Rhoda Turner (c1825) of Marion and Dillon Co, SC

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to the Rhoda Turner family, but I am very interested in her though.

Rhoda Turner was either born a Turner, or married one just before 1850 who died before the 1850 census. I don't know which is the case. In any event, she was born ca 1824/25 in Marion District, SC.

By the time of the 1850 census, Rhoda was either widowed, or a single mother, with a small child at home with her. Based on an analysis of her various neighbors, I'd say she was within the area of modern Kirby Township, probably somewhere on the west or south side of Catfish Creek so probably connected to the John and Patience Turner family.

For the 1850 census, her neighbors on either side were the Robert Kilpatrick family on one side, and Nathan Kerby, age 80 on the other. Also very close by were William M. George family, Mary Clark family, James Haselden family and the John M. Godbold family. None of these were very near each other back in 1840 except Haselden and Godbold who were just a few houses apart then. None had a Turner family anywhere close by.

TURNER JOHN 4/12 M W MARION 1849/1850

Moving to the 1860 census, neither Rhoda nor her son John Turner were found in Marion District, SC. Some of their former neighbors were found in close proximity to one another, including Haselden, Clark and Godbold. Interestingly, near these was a Lydia Turner family, who was not listed on the 1850 census. Since there were numerous errors on the 1850 census, it is possible that Lydia and Rhoda are one and the same, but I'm not willing to commit to that theory just yet.

On the 1860 census, I did find a Thomas Norton family with a wife Rody age 35 (perfect!) and a son John age 12 (close!), and other children. This Thomas Norton was not listed on the 1850 nor 1870 census, so I have nothing else to go on to see if he could have married Rhoda Turner, or if this was someone else entirely. Just a theory for now.

Children

As far as I know, Rhoda only had one child: John Turner (proven by 1850 census).
