Daniel S. Wright (c1794) and Patience Franklin of Surry and Wilkes Co, NCHome > Genealogy > Surnames > Wright > Families > Daniel [Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) am a 3rd Great Grand nephew of Daniel S. Wright. Special thanks to Jim Cockerham, Bob Corbett, Bobbie Pierce, Eloise Wall and others for data shared on this family. Daniel S. Wright was born ca 1793/94 in Surry Co, NC, presumably in the Mitchell's River area near the Wilkes County border. His entry on the 1850 census gives his age as 62, putting his birth ca 1787/88, but that disagrees with other census records, and predates his parents marriage (1792). I've never found any solid evidence that Daniel was a child of Aaron Wright and Mary Murphy, but scads of circumstantial evidence strongly indicate it. Daniel presumably went with his parents to Lincoln Co, KY while he was still very small. This was around 1796 or so. They remained there until sometime between 1802 and 1805 when they returned to Surry Co, NC. Some records seem to indicate that Daniel may have been married twice. We know that he was married to Patience Franklin at some point, but there is a 10 year gap in the births of his children from son Richard (1818) to daughter Alsey (1828). And some of his children seemed to have resided with Daniel's mother Mary (based on census analysis, that is), and this is usually a good sign of a deceased mother. If Daniel was married before Patience Franklin, I have no idea who his wife might have been. This may also explain why Daniel seems to be with his parents on the 1820 census, even though he had children by then. Daniel S. Wright married Patience Franklin sometime between 1810 and 1818 (if she was his only wife) in Surry Co, NC. If she was a second wife, then they married sometime before 1828. I've not found any proof of her maiden name, but several of their descendants claim that was her surname. I've not taken the time to follow up on that to see if there is any evidence for or against it. Daniel S. Wright was listed on the 1815 Surry County tax list. He was listed with 100 acres of land on Mitchells River. Daniel Wright did not appear on the 1820 census, but his father Aaron Wright had extra people in his household that easily fit Daniel, his wife, and their known children at that time. I feel reasonably sure this was Daniel and family with his parents. On 20 Feb 1822 Aaron Wright sold land to Thomas Nixon, and again on 25 Feb 1822. I don't have the details of the deed yet, but both deeds were witnessed by Daniel Wright and Daniel Wolf Jr. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book R page 9 and page 11). Daniel Wright was listed on the 1830 census in Surry Co, NC. He wasn't listed near any other Wright families, but he was near members of the Franklin family (his wife's relatives). 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Surry Co, NC pg 102 Daniel S. Daniel was still in Surry Co, NC for the 1840 census, and still not too close to any other Wright families. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Surry Co, NC pg 70 Daniel Wright 0210001000000-1010001000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 40-49 (1790-1800) Daniel S. For the 1850 census, Daniel and wife were residing with their married daughter Alsey Deborah Wright Golden and her husband. Some of their other children were nearby. Daniel and Patience's ages were off on the 1850 census.

Media Ann Wright was born ca 1815/16 in Surry Co, NC, presumably in the Mitchell River area. I have no direct proof that she is a child of Daniel S. Wright, but she may belong there. However, Daniel had no daughter this age with him in 1830 or 1840 census. I was given this name by another researcher as a child of Daniel, but I don't know what proof there is, nor do I know what proof there is of her maiden name being Wright. Media married Algias Golden ca 1840 in Surry Co, NC. They were listed on the 1850 just a few houses from Daniel Wright. Median Franklin age 64 was residing with them. She may be an Aunt or other relative. She was probably Media Ann Wright's namesake.

Richard Murphy Wright was born 27 Apr 1818 in Surry Co, NC, presumably in the Mitchell River area. I have no direct proof that he is a son of Daniel S. Wright, but plenty of circumstantial evidence supports it. First of all he was named "Richard Murphy Wright". Richard Murphy was Mary Murphy Wright's father, so this makes sense for Daniel to name a son after his own grandfather. Thanks to Bobbie Pierce for most of the birth and death dates and lots of other information that I have on this family. On 7 Mar 1835 Ambrose King deeded something to Richard M. Wright in Surry Co, NC. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book V page 143). On 27 Mar 1835 Richard M. Wright made a deed to Thomas B. Wright, William Carter and Jacob Tucker as securities to Ambrose King. I need to check this deed again, but I think it was a Mortgage deed. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book V page 130). Richard M. Wright was listed on the 1835 Surry tax list. He was listed with 1 white poll and 340 acres on Arrarat (River) bordering John Martin. On 29 Jul 1837 Richard obtained a marriage bond to marry Susan Bauguess. Thomas Steel was the bondsman. For some reason the name "James G. Wright" is listed in place of Richard's name, but this marriage bond is definitely for Richard. I didn't find Richard M. Wright on the 1840 census, but he was apparently still living there at that time. He may have been residing with someone else (perhaps his wife's parents?) or perhaps he was just missed by the census taker. Richard and family were on the 1850 census in Surry County, not too many households from his parents. Frank and Rachel Diseon, an elderly black couple were residing with them. I'm not sure who they were yet.

Alsey Deborah Wright was born ca 1827/28 in Surry Co, NC, presumably in the Mitchells River area. She married Abner Golden on or shortly after 21 Jul 1849 (date of marriage bond) in Surry Co, NC. I don't have any direct proof that she is a child of Daniel S. Wright, but it seems the only logical choice based on proximity and other bits of circumstantial evidence. They were listed on the 1850 census in Surry Co, NC. Her parents and several siblings were residing with them. Elizabeth Golden age 73, possibly Abner's mother, was also with them. For

On 22 Nov 1851 Daniel obtained a marriage bond in Surry Co, NC to marry Lydia Golden or "Gorden" (published version says "Gorden"). Bondsman was Joseph "Gorden". The name "Golden" and "Gorden" are both valid names for Surry County, so I don't really know which is correct. I searched all the Golden, Golding and Gorden (and other spelling) listings for 1850 Surry and didn't find a Joseph nor a Lydia listed, so I don't know anything else about her family. I list her as a Golden mainly because we already know the Golden family had intermarried with the Wrights. By the 1860 census, Daniel Wright and family had moved to neighboring Wilkes County and were listed there near his father who had moved there probably at the same time.

Wright served on the Confederate side. He enlisted on 17 Mar 1862 at age 33 in Company H, 54th Regiment, NC Troops. He listed himself as being of Surry Co, NC, but enlisted in Yadkin County. Records show he was captured at Rappahannock Station, VA on 7 Nov 1863. He was confined at Point Lookout, Maryland 11 Nov 1863, and paroled there on 16 Mar 1864. He was exchanged at City Point, VA 20 Mar 1864. After that he returned to duty and was present on the rolls until the Sep/Oct 1864 timeframe. Daniel's brother James Wright was in the same company, and they were imprisoned together at Point Lookout. Daniel moved to Texas sometime after the Civil War. I haven't followed up on that yet.
Zedock R. Wright was born 4 May 1829 in Surry Co, NC, presumably in the Mitchells River area. He was very likely named for his Uncle Zadock Wright, who in turn was named for his Uncle Zadock Riggs. The "R" in Zedock R. Wright may be for "Riggs". For the 1850 census, Zedock was residing with the Jonathan Golden family. I don't know how they are related, but Jonathan could be a brother to Algias and Abner Golden who married Zedock's sisters.

Phebe's parents were Thomas Bryan and Nancy Bauguess. They were in Wilkes Co, NC for the 1850 census. Zadock (or Zedock) and family were on the 1860 census in Surry Co, NC, next door to his brother James Wright, and not too far from their brother Richard M. Wright.

On 19 Jan 1853, James Wright obtained a marriage bond in Surry Co, NC to marry Elizabeth Moody. Cicero Williams was the bondsman. I don't know how, or if, Cicero Williams is related to either family. Elizabeth Moody is also a relative of mine. She is a child of John R. Moody and Sarah C. Snow. James Wright was listed on the 1860 census in Surry Co, NC, next door to his brother Zedock Wright.

He returned to duty in the March/April 1863 timeframe. He was wounded in the Abdomen near Fredericksburg, VA on 4 May 1863. He was hospitalized at Richmond, VA. He was given a 30 day furlough on 4 Jun 1863. He deserted on 1 Aug 1863. He returned to duty 30 Aug 1863. He was captured at Rappahannock Station, VA on 7 Nov 1863 (so was his brother Daniel). They were confined at Point Lookout, MD 11 Nov 1863. Then they were paroled at the same place on Feb 24, 1865. He was received at Aikens Landing, James River, VA in the 25 Feb through 3 Mar 1865 timeframe for exchange.
Minnie Z. Wright was born 24 Sep 1837 in Surry Co, NC, presumably in the Mitchells River area. She was presumably named after her Aunt Minnie Wright. I don't know what the "Z" might stand for. Minnie was home with her parents and several siblings for the 1850 census. On 13 Jan 1860 Thomas B. Moody obtained a marriage bond in Surry Co, NC to marry "M.Z. Wright". There was no bondsman listed. Thomas was also a relative of mine. He was a son of Pleasant B. Moody and Elizabeth Snow. They were listed on the 1860 census in Surry in the same vicinity with several of their siblings.
