Robert Turner (c1832) and Sarah A. --- of Marion and Dillon Co, SC[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to the Robert Turner family, but I am very interested in him though. Robert Turner was born ca 1831/32 (per 1860 and 1870 census) or February 1825 per the 1900 census, presumably in Marion District, SC, and probably in the area east of Catfish Creek in Kirby Township. I don't know who Robert's parents are. Robert could be a son of Martha Turner, but I have no real proof of that. Robert Turner was probably home with his parents for the 1840 census. The Turner families listed in 1840 who had an unidentified son about his age include: Martha Turner, Elias Turner, Hugh Turner and John Turner. Of these, I'd say that Martha and John are the most likely candidates, as they lived in the Catfish Creek area, whereas Elias and Hugh lived near Effingham. I did not find Robert Turner listed on the 1850 census, at least not in Marion District, SC. Robert Turner married Sarah A. --- before 1853, presumably in Marion District, SC. For the 1860 census, Robert Turner and family were in Marion District. No other Turners were listed nearby. They were surrounded by members of the Coleman family, perhaps they were related in some way. Based on an analysis of their neighbors in 1860, Robert Turner was (at that time) residing in Legette Township.

He was listed by Sellers as "Robert Turner", and he said he was captured at Five Forks in 1865. (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, page 639). I have no way of knowing if the above record is for this Robert Turner, or for one of the others. There were at least three Robert Turner's of proper age to be Civil War soldiers in Marion at that time. The other Turner's in the same company were from the Effingham area Turner's, and I think that Robert Turner was one of them (a son of Benjamin W. Turner) and not the Robert Turner under study here. Robert Turner and wife moved to Kirby Township prior to 1870, for they were found in that township on the 1870 census. Several other Turner families lived there, but they weren't listed close by.

They were in an area not known for Turner families, and only one other Turner family was there for the 1900 census, an Isam Turner that I haven't yet identified. I had trouble reading much of this entry from the 1900 census.

ChildrenRobert Turner and Sarah had at least six children (5 of whom were still living as of 1900). Arthur Turner was born November 1853 (per 1900 census), presumably in Marion District, SC, possibly in Legette Township, or perhaps elsewhere. Arthur was home with his parents for the 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1900 census. The 1900 census entry seems to show his marital status as "M" (Married), though no wife was listed with him (this entry was very hard to read, see above). He was with his parents in 1900, so perhaps he had married before 1900, and his wife died before then. James Turner was born October 1857 (per 1900 census), presumably in Marion District, SC, possibly in Legette Township, or perhaps elsewhere. James was home with his parents for the 1860 and 1870 census. James married Mary J --- before 1874 in Marion County, SC. For the 1880 census, they were listed in Wahee Township, with James' brother Evander Turner residing with them.

James was home with his parents for the 1860 and 1870 census. In 1880 he was living with his brother James Turner in Wahee Township (see above). His name was given as "Robert" in 1860, but as "Evander" in 1870 and 1880. I didn't find him in 1900 (under either "Robert" nor "Evander"), at least not in Marion County. Jane Turner was born ca 1861/62, in Marion District, SC, possibly in Legette Township, or perhaps elsewhere. Jane was home with her parents for the 1870 census, but gone by 1880, so probably had married (or died) by then. Daniel Turner was born ca 1863/64, in Marion District, SC, possibly in Legette Township, or perhaps elsewhere. Daniel was home with his parents for the 1870 and 1880 census. I didn't find him on the 1900 census (at least not in Marion County), though there was a Daniel W. Turner listed in Brittons Neck Township, but his birth month and year was not given, and his age seems to say "80" or "30". This could be the same person, but I don't know for sure yet. Matthew Turner was born ca 1874/75, in Marion County, SC, presumably in Kirby Township (now Dillon County). Matthew was home with his parents for the 1880 census. I didn't find him on the 1900 census (at least not in Marion County). There was a Morgan Turner about this same age listed very near Matthew's brother James on the 1900 census in Marion Township. This could be the same person. Researcher ListPersons researching this family (click here for data on how to get on or off of this list):
