem with this being the same John is that he was already in Marion Co, AR in 1840, while the John under study here was still in Marion Dist, SC in 1840. However, a connection still seems likely, though I doubt they are the same John Turner.

There are far too many John Turners to check on the 1850 census. But if anyone has a John Turner born in the 1800-10 time-frame in South Carolina, this may be him.

Children

John Turner and his wife had several children based on the 1840 census, all currently unidentified.
