Robert Turner (c1794) and Rebecca --- and Mary --- of Marion and Dillon Co, SC

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to the Robert Turner family, but I am very interested in him though.

Robert Turner was born ca 1793/94 in SC. He was probably born near Catfish Creek in what is now Dillon County, SC, but was then part of Georgetown District until 1798 when Marion District was formed. Robert Turner is a proven son of Reuben and Dorothy Turner.

On 30 Oct 1804 Reuben Turner and Dorothy Turner gave their "son Robert Turner" a deed of gift of a horse and several other items. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book F page 231).

Robert was only about 10 years old at the time of the above deed.

Like his parents, Robert Turner was variously listed as "White", "Free Colored" and "Mulatto" on the census records. Census takers used the "Free Colored" and "Mulatto" designation to show a person of mixed race, whether they be part Indian, part Black, or of some other origin (darker skinned). A large portion of the Turners of Marion County fell into this category. One of the earliest Turner's in the area was John Turner Sr (c1740-c1804) and his wife Patience. John and Patience were the grandparents of Robert Turner. They were listed in this mixed race category, and there are several public records relating to them. See their page for details.

Robert Turner seemed to be home with his parents for the 1800, and 1810 census.

Robert Turner married Rebecca --- before 1830.  I have no clues as to her maiden name. They may have been married prior to 1820, as the 1830 census seemed to show several children born before 1820. However, I didn't find them listed on the 1820 census (perhaps they resided with some other family, with her parents perhaps).

Robert Turner was listed on the 1830 census in Marion District, SC. This census was alphabetical, so we can't determine where they lived in the county, nor who their neighbors were, but I suppose they were somewhere along Catfish Creek, probably in the area later called Kirby Township (near Latta, SC). This census entry showed several children apparently born prior to 1820, but I didn't see Robert Turner listed on the 1820 census. He may have been married prior to 1820, but not listed as a head of household (or else I missed him, or the census taker missed him).

On 23 Jan 1837, Robert Turner was named in the Estate records for John McCall, Merchant, as having notes due to the estate. This does not imply a relationship, just that Robert owned money to John McCall. (Marion Co, SC Inventory Book 1827-1836 pg 230 as published in the Pee Dee Queue)

Robert Turner was listed on the 1840 census in Marion District, SC. This census was not alphabetical, so we can roughly determine where he lived. He was listed near several other Turner families, including: Theophilus Turner, Martin Turner, Daniel Turner, John Turner Jr, Martha Turner, Henry Turner, and Joseph Turner, all on the same page or the previous page. These are all known to lived on or near Catfish Creek in Kirby Township (now Dillon County) and Moody Township. Robert Turner's neighbors on either side included James H. Bryant and John Turbeville and one more on each side were J.M. Bryant and Wikuner (Wickham) Watson. This probably puts him in the area near Ebenezer Church. These are not the same neighbors he had in 1850, so he apparently moved around a little bit (he didn't own property as far as I know).

Robert Turner and family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion District, SC. He was listed next to Joel Turner, who was next to Rachel Turner. Other neighbors were known residents of Kirby Township, so they were somewhere on the west or south side of Catfish Creek.

Apparently Rebecca Turner died during the 1850's, for in 1860 Robert had a new wife named Mary (assuming she was his wife, and not an older daughter).

They seemed to be in the same general area for the 1860 census. Just as in 1850, Joel Turner was listed next door on one side, while on the other side was the Robert and Olive Turner family. Willis Turner was just three houses away, and Martin M. Turner was not far distant either.

Robert Turner was too old for Civil War service, but he apparently died during that timeframe, or sometime between 1860 and 1870. I didn't find him, nor his wife Mary on the 1870 census, so presumably he died. Mary may have died also, or perhaps remarried before 1870.

Children

Robert Turner and Rebecca had numerous children, according to the 1830 through 1850 census records. Unfortunately, most of them are currently unidentified. Only two children were still home with them by the 1850 census, and no other sources have been located to prove any additional children.

Unknown Son was born ca 1815/20 in Marion District, SC, presumably in what became Kirby Township (now Dillon County). The Robert Turner family was not found on the 1820 census, but this child was listed with the family for the 1830 census, but was gone by 1840, so perhaps married or died before then. There are several Turner men who were about this age, whose parents are unaccounted for, including: James Turner (c1817/18), Martin M. Turner Jr (c1819/20) and Martin M. Turner Sr (c1815/16). Of these, I'd put Martin M. Turner Jr (c1819/20) at the top of the list, as he was close to Robert in 1860. However, I really don't have sufficient evidence to choose any one of these over the other.

Unknown Daughter was born ca 1815/20 in Marion District, SC, presumably in what became Kirby Township (now Dillon County). The Robert Turner family was not found on the 1820 census, but this child was listed with the family for the 1830 census, but was gone by 1840, so perhaps married or died before then.

This could be Rachel Turner born ca 1823/24 who was two houses from Robert in 1850 and not too far from him in 1860.

Jesse Turner was born ca 1833/34 in Marion District, SC, presumably in what became Kirby Township (now Dillon County). A boy his age was listed with the Robert Turner family for the 1840 census. He was with his parents for the 1850 census. I did not find him in the 1860 or 1870 census, but someone about his age appeared on the 1880 census in Jeffries Township (now Florence County). I don't know for sure if that is this same Jesse or not. Two strong clues are in the names of his several children. He had one daughter named "Rebecca" (perhaps after his mother) and another named "Druscilla" perhaps after his younger sister. These two names make me believe this is the same Jesse, but like I said, I can't be sure. I don't know where he might have been residing in 1860 and 1870.

I have no data on them after this.

Druscilla Turner was born ca 1834/35 in Marion District, SC, presumably in what became Kirby Township (now Dillon County). A girl this age was listed with the Robert Turner family for the 1840 census. She was with her parents for the 1850 census. I did not find her in 1860 or later census records, so perhaps she had married or died before then.
