Stephen Turner (c1810) and Mary Ann Cooper of Marion Co, SC

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to the Stephen Turner family, but I am very interested in him though. It is quite possible that he is a younger brother of my ancestor Daniel Turner, therefore making him an uncle, but this connection isn't proven. They do seem to be related though.

Special thanks to Treasa Bortree, Mavis Jackson, Tonya Perry, and Donald W. Turner for information shared on Stephen Turner and some of his descendants.

Stephen Turner was born ca 1809/10 presumably in Marion District, SC. I don't know what section of the county he was born in, but it seems likely it was in the Catfish Creek area, either in Moody or Kirby Township. Donald W. Turner gives Stephen's birth date as 24 Jan 1813. Family tradition in his branch of the family says the family came to Marion from the Charleston area.  His birth date may be correct, but it doesn't match any of his census records. In 1860 he was 50 (born ca 1809/10), in 1870 age 64 (born ca 1805/06), in 1880 age 64 (born ca 1815/16).

I don't know who Stephen Turner's parents are, but I have several suspects. It is very likely that he is a descendant of John and Patience Turner. Several Turner families had a son his age per the early census records, who is otherwise unidentified and could be Stephen:  Amos Turner (unlikely, his estate records name his heirs, no Stephen among them); Reuben Turner (c1760/65) (a good possibility); William Turner (c1768) (a good possibility). The above three were listed on the 1810 census and had a son under 10 years old (born ca 1800/1810), so that makes them candidates. The 1820 census gives a few more possibilities. The John Turner household had two boys about Stephen's age, though John was too young to be Stephen's father (could be an older brother though); Martha Turner (c1780/90) had a boy his age with her. Of the above, I'd vote for William or Reuben as the most likely, with Martha as a 3rd choice. Of course additional evidence will be needed to prove or disprove any of these.

Donald W. Turner told me of his family tradition about the origin of this family:

"Dad says that he was always told that Stephen & our line of Turners came from the Charleston area, after Stephen arrived with a boatload of Irish immigrants. Stephen supposedly was a "woolen draper" and was teaching the immigrants this trade (or some other). "

I think that, like all family traditions, there is some truth to the above statement, but it probably doesn't apply to Stephen himself, but perhaps to his parents, since all census records show that Stephen was born in SC. Family tradition quite often mixes up the generations, but should never be discarded, even if evidence seems to contradict it. I'll bet that someday we find out the above is true, but I don't think about Stephen himself. If we could identify his parents, then perhaps we could verify some of the family tradition.

Stephen Turner was probably home with his parents for the 1810, 1820 census. By 1830, no Turner households had an "extra" male with them around Stephen's age. He would have been about 20 years old then, and probably was working as a laborer with some other family.

Stephen Turner married Mary Ann Cooper sometime before 1835. Her maiden was shared with me by several of Stephen's descendants. I don't know what the  proof of it is, nor who her parents were.

Stephen Turner was listed on the 1840 census in Marion District, SC. He was not listed near any other Turner families. His neighbors on either side were: Nathan Evans and W. G. Smith (Willis G. Smith). According to Sellers, this Nathan Evans (born ca 1805) settled "below Marion", and from what I can gather, this area was somewhere east of Catfish Creek in what is now Rowell Township, or perhaps Marion Township near Smith Swamp or in Legette Township (where Stephen lived later on).

1 Free Colored Male age 24-35 (1804-1816) Stephen TURNER (1809/10)

Stephen's family members were all listed in the "White" columns, but Stephen himself was listed in the "Free Colored" column. In addition, for the 1860 census, Stephen Turner and family were all listed with a race code of "M" (Mulatto). Census takers used the "Free Colored" and "Mulatto" designation to show a person of mixed race, whether they be part Indian, part Black, or of some other origin (darker skinned). A large portion of the Turners of Marion County fell into this category. One of the earliest Turner's in the area was John Turner Sr (c1740-c1804) and his wife Patience. John and Patience could be the grandparents of Stephen Turner. John and Patience were listed in this mixed race category, and there are several public records relating to them. See their page for more on this subject.

For some reason, Stephen Turner and family were not listed on the 1850 census. They might have been missed by the census taker, or perhaps had moved away briefly, though I did not find them anywhere else that year.

For the 1860 census, Stephen and family were back in Marion District. He was in the area that became Legette Township. William Turner (his son) was next door. They were only 18 households from my ancestor Daniel Turner, who named one of his children "Stephen", so that may indicate a relationship between them, perhaps they were brothers.

Apparently, both Stephen and Mary Ann died between 1880 and 1900. I didn't find them on the 1900 census in Legette Township, nor in anywhere else in Marion County. I did find several of their children in Legette on the 1900 census. Some of their children are buried at Ariel Baptist Church Cemetery, and some at Centenary Methodist Church Cemetery. Perhaps Stephen and Mary Ann are buried at one of those places.

Donald W. Turner told me the following about where Stephen and Mary Ann are buried:

"Dad says that Stephen, Sr. is buried not far from Ariels Crossroads Baptist Church also. He tells me that his father once showed him where Stephen is buried. Even then, the burial site had been converted to cultivated land & there were no markers in evidence. The site is supposedly east of Ariels Crossroads Church, about 1/2 mile on the left. It was a Cook family cemetery. "

Children

Stephen Turner and Mary Ann Cooper had at least nine children, eight of whom are proven by the 1860 through 1880 census, and one (William Turner) as told to me by Donald Turner.

William Turner (1833-1905)

Unknown Daughter (c1835/40)

Jane Turner (c1838/39)

Telatha Turner (c1840/41)

Stephen Turner (c1843/44-1932)

Susan Turner (1846-1941)

Catherine Turner (c1847/48)

Anna Turner (c1849/50-1853)

Hannibal Preston Turner (1850-1940)

Thomas Edward Turner (1854-1929)

William Turner was born 30 Dec 1833 (per Donald Turner) in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby or Moody Township. This birth date doesn't agree with any of his census entries. His 1860 entry gives his age as 30 (born ca 1829/30), while 1870 gives 38 (ca 1831/32), 1880 gives 48 (ca 1831/32). The 1900 census gives his age as 72 and gives his birth month and year as December 1827.

Like his parents, William was not listed on the 1850 census in Marion. I don't have any direct proof that he belongs in Stephen's family, but it seems likely. Donald W. Turner, a descendant, says he is a son of Stephen. William was listed next to Stephen on the 1860 census and was also nearby in 1870, so it does seem likely that they are father and son.

William Turner married Elizabeth J. Cribb before ca 1853. I had no clues as to her maiden name until Donald W. Turner recently told me that his father said Elizabeth was a Cribb. This helped a lot, because I am also a Cribb researcher, and I had an Elizabeth Cribb in my files this exact age, who married about this same time to someone unknown, so now I'm reasonably sure (but this is not completely proven) that this Elizabeth Cribb is the same as the one who is a daughter of John and Lydia Cribb. The ages match, and so does everything else, so their seems little doubt.

William Turner and family were listed on the 1860 census, apparently in what later became Legette Township. They were listed next door to Stephen Turner.

For the Civil War, William Turner may have served. A record was found for "W. Turner" in Company E, 23rd Regiment (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, page 613).  That was the same unit that William's brother Stephen served in, so this could be him.

There was also a William Turner listed in Gregg's Battery, Co. D, Manigault's Battalion Artillery (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, page 619).

There was yet another William Turner listed in the group of "militia last called into service" (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, page 646). However, this group was mainly made up of those who had previously been considered too old or too young to serve, so probably isn't this William, as his age was just right for service.

William Turner and family were listed on the 1870 census, still in Legette Township. He was only a few houses from his parents.

William Turner died on 14 Jul 1905 (per Donald W. Turner) in Marion Co, SC. I don't have a death date for Elizabeth. I don't know where they are buried either. Donald W. Turner says his dad is sure that William and Elizabeth are buried at Ariel's Crossroads Baptist Church:

When I was there with him this August (1999), he pointed out the spot to me. It's right next to his son William & also near William Monroe & Annie Lambert Turner. As I said before, he is sure enough that he wants to erect tombstones for them there.

Unknown Daughter born ca 1835/40. She was listed with the Stephen Turner family on the 1840 census. This could be Elizabeth Turner born ca 1834/35 who was living just two houses from Stephen's family in 1860, residing with William and Elisabeth Carter. I didn't find this Elizabeth on the 1850 census, nor in 1870.

Jane Turner was born ca 1838/39 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby or Moody Township. Like her parents, she was not listed on the 1850 census in Marion. However, she was with them for the 1860 and 1870 census. She was gone by 1880, so probably had married or died by then.

Telatha Turner was born ca 1840/41 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby or Moody Township. Like her parents, she was not listed on the 1850 census in Marion. However, she was with them for the 1860 census.

I think that Telatha married James Turner before 1870. For the 1870 census, James and his wife Telatha were listed next door to Stephen Turner. However, by 1880 Telatha was back home with her parents, but James was nowhere to be found. I may be wrong that James' wife Telatha is the same person, but it seems likely.

James and Telatha apparently had one child: Ellen Turner, and James died sometime prior to 1880. For the 1880 census, Telatha was listed with her parents again. Her marital status was listed as "single", so I could have interpreted this data incorrectly, but census records are often in error, so I'm not ready to discard this yet. An Ellen Turner age 9 was also listed with Stephen and family and listed as "daughter" of Stephen, but the 1900 census shows Ellen with Susan Turner's family (sister of Telatha) and listed as "Niece". So I think that helps my theory.

I didn't find Telatha Turner on the 1900 census, so she may have remarried by then, or perhaps had died.  See James & Telitha's page for more information.

Stephen Turner was born ca 1843/44 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby or Moody Township. Like his parents, he was not listed on the 1850 census in Marion. However, he was with them for the 1860 census.

For the Civil War, Stephen Turner enlisted as a Private in Company E, 23rd Regiment (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, page 613).

Stephen Turner was home with his parents for the 1870 census in Legette Township.

He married Mary --- ca 1870. I have no clues as to her maiden name. Treasa Bortree, a Great Granddaughter of Stephen and Mary, believes that Mary's maiden name is Barnes. If so, then I'm probably related to her, as Barnes is one of my ancestral names from Marion County. If she is a Barnes, I don't know what family she is part of. I have no Mary Barnes in my records born ca 1858.

Stephen and family were listed on the 1880 census in Legette Township. They had an "Adopted son" (William G. Turner) with them. I don't know if he was a relative or not. Quite often "adopted" children in those days were really nieces or nephews. William G. Turner could be a son of Stephen's sister Telatha Turner (who married James Turner). That is just a guess though. Treasa Bortree said that the child was not a relative, but was given to Stephen and Mary after both of his parents died. Stephen and family were listed next door to his parents for the 1880 census.

Mary, wife of Stephen Turner died in 1910, per her tombstone at Centenary Methodist Church. It lists her as Mary Turner, 1857-1910.

I did not find Stephen Turner listed on the 1910 census. I may have missed him.

In 1920, Stephen was living with his brother Thomas.

Stephen Turner died 1932. His tombstone, also at Centenary, says Steve Turner 1843-1932.

Susan Turner was born 5 Sep 1846 (per tombstone) in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby or Moody Township. Like her parents, she was not listed on the 1850 census in Marion. However, she was with them for the 1860 and 1870 census. By the 1880 census she had several children, born out of wedlock, and she and her children were living with her parents, in Legette Township.

For the 1900 census, Susan was listed as a head of household, still in Legette Township. This census shows that she had 6 children born to her, but only 5 still living at that time. Her age was listed as "about 44", and no birth month and year were given for her.

Susan Turner died 19 Sep 1941 in Marion Co, SC. She is buried at Ariel Baptist Church in Marion County. Her stone lists: Susan Turner 9-5-1846 - 9-19-1941.

Catherine Turner was born ca 1847/48 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby or Moody Township. Like her parents, she was not listed on the 1850 census in Marion. However, she was with them for the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census. I didn't find her on the 1900 census, so she may have married or died by then.

Anna Turner was born ca 1849/50 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby or Moody Township. Like her parents, she was not listed on the 1850 census in Marion. She died 27 Apr 1853 per an Obituary in the Marion Star (The South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research SCMAR, Volume II Number 2, Spring, 1974 Marriage and Obituary Notices from the Marion Star No. 2, p.68)

"Died in this District, on the 27th April, Anna Turner, daughter of Mr. S. and Mrs. Mary Turner, aged three years (ibid.)"

Hannibal Preston Turner was born 16 Nov 1850 (per his tombstone) in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby or Moody Township. He was with his parents for the 1860 and 1870 census.

Preston married Cely O --- sometime before 1880 in Marion County. "Cely" could be a nickname for "Celia". I don't have any clues as to her maiden name. They were listed on the 1880 census just a few houses from his brother Thomas E. Turner. Preston and wife had a 10 year old "Mary G. Turner" residing with them, but she is too old to be their daughter, so I'm not sure who she is. It is possible that she is another child of Preston's sister Telatha Turner (who married James Turner). That is just a guess though. The 1880 census did not list the relationship between her and Preston.

Celia, wife of Preston Turner, died sometime between 1880 and 1884, presumably in Marion County.

Preston Turner married Mary Jane Holden ca 1883/84. Her maiden name is proven by her tombstone, and this marriage date is based on the 1900 census, listing them as being married 16 years.

They were listed on the 1900 census in Legette Township, but not listed too close to any other Turners.

Preston Turner died 6 Sep 1940 and his wife Mary died 24 Aug 1943. Both are buried at the Centenary Methodist Church Cemetery. His stone gives this information: Hannibal Preston Turner 11-16-1850 - 9-16-1940. Her stone gives: Mary Jane Holden Turner 1-22-1869 - 8-24-1943. Several of their children and other relatives are buried at the same cemetery.

Thomas Edward Turner was born 7 Dec 1854 (per his tombstone) in Marion District, SC, presumably in Kirby or Moody Township, however, by this time, the family may have been in Legette Township already. He was with his parents for the 1860 and 1870 census.

Thomas married Elizabeth "Bettie" Campbell ca 1880. Her maiden name was told to me by Mavis Jackson, and is also proven by her tombstone. I am also a Campbell researcher, so I have additional data on her and her family.

Thomas and wife were listed on the 1880 census in Legette Township, just a few households from his brother Preston Turner.
