Richard Murphy Wright was born January 1849 in Georgia, presumably in Union County, GA where his grandmother Mary Murphy Wright was living at the time. I can only imagine that Richard's parents were visiting her when he was born. In any event, Richard is the only child in this family born in GA. Richard is a son of James S. Wright and Caroline Winfrey. He was home with his parents for the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census in Cherokee Co, NC. They lived in the Rhodo community (Valleytown Township, between Andrews and Topton). Richard was undoubtedly named after his great grandfather Richard Murphy, though perhaps more directly named after his uncle Richard Wright (c1801), who's middle name might also have been Murphy (it seems all the Richard's in this family were named "Richard Murphy"). Richard Murphy Wright (1849) was known as "Dick Wright". On 27 Nov 1870, Richard Wright went to neighboring Macon County to marry Mariah M. C. Stillwell. They probably married at her father's house. She is a daughter of William H. Stillwell and Mariah Welch. They lived in the section of Macon County that became Swain County in 1871. I don't know if Richard and wife ever lived in Cherokee Co, NC together, for it seems they remained in Swain County. Richard Wright and family were listed on the 1880 census in Swain Co, NC in Nantahala Township, three houses from his sister Ivalee Wright Burchfield. They lived off the west side of the Nantahala River, near the Wesser community, though back a mile or two from what is now the main road.

He was listed as a "cousin" to Richard Wright. For years this troubled me, for I could not place him in the family at all. I thought he was probably related to Mariah, instead of Richard. A few years ago I finally solved the mystery. He is a son of John B. Black and Kissiah Crummell. Kissiah was Richard's 1st cousin, she was a daughter of Rebecca Wright and William Crummell. Rebecca was a daughter of Aaron Wright and Mary Murphy, and therefore a sister to Richard's father James S. Wright. That makes Allen Black and Richard M. Wright 1st cousins once removed. His full name is Zadock Allen Black. Richard and family were still in Swain Co, NC for the 1900 census, still in Nantahala Township, just four houses from Mariah's widowed father.

ChildrenRichard Wright and Mariah Stillwell had 11 children, proven by the various census records, and by birth and death records.
Nancy Callie Wright was born August 1870 in Macon County (now Swain County), NC. She was home with her parents for the 1880 census. She married Doctor F. Mahaffey on 20 Dec 1887 in Swain Co, NC. The marriage record listed her as a daughter of "R.M. and M.C. Wright". They were listed in Swain Co, NC for the 1900 census. I don' t have it typed up yet. I haven't found them in 1910 or later.
William A. Wright was born ca 1872/73 in Swain Co, NC. He was home with his parents for the 1880 census. William married Dixie Everett on 23 Jun 1895 in Swain Co, NC. The marriage record listed him as a child of "R.M. and M.C. Wright". I didn't find William and Dixie on the 1900 census, at least not in Swain County. I'm not sure where they went.
Margaret J. Wright was born April 1876 in Swain Co, NC. She was home with her parents for the 1880 census. Margaret married Charles E. Byrd on 19 Jul 1896. The marriage record listed her as a daughter of "R.M. and Mariah Wright". Margaret and Charles were in Swain Co, NC for the 1900 census.

James S. Wright was born 9 Apr 1877 in Swain Co, NC. He was home with his parents for the 1880 census. James S. Wright married Ida Elizabeth Maynor on 19 Dec 1897 in Graham Co, NC. For some reason, his name was listed as "R.M. Wright" on the marriage register. Just as confusing as his name on the marriage register is his 1900 census entry. For some reason he was listed as "John" Wright for this one. They were in Graham County, NC in Stecoah Township. They lived in the Panther Creek area.

James S. Wright died on 7 Jun 1952 and is buried at the Panther Creek Cemetery in Graham County. Ida died 11 Mar 1970 and is buried at the same place. At least two of their children are buried at the same cemetery.
Richard W. Wright was born January 1879 in Swain County, NC. He was home with his parents for the 1880 census. In 1900, he was still in Swain County, but living as a boarder in another household. I have no record of him after that.
Thomas Patton Wright was born 28 Jan 1881 in Swain Co, NC (birth date from Delayed Birth Certificate). He was home with his parents for the 1900 census. Thomas married Martha J. Hogue on 25 Dec 1902 in Swain Co, NC. For the 1910 census, Thomas was listed in Swain Co, NC just a few houses from his parents.

I don't have them on the 1910 census, but they had a child born in 1910 and another in 1913 both in Swain County (per the Delayed Birth Certificates). Alice was born ca 1886/87 (per 1920 census), presumably in Swain County. I don't know who her parents were. They were listed on the 1920 census in Swain County, next door to his parents.

Leander A. Wright was born 23 Jan 1892 in Swain Co, NC, in the Almond community (date and place per his Delayed Birth Certificate). Leander was home with his parents for the 1900 and 1910 census. Leander married Fannie --- sometime between 1910 and ca 1918, presumably in Swain County. She was born ca 1897/98. I don't know her maiden name. They were listed on the 1920 census in Swain County. He was listed as a Brakeman for the Railroad.
