Lydia Turner (c1805) of Marion Co, SC[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to Lydia Turner, but I am very interested in her though. Lydia Turner was born ca 1804/05, presumably in Marion District, SC, and probably in the area around Catfish Creek in either Moody Township or Kirby Township (now Dillon County, SC). I don't know for sure which area, but I'm just assuming it was somewhere in that vicinity. I don't know if Lydia was a widow or a single mother. She could have been married to a Mr. Turner who died before 1860. I don't have any idea who this "Mr. Turner" might have been though. Henry Turner (listed here in 1840) could be Mr. Turner. He had a wife the right age to be Lydia, and since Lydia named one of her children "Henry" that makes for two clues. Henry was not found in 1850. Another similar possibility is that she was the 2nd wife of John Turner Jr (c1760/65), as his 2nd wife was also her age, and per the 1830 and 1840 census, they had a daughter born 1820/25, which fits perfectly with Lydia's apparent daughter Ann (c1823/24). (Henry had no daughter that age with him). I did not find Lydia listed on the 1850 census, but she was listed as head of household in 1860. She had an apparent daughter named Ann, age 36 and several young children under age 12. I don't know if these younger ones were Lydia's or Ann's. Since it could go either way, pending further proof, I'm listing Ann as Lydia's daughter, and the rest as children of Ann. For the 1860 census she was not in close proximity to any other Turner families. Based on an analysis of their neighbors, it seems clear she was in what later became Kirby Township, and somewhere near Catfish Creek, which certainly suggests she is somehow connected to the John and Patience Turner family.

Census takers used the "Free Colored" and "Mulatto" designation to show a person of mixed race, whether they be part Indian, part Black, or of some other origin (darker skinned). See the page for John Turner Sr (c1740-c1804) and his wife Patience for more on this subject. I didn't find Lydia Turner, nor Ann Turner (nor any of the children) listed on the 1870 census. ChildrenLydia Turner apparently had several children based on the 1860 census, or perhaps only one child (Ann) and several grandchildren. Since I have no additional data on any of these children, I'll not list them here. View the Register Report for their names and other info.
