Joseph Turner (c1803) and Elizabeth of Marion Co, SC[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) don't know how or if I'm related to the Joseph Turner family. I am very interested in him though. Joseph Turner was born ca 1802/03 in Marion Dist, SC, but I don't know what part of the county he came from. He was later in the Temperance Hill area (Moody Township) (by 1850 anyway). Although Joseph Turner and his family were listed as "White" in the 1830, 1840 and 1850 census, daughter Druzilla was listed as "Mulatto" on the 1860 census, and again as "White" in 1870 and 1880. This one "Mulatto" entry, may be a small clue that the Joseph Turner family is descended from the John Turner Sr family. Refer to his page for more information on him and on the "Mulatto" vs "White" subject. Also visit my Ethnic Origins page for some general information on this subject. For the 1810 census, Joseph would have been about 7 years old, so should be enumerated in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1800/10). There were several Turners in Marion District that year with apparent sons his age, including Amos Turner (bef 1755), Reuben Turner (1760/65), and William Turner (1768). This does not mean that these are the only suspects to be his parents, but they certainly are the only candidates from this census. For the 1820 census, Joseph would have been about 17 so he should be in the 16-25 age group (born ca 1794/1804). John Turner (1760/70) had apparent sons in this age group, Reuben Turner (1760/65) had sons in that age group. Joseph Turner married Elizabeth --- ca 1825/30 in Marion Dist, SC. I have no clues as to her maiden name. Joseph Turner was listed on the 1830 census in Marion Dist, SC. This census was alphabetical, so we can't determine where he lived, nor who his neighbors were. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Marion District, SC pg 48 Joseph Turner 1000100000000-0000200000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 20-29 (1800-1810) Joseph TURNER (1802/03) s/o ? 1 Male(s) 0-4 (1825-1830) Son? This census was not alphabetical, so we can determine, more or less, where Joseph lived. Joseph Turner was listed next door to James Lane Jr on one side, and Margaret Blackman on the other. Just a few houses away were several Turner's including: Henry Turner, Martha Turner, John Turner Jr, and Daniel Turner (my ancestor). As best as I can determine, this was within Moody Township, probably in the Temperance Hill area or west of there towards Catfish Creek. In either event, this is probably within the bounds of modern Dillon County in the area where the Town of Latta is now. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Marion District, SC pg 140 Joseph Turner 0010010000000-4200010000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 30-39 (1800-1810) Joseph TURNER (1802/03) s/o ? 1 Male(s) 10-14 (1825-1830) Son? (1835/40) --> gone by 1850 Joseph Turner and family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion District, SC. He was not listed near any other Turner families at all, and most of his neighbors from 1840 were still nearby, but not listed quite as close, so he probably moved during the 1840's or this is just a result of the order the census taker visited houses. Several of Joseph's close neighbors in 1850, were neighbors to the Stephen Turner family in 1860, though Joseph was not found that year.

Other than their daughter Zelia (Druzilla), none of this family was found on the 1860 census. Since all the known children were daughters, they could have all been married by 1860. However, I don't know who any of them married, other than Druscilla ("Zelia"). ChildrenJoseph Turner and Elizabeth had several children, most of them daughters. The 1830 and 1840 census indicate at least one son, but so far he is unidentified. The daughters are all proven by the 1850 census. Unknown Son born ca 1825/30 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Moody Township. He was with his parents for the 1830 and 1840 census, but not at home with them by 1850. I don't know who this is. He may have married before 1850, and I just don't know which one is him, or perhaps he died before 1850, or moved away. Catherine Turner was born ca 1831/32 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Moody Township. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census. I didn't find her in 1860, so she was probably married by then, or had died. Marinda Turner was born ca 1833/34 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Moody Township. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census. I didn't find her in 1860, so she was probably married by then, or had died. Clarissa Turner was born ca 1835/36 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Moody Township. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census. I didn't find her in 1860, so she was probably married by then, or had died. Jane Turner was born ca 1837/38 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Moody Township. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census. I didn't find her in 1860, so she was probably married by then, or had died. Mary Turner was born ca 1839/40 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Moody Township. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census. I didn't find her in 1860, so she was probably married by then, or had died. Druzilla Turner was born ca 1841/42 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Moody Township. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census. She married David S. Lane in 1860 in Marion Dist, SC. They were listed on the 1860 census in Marion Dist, SC. She had a 2 year old "A. Turner" (female) residing with her. This could be a niece, or possibly an illegitimate daughter. I found nothing else on "A. Turner". She was no longer with the family by 1870. David and Druzilla were listed on the 1870 census in Marion Co, SC in Moody Township. By 1880 they had moved to neighboring Bethea Township where they were listed on that census. I didn't find them in 1900 Bethea, but they may have been back in Moody Township, which I haven't checked yet. David S. Lane was a son of James C. Lane Jr and Susan Bryant. Refer to his page for more info on the Lane family. Joanna Turner was born ca 1843/44 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Moody Township. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census. I didn't find her in 1860, so she was probably married by then, or had died. Researcher ListPersons researching this family (click here for data on how to get on or off of this list):
