Caleb Winfrey and Arabella Moody of Surry and Cherokee Co, NC

Caleb Winfrey was born ca 1799/1800, in Surry Co, NC, presumably in the Mitchells River area. Caleb (Jr) is a proven son of Caleb Winfrey (Sr) and Nancy Bowles. After the death of Caleb (Sr)'s first wife Nancy Bowles, he deeded property to his children, just before he remarried.

On 20 Nov 1809 Caleb Winfrey gave a deed of gift to his "sons" Isaac Winfrey, Thomas Winfrey, Caleb Winfrey and John Winfrey, property in Surry Co, NC. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book M page 319).

I didn't find Caleb Winfrey on the 1820 census, nor did he seem to be residing with his father Caleb (though he had just one boy age 16-25 (c1794/1804) with him in 1820, I can't be sure if it was Caleb or one of his brothers). Isaac was probably residing with another family as a laborer.

Caleb Winfrey married Arabella Moody ca 1821 in Surry Co, NC. She was a daughter of John Moody and Mary Roberts.

Caleb was listed on the 1830 census in Surry Co, NC on the same page with his brother Thomas Winfrey.

On 31 Jan 1838 a deed was made among several of Caleb Winfrey (Sr)'s heirs, dividing up his Yadkin river land. Lot # 1 went to his son Thomas Winfrey. Lot # 2 to son Caleb Winfrey and Lot # 3 to son Isaac Winfrey. A plat map was attached showing this land. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book X page 49).

On 6 Nov 1839 Caleb Winfrey sold property to Lemuel B. Jones. Caleb's son-in-law James Wright was a witness. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book Y page 213).

Caleb Winfrey was listed on the 1840 census in Surry Co, NC. There were some extra people with him, but I'm quite sure I know who they were.

On 11 May 1840 Caleb Winfrey and Lemuel B. Jones sold property to Jonathan Jones. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 340).

Caleb's brother Isaac died in 1838, and his estate was divided up among his siblings on 28 Aug 1840, and Caleb Winfrey was named as one of his heirs. (Surry Co, NC Estate Book 2 page 14).

In 1840 or early 1841 Caleb Winfrey and family, and his son-in-law James S. Wright left Surry Co, NC and moved to Cherokee Co, NC where they settled along the Valley River in what is now Valleytown Township in the river valley between Andrews and Topton.

Caleb and family were listed in Cherokee Co, NC for the 1860 census. This census taker in 1860 was a blessing to genealogists, he took down the county of birth of everyone, and not just the state.

Caleb Winfrey died in the 1860's in Cherokee Co, NC, and I suspect he is buried at Red Marble Baptist Church Cemetery in one of the graves marked with a field stone.

In 1880 she was still in Cherokee Co, NC, with her sister Eliza Moody residing with her.

Arabella died sometime after 1880, but before 1900. She is probably also buried at Red Marble Baptist Church Cemetery in grave marked with a field stone.

Children

Caleb Winfrey and Arabella Moody had five children, all proven by census records, death records and some by circumstantial evidence.

Caroline C. Winfrey was born 13 Dec 1822 in Surry Co, NC (date on her tombstone, and same month and year on 1900 census). Caroline is not a proven daughter of Caleb and Arabella, but the circumstantial evidence seems overwhelming. Family tradition and people who knew her said her maiden name was a Winfrey. The death records for several of her children list her maiden name as "Winfrey".

Caroline C. Winfrey married James S. Wright ca 1837/38 in Surry Co, NC. James Wright and Caleb Winfrey were associated together in many ways in both Surry Co, NC and Cherokee Co, NC, and owned land jointly in Cherokee Co, NC. James and Caroline named their oldest daughter "Arabella", presumably after Caroline's mother Arabella Moody Winfrey.

James S. Wright and wife moved to Cherokee Co, NC at the same time as Caleb Winfrey and family, and they lived by each other along the Valley River.

Emaline "Emily" Winfrey was born 11 Feb 1823 (per her tombstone) or January 1825 per the 1900 census. This latter date agrees with her ages on the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 census records, as well as 1900. She was born in Surry Co, NC (per the 1860 census record).

She came with her parents from Surry to Cherokee Co, NC ca 1840/41 and about that same time she married William Cruise in Cherokee Co, NC.

For the 1850 census, William and Emily were listed two houses from her parents, in Cherokee Co, NC, and next to her sister Elizabeth Winfrey Rogers on one side (between her and her parents), and her sister Caroline Winfrey Wright on the other side.

For the 1860 census, Emily and family were in Cherokee Co, NC. They were three houses from her sister Eliza Winfrey Phillips on one side and on the other just two houses from sister Elizabeth Winfrey Rogers who was just two from their sister Caroline Winfrey Wright. The 1860 census taker listed county of birth instead of just the state.

William Cruise died sometime between ca 1863 and 1870, perhaps as a result of the Civil War (1861-1865).

Emily Winfrey Cruise was listed as head of household for the 1870 census, just six houses from her brother Isaac B. Winfrey.

Between 1870 and 1880 Emily moved just a few miles over the mountains into the Briertown area of Macon Co, NC, in Nantahala Township. She was listed there on the 1880 census. She was listed next door to her daughter Nancy Cruise who had married Joseph Holmes Bryson (son of James Nail Bryson).

By 1900, Emily was back in Cherokee Co, NC, residing with her son William A. Cruise. Emily's sister Eliza Winfrey Phillips was just six houses away, and their sister Elizabeth Winfrey Rogers was four houses away on the other side.

Emily Winfrey Cruise died on 6 Sep 1906 in either Cherokee or Macon Co, NC. She is buried at the Briertown Cemetery in Macon Co, NC.

Eliza A. Winfrey was born August 1829 in Surry Co, NC. She came to Cherokee Co, NC with her parents ca 1840-1841. She was at home with them for the 1850 census.

They were listed on the 1870 census in Cherokee Co, NC next door to Eliza's widowed mother Arabella and just a couple of houses from sister Caroline Winfrey Wright and sister Elizabeth Winfrey Rogers.

For the 1880 census, they were in Cherokee Co, NC still, with many relatives nearby.

For the 1900 census, they were still in Cherokee Co, NC, again with many relatives nearby.

Eliza Winfrey Phillips died on 23 Apr 1915 in Cherokee Co, NC. Her death record lists her as "Lizzie Phillips" and lists her father as "Caleb Winfrey" and mother as "Ira Moody".

James M. Phillips died sometime after the 1910 census, but I don't know when. I don't know where either of them are buried.

Elizabeth Winfrey was born ca May 1831 in Surry Co, NC. The 1900 census shows her born May 1835, but at least two other records show her born ca 1831/32, so if "May" is correct, it might be May 1831 or May 1832. 1835 seems unlikely. Her tombstone gives only a birth year of "1831", so that is what I base "May 1831" on.

She married Barney Rogers ca 1849/50 in Cherokee Co, NC. Barney is a son of James Rogers.

Barney and Elizabeth were listed on the 1850 census in Cherokee Co, NC, between her parents and her sister Emily Winfrey Cruise.

For the 1870 census, Barney and Elizabeth were still in Cherokee Co, NC and next door to her sister Caroline Winfrey Wright and just two houses from their widowed mother Arabella Moody Winfrey.

Barney and Elizabeth had moved a short distance into Graham County by the time of the 1880 census.

They were back to Cherokee Co, NC by the 1900 census very near several relatives.

Barney Rogers died in 1905 in Cherokee Co, NC. He is buried at Red Marble Baptist Church Cemetery. His marker says "Barney Rogers 1822-1905".

Elizabeth Winfrey Rogers died in 1908 in Cherokee Co, NC. She is buried at Red Marble Baptist Church Cemetery. Her marker says "Betsie Rogers 1831-1908".

Isaac B. Winfrey was born 8 Nov 1835 in Surry Co, NC. (Date per tombstone). He came with his parents from Surry Co, NC to Cherokee Co, NC ca 1840-41.

Isaac married Sarah Pamela Colvard circa 1858 in Cherokee Co, NC. She was a daughter of James C. Colvard and Catherine Mahala Sherrill of Graham Co, NC.

Isaac Winfrey died on 19 Aug 1920 in Cherokee Co, NC. His death record shows his father as "Isaac Winfrey" (wrong), and his mother as "Ira Moody". He is buried at Valleytown Cemetery in Andrews.

Sarah P. Colvard Winfrey died on 25 Jan 1823 in either Cherokee or Macon Co, NC.
