Robert Turner (c1825) and Olive --- and Mary --- of Marion Co, SC and Robeson Co, NC

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to the Robert Turner family, but I am very interested in him though.

Robert Turner was born ca 1824/25 in Marion District, SC, presumably in the area east of Catfish Creek in Moody Township. Robert is most likely a son of William Turner since he was residing just three houses from him in 1850. William had a son that age per the early census records. Another possibility is that Robert is a son of the older Robert Turner, as he was next door to him in the 1860 census. Robert accompanied one of William's daughters (Catherine Turner Parker) into neighboring Robeson Co, NC in the 1860's, so that adds credibility to the theory that Robert is also a son of William Turner.

Robert Turner was probably home with his parents for the 1830 and 1840 census. Both Robert (Sr) and William Turner had a son this age with them in 1830 (though neither had one that age in 1840). By then Robert was about 15, so might have been living with another family as a hired hand. It is possible that neither Robert Sr nor William is the father of Robert.

Robert Turner married Olive --- before 1845. I don't know what her maiden name was.

Robert Turner and family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion District, SC. He was listed three houses from his possible father William Turner. Robert was next door to his possible brother Martin M. Turner.

For the 1860 census, Robert and family were still in Marion District. His probable brother Martin M. Turner was just five houses away, and Robert Turner (Sr) was next door to the younger Robert. Other Turner's were fairly close by as well.

For the 1860 census, Robert Turner and family were all listed with a race code of "M" (Mulatto). Census takers used the "Free Colored" and "Mulatto" designation to show a person of mixed race, whether they be part Indian, part Black, or of some other origin (darker skinned). A large portion of the Turners of Marion County fell into this category. One of the earliest Turner's in the area was John Turner Sr (c1740-c1804) and his wife Patience. John and Patience were the parents of William Turner, possible father of Robert Turner. John and Patience were listed in this mixed race category, and there are several public records relating to them. See their page for details.

For the Civil War, one of the Robert Turner's enlisted in Company C, 26th Regiment Infantry as a Private. He was listed by Sellers as "Robert Turner", and he said he was captured at Five Forks in 1865. (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, page 639).

I have no way of knowing if the above record is for this Robert Turner, or for one of the others. There were at least three Robert Turner's of proper age to be Civil War soldiers in Marion at that time. The other Turner's in the same company were from the Effingham area Turner's, and I think that Robert Turner was one of them (a son of Benjamin W. Turner) and not the Robert Turner under study here.

I didn't find Robert and Olive Turner in the 1870 census in Marion. Norma Frisch, a descendant, informs me that they moved from Marion County to Robeson Co, NC, but returned to the Dillon and Marion Co, SC area after ca 1900.

I checked the 1870 census for Robeson Co, NC and did find Robert there. He was next to is probable sister Catherine Turner Parker. This census shows that Olive had died in the 1860's, and Robert had remarried, to Mary ---. I don't know Mary's maiden name, nor if they married in Marion County, SC or Robeson Co, NC.

They were still in Robeson for the 1880 census, and in Britts Township. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Children

Robert Turner and Olive had at least nine children, as proven by the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census. He had several more with second wife Mary.
