Rachel Turner (c1824) of Marion and Dillon Co, SC[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to the Rachel Turner family, but I am very interested in her though. Rachel Turner was born ca 1823/24 in Marion District, SC, presumably near Catfish Creek in what is now Dillon County, SC somewhere near Latta. I don't know who her parents were, nor if she was a single mother (born a Turner), or a widow (married a Turner). However, the evidence does seem to point to her being a single mother. She had several children by the 1850 census. In 1860 she had even more, and since there was no man living with her, it would seem she was unmarried, or possibly, had an absentee husband, though that seems unlikely. I think that Rachel is probably a daughter of Robert and Rebecca Turner, as in 1850 she was just two households from him, and he did have several daughters her age, who are otherwise unaccounted for. In 1860 she wasn't as close, but still not too far from him. Rachel Turner and two children were listed on the 1850 census in Marion District, SC. She was listed next to Joel Turner, (her brother?) who was next to Robert Turner. Other neighbors were known residents of Kirby Township, so they were somewhere on the west or south side of Catfish Creek.

However, by the 1860 census, she had even more children, so that makes "single mother" seem more likely. This was fairly common in those days from what I've seen. For the 1860 census, Rachel Turner and her children were residing with John Bass. They were all listed with race code of "M". Census takers used the "Mulatto" designation to show a person of mixed race, whether they be part Indian, part Black, or of some other origin (darker skinned). A large portion of the Turners of Marion County fell into this category. One of the earliest Turner's in the area was John Turner Sr (c1740-c1804) and his wife Patience. John and Patience were the grandparents of Robert Turner, whom I believe to be Rachel's father. John and Patience were listed in this mixed race category, and there are several public records relating to them. See their page for more information on this subject. Rachel was listed with John Bass on the 1860 census. I don't know if John Bass was a relative, or a "companion" of Rachel's. They were still somewhere in the Catfish Creek area.

I did find her son John (I think) on the 1870 census in Moody Township. In 1880 he was in Marion Township. Mary Turner, daughter of Rachel appeared in 1880 Marion Township as well, and by 1900 was in Legette. ChildrenRachel Turner apparently had five children, all born out of wedlock. They were listed with her in the 1850 and 1860 census. She may have had others born after 1860 who aren't accounted for. John C. Turner was born 28 Nov 1845 (per tombstone) in Marion District, SC, presumably in the area later contained in Kirby Township (now Dillon County). He was home with his mother for the 1850 and 1860 census. John married Martha A. --- sometime prior to 1867 in Marion District, SC. They were listed on the 1870 census in Moody Township, next door to Solomon Turner, whose relationship is unknown.

Turner yet on the 1900 census. His first wife died sometime prior to 1903, for around 1902-1903 he married Mary J. ---, presumably in Marion County. They were listed on the 1910 census in Legette Township.

John died 28 May 1912 and is buried at the Centenary Methodist Church Cemetery in Marion Co, SC (Legette Township). Elizabeth Turner was born ca 1848/49 in Marion District, SC, presumably in the area later contained in Kirby Township (now Dillon County). She was home with her mother for the 1850 census, but gone by 1860, so probably had died by then. Mary Turner was born September 1851 in Marion District, SC, presumably in the area later contained in Kirby Township (now Dillon County). She was home with her mother for the 1860 census. I didn't find her in the 1870 census, but in 1880 I found her in Marion Township, single, but with one child (at least I'm fairly sure this is the same Mary Turner). Her child was named "Rachel", probably after her mother. No other Turner's were close by, but her brother John was in the same Township.

The nearest Turner family was Orpy Ann, widow of Willis Turner, who was only 15 households away. The 1900 census lists Mary's marital status as "S" (Single), but was written over with "W" (Widow) (it was common for a single mother to declare herself a "widow"). She was also recorded as having 3 children, but only one still living. I don't know who the other 2 children might have been, but they may have died young.

Lydia Turner was born ca 1852/53 in Marion District, SC, presumably in the area later contained in Kirby Township (now Dillon County). She was home with her mother for the 1860 census. I haven't found her in later census records. T. J. Turner was born ca 1858/59 in Marion District, SC, presumably in the area later contained in Kirby Township (now Dillon County). She was home with her mother for the 1860 census. I haven't found her in later census records.
