[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]
I (Marty Grant) am a 4th Great Grandson of Aaron Wright and Mary Murphy.
Special thanks to Alton Wright, Jim Cockerham and others for data shared on this family.
Aaron Wright was born ca 1765/75, probably in Surry Co, NC, though family tradition says he was born in Ireland. I think the tradition is half right, and he was of Irish stock, but it seems much more likely that he was born in North Carolina. After 20 years of research, I have still not been able to determine who Aaron Wright's parents were, nor do I have any strong suspects. In the book Our Heritage by Margaret Walker Freel (1950's, I think), she included a short article on the Wright family of Cherokee Co, NC, written by (or told by) Mrs. Bruce King, in the opening paragraph (page 370) she stated this:
The Wright family is of Irish descent. The first immigrant of the Wrights in America settled in the State of KY for a period. Later the family migrated to near present Oxford, N.C., then to Surry Co. To Aran Wright was born a son by name of James.
I've been able to confirm the KY connection, but not the Oxford, NC connection.
One strong clue about Aaron Wright's possible parentage comes from his association with David Riggs (1749-1837). David was married to Miriam Wright (1748-1814), a daughter of Hezekiah Wright (1728-1784) and Catherine Durling. Aaron Wright and David Riggs were found together on several records, indicating some form of relationship. The first was a 1785 court case where they both acted as witnesses for in a case against William Underwood. This doesn't prove they were connected with each other however. But, when Aaron Wright obtained a marriage bond in 1792, David Riggs (and Thomas York) acted as bondsman. This implies a close relative, or close friend. Then, in 1795, David Riggs entered 50 acres of land on Big Reedy Fork of Mitchell's River, including "improvements by Aaron Wright". This shows that Aaron Wright once lived on the same land, or at least he farmed it, or something.
Other researchers have shown that David Riggs' wife was Miriam Wright, born ca 1748 in Oyster Bay, New York, and that she married David Riggs ca 1771 in Surry Co, NC. There are several possible conclusions we can draw from this, but none of them are proven well enough for me to consider it likely (yet).
First theory, Aaron Wright is a son of Hezekiah Wright. Miriam Wright was approximately 20 years older than Aaron Wright. She could be an older sister, making Aaron Wright a son of Hezekiah Wright. Hezekiah and his wife would only have been in their late 40's or so when Aaron was born, so this is possible. However, I've been in contact with several researchers descended from Hezekiah, and none of them know anything about Aaron Wright.
Second theory, Aaron Wright is a son of Miriam Wright, born out of wedlock before her marriage to David Riggs, thus making David Riggs his step-father. I have no evidence to support this, but it is a possibility. David Riggs 1790 census household contained 2 males over 16 (born before 1774), and 5 males under 16 (ca 1774-1790). This fits perfectly with his six known children, so there is no room there for Aaron Wright.
Third theory, Aaron Wright is a grandson of Hezekiah via an unknown son (or daughter), thereby making him a nephew of David Riggs and Miriam Wright.
Fourth theory, Aaron Wright is not related to David Riggs, but they were neighbors, and therefore associated, perhaps as friends. His surname being the same as David's wife being a coincidence.
Of the above theories, I have no favorite. Further research is needed to properly sort this out. Tax lists show a few other possible parents for Aaron Wright. In 1771 Surry Co, NC, there was a Samuel Wright listed, and he was the only one for that year. In 1772, Samuel was listed again, as well as Gideon Wright and Hezekiah Wright (brothers). In 1774 it was just Gideon and Samuel. In 1775, it was Hezekiah, Samuel and new entries for John Wright and William Wright (probably a son of Samuel).
The 1782 Tax list for Surry Co, NC shows Daniel Wright, John Wright and Thomas Wright. Daniel and Thomas were both sons of John Wright. There were also Wright families in Wilkes Co, NC at this time. Aaron Wright lived very close to the Wilkes County border, so he may come from Wilkes instead of Surry.
The first record we have for Aaron Wright is in the Surry Co, NC Court Minutes. On 11 May 1785 Aaron Wright proves that he travelled 120 miles, and spent 5 days as a witness in a case of the State against William Underwood. David Riggs was also a witness in this case.
Aaron Wright did not appear on the 1786 census of Surry Co, NC nor the 1787 census of Wilkes Co, NC. In 1786 Surry there was a Sarah Wright listed, and Thomas and John Wright. Daniel Wright was in Wilkes by then.
Aaron Wright did not appear on the 1790 census. He was probably still at home with his parents at that time. The 1790 census of Surry Co, NC shows Thomas Wright (son of John Wright); Ann (widow of John Wright), James, John and William, all sons of John Wright. Based on lots of research, it seems that Aaron Wright was not related to the John Wright family, at least not as far as I can determine. Aaron could be part of that family somehow, but I don't know how.
On 16 Nov 1792 Aaron Wright obtained a marriage bond in Surry Co, NC to marry. The intended brides name was very difficult to read, in fact, the published version of these bonds leave her name blank. The bondsmen were David Riggs and Thomas York. One day at the North Carolina Archives, I studied the bond (on microfilm) and thought I could make out the brides name as "Mary Ryon". I was sure about "Mary", but not about "Ryon". However, I've since found out that her maiden name was Murphy, but I haven't had a chance to look at the bond again to see if it actually said "Murphy" or not. It is possible that I read it correctly, and that she was a Murphy, but she had married a Ryon (or Ryan) before marrying Aaron Wright. I'll have to see the bond again before I can comment further. There is solid evidence that she was a daughter of Richard Murphy and Keziah Terry.
Sometime around 1795, several members of the Murphy family moved to Lincoln Co, KY, and the Aaron Wright family went with them.
Unfortunately, the 1800 census for KY was lost, but an 1800 tax list for Lincoln Co, KY shows an "Aaron Rite" listed.
For some reason or another, the Aaron Wright family decided to move back to Surry Co, NC, and came back between ca 1802 and 1805 (based on birth places of their children). They apparently returned to the same area they had been before.
Aaron Wright was listed on the 1810 census in Surry Co, NC, and was not anywhere close to any other Wright families. He was listed very close to several people known to live right along the Surry - Wilkes County border somewhere between the Mitchell River and the State Road community.

Aaron Wright was listed on the 1812 Surry Co, NC tax list in Captain Witcher's company.
He was also listed on the 1815 tax list, and listed with 123 acres on Mitchells River and with 1 white poll and 1 black poll (slave). Aaron was also listed in regards to the estate of Moses Williams including 450 acres on Reedy Fork Creek. This would indicate that Aaron was executor or administrator of the estate of Moses Williams. I don't know of any relationship there, but there could be.
He was also listed on the 1816 tax list, with the same land, but this time he was listed with 0 white polls, though he still had one black poll.
Aaron Wright was listed on the 1820 census in Surry Co, NC, again not near any other Wright families. There was an apparent widow Elizabeth Wright on the next page. I'm not sure who she is yet.

On 20 Feb 1822 Aaron Wright sold land to Thomas Nixon, and again on 25 Feb 1822. I don't have the details of the deed yet, but both deeds were witnessed by Daniel Wright and Daniel Wolf Jr. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book R page 9 and page 11).
The 1822 deeds are the last records I found for Aaron Wright. He died sometime between then and 1830. His widow Mary Murphy Wright was listed as head of household on the 1830 census in Surry Co, NC. She wasn't listed near any other Wright families.

Mary was still in Surry Co, NC for the 1840 census, and not too close to any other Wright families.

Sometime before 1850, Mary and several of her children moved to the southwest, with one son (James) stopping in Cherokee Co, NC, and with her stopping in Union Co, GA (borders Cherokee Co, NC).
For the 1850 census, Mary was residing with her son Richard and his family, as well as several grandchildren by her (presumed) deceased daughter Rebecca Wright Crummell.

I didn't find Mary on the 1860 census, but some of her children and grandchildren were still in Union Co, GA, so this may mean she died during the 1850's. I don't know what part of Union Co, GA they lived in exactly.
I have very little direct proof for any children of Aaron Wright and Mary Murphy, however, they had several children based on census analysis, family tradition and various other records. Circumstantial evidence is strong for all of these.
Unknown Daughter (c1794/1800) Nancy (c1798)
Daniel S. Wright was born ca 1793/94 in Surry Co, NC, presumably in the Mitchell River area. I have no direct proof that he is a son of Aaron Wright and Mary Murphy, but plenty of circumstantial evidence supports it.
First of all his oldest son was named "Richard Murphy Wright". Richard Murphy was Mary Murphy Wright's father, so this makes sense for Daniel to name a son after him. He also named a son "Zadock" presumably after his brother Zadock. He named another son James, presumably after his brother James, and a daughter Minnie, presumably after sister Minnie. Besides the naming patterns, Daniel S. Wright lived in the same area, and he witnessed two 1822 deeds of his father Aaron Wright. He also witnessed an 1837 deed of his brother James S. Wright. It all adds up, and several researchers that I've been in touch with also had Daniel as a son of Aaron, based on family tradition, so that works too. Some more direct evidence would be nice, but none may exist. However, I'm 99% sure Daniel is a son of Aaron.
Daniel S. Wright married Patience Franklin before 1818 in Surry Co, NC. See his own page for more information on him.
Sarah Wright was born ca 1795/96 in Surry Co, NC, presumably in the Mitchell River area. I have no direct proof that she is a child of Aaron Wright and Mary Murphy, but plenty of circumstantial evidence supports it.
Thanks to James E. Cockerham for most of the data I have on this branch of the family.
Sarah Wright married Henderson Thompson on 11 Jan 1821 in Surry Co, NC "at Aaron Wrights" per Henderson Thompson's War of 1812 Pension application. The fact that they married at Aaron Wright's house is a strong indication that Sarah was Aaron's daughter. This marriage was not recorded in the Surry Co, NC marriage bonds.
They lived in the Mitchell River area also, and other circumstantial evidence also supports her being a daughter of Aaron Wright. They named their first born son "Aaron", presumably after her father, and the next son was "Joseph", after his father.
Henderson Thompson was listed on the 1830 Surry Co, NC census. Mary Murphy Wright was listed close by, but on the previous page.

Henderson Thompson was listed on the 1840 census in Surry Co, NC. Once again, Mary Murphy Wright was nearby, but on the previous page. There was an older man living with them on this census, presumably this is Henderson's father Joseph Thompson.

Henderson Thompson and family were listed on the 1850 census in Surry Co, NC in the "Northern Division" (the Southern division became Yadkin County that same year), and "Thompson's District". Henderson's father Joseph was still residing with them.

I haven't followed this family into more recent times, but Sarah died in 1870, and Henderson on 6 Sep 1881, both in Surry Co, NC. Most of the birth and death dates I have listed for this family are courtesy of Jim Cockerham.
Unknown Daughter born ca 1794/1800 was with the Aaron Wright family on the 1810 census. Whomever she was, she was no longer with the family in 1820, so probably had married or died by then.
Jim Cockerham has a theory that this might be Nancy (c1798-c1866), wife of William Cockerham (1798-1852). Jim said his data showed her maiden name as White, but she was in an area with no White families, so Jim has speculated her name may actually be Wright instead. Her age is a good fit with this unknown daughter of Aaron Wright. She lived in the right area, and the Cockerham family was associated with the Wrights in various ways, so it works on that basis. However, Jim and I both would like more data before we comit to Nancy being a Wright instead of a White.
As far as "White" vs "Wright", here is what Jim told me in a letter several years ago:
"According to Mrs. Mamie (Cockerham) Thompson, great-grand daughter of of this couple, Nancy was a "White" pryor to her marriage, but all Whites in the area have been accounted for. It is probable that the name is "Wright", and Mrs. Thompson had in mind the White family of Richard C. White, which is her line of descent."
Richard Wright was born ca 1800/1801 in Lincoln Co, KY. He was probably named after his grandfather Richard Murphy. I don't know if he had "Murphy" as a middle name or not. Almost every Wright in this family named "Richard" was actually named "Richard Murphy Wright" in honor of Richard Murphy. However, I don't know if that is the case with this one.
Richard was apparently home with Aaron Wright for the 1810 and 1820 census. He didn't seem to be with his widowed mother for the 1830 census, but he did seem to be back with her for the 1840 census.
Richard married later than most, already in his 40's before he married Kisiah --- ca 1840/1843. I don't know if they married in Surry Co, NC or elsewhere. Richard and family, and his widowed mother and several siblings all left Surry Co, NC in the 1840's and moved to Union Co, GA.
He was listed on the 1850 census in Union Co, GA, with his widowed mother Mary residing with him. He also had the children of his deceased sister Rebecca Wright Crummell residing with him.

Richard and family were not in Union Co, GA for the 1860 census. I don't know where they moved to.
Minnie Wright was born ca 1801/1802 in Lincoln Co, KY. She was still single as of 1850, so she may have never married.
She was apparently home with her father Aaron Wright for the 1810 and 1820 census. She was apparently home with her widowed mother Mary for the 1830 and 1840 census. During the 1840's much of the family left Surry Co, NC and moved to Union Co, GA. Minnie went with them. For the 1850 census, she was residing with her brother Zadock Wright. He was still in Union Co, GA for the 1860 census, but I didn't find Minnie there in 1860. I don't know where she went to, perhaps wherever her brother Richard went was where she went as well.
Unknown Daughter was born ca 1800/1804 in either Lincoln Co, KY or Surry Co, NC. She was with her father Aaron Wright for the 1810 and 1820 census, and possibly with her widowed mother Mary for the 1830 census. She was gone by 1840, so probably had married or died by then. So far I have no clues who this might be.
Zadock Wright (c1805) was born ca 1804/1805 in Surry Co, NC, presumably in the Mitchell River area. He was presumably named after Zadock Riggs (1754-1846), Mary Murphy Wright's brother-in-law (who was married to Mary's half sister Sarah Scott).
Zadock Wright was apparently home with his father Aaron Wright for the 1810 and 1820 census in Surry Co, NC.
He married Mary Anna --- sometime before ca 1828 probably in Monroe Co, TN. He apparently moved there sometime after 1820. They were listed there on the 1830 census.

The birth places of their children indicate they moved around alot. They were in TN from ca 1828 to ca 1830. By 1835 they were somewhere in VA and still there ca 1837. In 1839 they were back in NC (back in Surry County?), but by 1843 they were in Union Co, GA.
I didn't find them on the 1840 census, but I'm still looking. They were in Union Co, GA for the 1850 census. Zadock's apparent sister Minnie Wright was residing with them there. His widowed mother Mary and his brother Richard were also in Union Co, GA by 1850.

Zadock and family were still in Union Co, GA for the 1860 and 1870 census. In 1870 he was listed as a Mail Carrier.
Rebecca Wright (c1804/10) was born ca 1804/10 presumably in Surry Co, NC. She was apparently with her parents for the 1810, 1820 and 1830 census.
On 5 June 1831, William Crummell obtained a marriage bond in Surry Co, NC to marry Rebecca Wright. The bondsman was Thomas York. I'm not sure if this is the same Thomas York who was bondsman for her father Aaron Wright's 1792 marriage. That was 40 years earlier, so it may not be, but it could be anyway.
William Crummell was listed on the 1840 census in Surry Co, NC, but not anywhere near any Wright families.

Rebecca Wright Crummell died sometime during the 1840's, presumably in Surry Co, NC. Her husband was still living as late as August 1847 when he and A.B. Wright (Rebecca's brother) signed as bondsman on a bastardy bond for Temperance Weaver in Surry Co, NC. That is the last record I found for him.
For the 1850 census, William and Rebecca's four known children were living with other relatives. Three of them (Sarah, Kisiah and Zadock) were in Union Co, GA with their grandmother Mary Murphy Wright. Their son James Crummell was in Cherokee Co, NC with his uncle James S. Wright. James Crummell was still in Cherokee Co, NC for the 1860 census, and his sister Kisiah was still in Union Co, GA in 1860. I didn't find Sarah nor Zadock Crummell in 1860, at least not yet.
Unknown Son was born ca 1800/10, in either Lincoln Co, KY or Surry Co, NC. This child was apparently with Aaron Wright in 1810 and 1820, but not with his widowed mother in 1830, so he probably had married or died by then. I don't know who this might have been, but there was both a William Wright and a Moses Wright in Surry Co, NC in 1830 who were in this age category, and that was their only census entry in Surry.
Aaron B. Wright was born ca 1810/11 in Surry Co, NC, presumably in the Mitchells River area. He was apparently with his father for the 1820 census. He didn't seem to be with his mother in 1830 or 1840 though. On the 1840 census, there was a Burr Wright listed in Surry Co, NC who could be him, but on the other hand it might be Wilburn Wright instead. In either case, he wasn't near any other Wright families. Other than this census, I have no record showing what Aaron B. Wright's middle name was, "Burr" would make sense though, if named in honor of Aaron Burr.
1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)
1840 Surry Co, NC pg 100 Burr Wright 0000100000000-1000100000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 20-29 (1810-1820) Aaron B. WRIGHT (1810/11) s/o Aaron & Mary 1 Female(s) 20-29 (1810-1820) Wife? (1810/20) 1 Female(s) 0-4 (1835-1840) Daughter? (1835/40)
In August 1847 William Crummell (his brother-in-law) and A.B. Wright signed as bondsman on a bastardy bond for Temperance Weaver in Surry Co, NC.
I don't know where Aaron B. Wright was for the 1850 census. He was not listed in Surry Co, NC, nor was he in Union Co, GA with his mother and siblings, nor in Cherokee Co, NC with his brother James S. Wright. He must not have been too far away, as he served in the Civil War from Surry Co, NC.
I didn't find him on the 1860 census either.
For the Civil War, Aaron B. Wright enlisted at age 50 on 20 May 1861 (putting his birth at ca 1810/11) in Company C, 21st N.C. Regiment. The record showed he was born in Surry Co, NC and that he died 29 Apr 1862. Thanks to Jim Cockerham for that data.
It is possible that Aaron B. Wright was living in Virginia (Surry County, NC borders Patrick County, VA) during those years. I haven't seen his Civil War record myself, so I don't know if additional data is available.
I don't know if Aaron was ever married, though if that is him on the 1840 Surry Co, NC census, then apparently he was.
James S. Wright was born 23 Nov 1813 in Surry Co, NC, presumably in the Mitchells River area. He is my ancestor.
James was apparently with his father Aaron Wright for the 1820 census, and apparently with his widowed mother for the 1830 census (both in Surry Co, NC).
Around 1838 James S. Wright married Caroline C. Winfrey in Surry Co, NC. She was a daughter of Caleb Winfrey and Arabella Moody of Surry Co, NC.
James S. Wright did not appear on the 1840 census, but someone his and Caroline's ages were found in Caleb Winfrey's household, and I'm fairly sure it was them.
During the 1840's James S. Wright and the Caleb Winfrey families moved from Surry Co, NC to Cherokee Co, NC.
James S. Wright died 9 May 1902 in Cherokee Co, NC and his wife Caroline died there on 5 Dec 1916. See his own page for additional information on him.
