My Waters FamilyMichael Waters (c1760/70-c1838/40) and Emelia Stewart of NC (Cabarrus, Mecklenburg, Haywood, Macon) Introduction - A History of my research on this family My Waters Family - Data on my Waters ancestors IntroductionThe Waters family was one I never knew about growing up, but when I first got started in genealogy (I mean the first day), I found out about my connection to this family. We were visiting my Great Grandmother Della Wright George in Topton, Cherokee Co, NC back in 1980, and while there I got the genealogy bug. She told me that her mother was a Waters. My Aunt Marynell George Lequire told me a little about the Waters family at that time, but for a long time I never added anything to what little she had given me. I knew that Della's mother was Dulcenia Waters, wife of Aaron A. Wright. That was all I had. After a few years I found Thelma Welch Swanson (deceased) who was a Fouts researcher, and she knew a good bit about the Waters (who are related to the Fouts). She gave me a little more on the Waters, including Dulcenia's parents as Jacob J. Waters and Emily Tanner. She also gave me Jacob's parents as Michael Jackson Waters and Rebecca Fouts. She gave Michael's parents as Michael Waters and "Permelia" Waters (actually "Emelia"). After a few years of research I was able to fill in various blanks in this family, but mostly by myself. Very recently my cousin Jane Driver informed us that Michael Waters (Sr)'s wife Emelia was a "Stewart", and this helped explain several things that I already knew, but couldn't quite reconcile. She also provided some family tradition on Michael Waters that I had no prior knowledge of, and information on her branch of the family also. For years I thought I was the only one interested in the Waters family, though in the past 2 or 3 years, I've found several cousins (mostly online) who were also interested. They have graciously shared data on their branches of the family. My Waters ancestorsMichael Waters was born ca 1760/70 somewhere. Family tradition (from my Great Grandmother) says that the Waters family was "Black Dutch", but I've found no confirmation of that, or anyone else in the family with a similar tradition). Michael appeared in Cabarrus Co, NC in the 1790's where he married Emelia Stewart. They lived in Cabarrus until ca 1805 when they moved to neighboring Mecklenburg Co, NC. They lived there until ca 1817 when they moved to what is now Macon Co, NC (then Haywood) where they remained. Michael died there ca 1838/40, and Emelia ca 1840/50. Michael and Emelia were parents of several children, including Michael Jackson Waters, born ca 1815/20 in Mecklenburg Co, NC. M. J. Waters married Rebecca Fouts in 1838 in Macon Co, NC. They had two children before his death in 1846. M. J. Waters and Rebecca Fouts were parents of Jacob Jackson Waters, born 1842 in Macon Co, NC. Jacob married Emily A. Tanner ca 1861 in Towns Co, GA, but continued to live in Macon Co, NC. Emily died in 1875, and Jacob married Martha Jane Fouts in 1878. Jacob died 1923 in Macon Co, NC. Jacob and Emily were parents of Annis Dulcenia Waters, born 1862 in Macon Co, NC. Dulcenia married Aaron Alexander Wright in 1876 and they lived in Cherokee Co, NC until their deaths. Dulcenia died in 1918. A. A. and Dulcenia Waters Wright were my Great Great Grandparents.
