Theophilus Turner (c1813) and Martha --- of Marion Co, SC[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to the Theophilus Turner family, but I am very interested in him though. Theophilus Turner was born ca 1813/14 in Marion District, SC, presumably in the area east of Catfish Creek in Moody Township. Theophilus is a proven son of William Turner and Catherine Martin (per an 1855 deed). Theophilus Turner was probably home with his parents for the 1820 census. In 1830 there was no one his age with the William Turner family. Theophilus would have been about 16 or 17 then, so probably was in some other household as a hired hand. Theophilus Turner married Martha --- before 1837. I don't know what her maiden name was. Theophilus Turner was listed on the 1840 census in Marion District, SC. He was listed near several other Turner families, including his brother Martin M. Turner, just two houses away. Other neighbors in the same area, are known residents of Moody Township area near Ebenezer Cemetery, west of Temperance Hill, between there and Catfish Creek. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Marion District, SC pg 141 Theophilus Turner 1000100000000-1000100000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 20-29 (1810-1820) Theophilus TURNER (1813/14) s/o William 1 Male(s) 0-4 (1835-1840) David TURNER (1840/41) son 1 Female(s) 20-29 (1810-1820) Martha ___ Turner (1813/14) wife 1 Female(s) 0-4 (1835-1840) Mary TURNER (1836/37) daughter Theophilus Turner and family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion District, SC. He was listed two houses from his father William Turner. This is roughly the same area I described for the 1840 census, being in what later became Moody Township.

This was 58 acres. Witnesses were James W. Bass and S. Fore. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book W page 501). Theophilus and family must have moved away after 1850 (or died), as I did not locate them in 1860 or on later census records in Marion County. I checked the 1860 index and found a Theophilus in Titus Co, TX and one in Clay Co, KY, but on checking, neither was this same family. ChildrenTheophilus Turner and Martha had at least two children, as proven by the 1850 census.
