Revision History:

·        22 Apr 2008 - Created by Marty Grant, a 4th Great grand nephew of James Floyd.

James L. Floyd was born 16 Jun 1800 according to his tombstone (Floyd Cemetery, Horry Co., SC). He is a proven son of James Floyd and Elizabeth Lewis as named in the estate records for his parents. Due to he and his father having the same name, the younger James was often listed as James “Jr.” on records, but not always.

James seems to be home with his parents for the 1800 census, aged under 10 (born 1790/1800), though perhaps he wasn’t actually born yet when the census taker came around that year. He appears to be home with his parents for the 1810 census, aged 10-15 (ca 1794/1800).

James L. Floyd married Edith (---) before 1820, presumably in Horry Dist., SC. She was born ca 1798/99 per her age on the 1850 census (51).

They are listed on the 1820 census in Horry, listed as James “Junior” to distinguish himself from his father. Another James Floyd (son of Frederick) is also listed, but he is noted as being Frederick’s son.

1820 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

1 Female(s) 16-25 (1794-1804) Edith (—) Floyd (c1799) wife
1 Female(s) 0-9 (1810-1820) Daughter? (1810/20) à gone by 1830

They are listed on the 1830 census in Horry, in fact there are two James Floyds listed (one being the son of Frederick), the other being this one.  The enumerations are very similar so it isn’t immediately clear which James is which, however I think I have them properly sorted out. To be certain, I’ll include both listings below, James, son of James (Sr) listed second.

James Floyd is listed on the 1845-1846 Horry District tax list and taxed for 3,012 acres and 10 slaves. (Horry County Historical Society)

They are listed on the 1850 census in Horry.

I was unable to find James Floyd on the 1860 census. He was still alive, but apparently missed by the census taker or by me, though I looked several times.

He was “back” in Horry for the 1870 census, listed in Green Sea Township. His wife Edith had apparently died before this time for he was now married to Elizabeth (---), born ca 1824/25. The census entry in brief: James Floyd 70, Elizabeth 45, Martha J. 15, Robert 17.

In 1880 they were listed in Floyds Township: James Floyd 79, born SC, father born NC, mother born NC; Elizabeth 55 wife, born SC-SC-SC, Jane Mincy 13 orphan, Louisa Edwards 13 orphan.

I don’t know if the two orphaned children with them are related or not.

James L. Floyd died on 15 Mar 1885 and is buried at Floyd Cemetery (probably named for him) in Horry Co., SC.

I don’t know when Elizabeth (---) Floyd died.

Children of James Floyd and Edith and Elizabeth. The 1850 census shows 11 children for James and Edith. The 1820, 1830 and 1840 census show a few others who were no longer home by 1850. The 1870 census shows two younger children who may be from James’ second marriage or perhaps from the first. The 1880 census shows two orphans living with James and Elizabeth. They could have been adopted (unofficially), but I don’t know if they are also physically related or not. Excluding the two orphans, James seems to have 17 children.

17.  Martha J. Floyd (c1855)

18.  Jane Mincy (c1867)

19.  Louisa Edwards (c1867)

Unknown Daughter (1810/20). James Floyd had an apparent daughter this age with him on the 1820 census (aged under 10). She was gone by 1830 so perhaps dead or married by then.

Unknown Son (1820/25). James Floyd had an apparent son this age with him for the 1830 census (aged 5-9), and still with him in 1840 (aged 15-19), but gone by 1850. I don’t know who this son is. This could be John R. Floyd (c1824). He fits, but I have no real evidence that he belongs in this family. He was a next door neighbor to Avery Floyd in 1880. That doesn’t prove they are brothers though.

Unknown Son (1820/25). James Floyd had an apparent son this age with him for the 1830 census (aged 5-9), and probably still with him in 1840 (aged 10-14), but gone by 1850. I don’t know who this son is.

Kisiah Floyd was born ca 1821/22 per her age on the 1850 census. She seems to be home in 1830 age 5-9 (1820/25) and still home in 1840 age 15-19 (1820/25), and home in 1850 (“Kesore” age 28).

I don’t know who she married or what happened to her after 1850.

Hambrick Floyd was born ca 1825/26 per his age on the 1850 census. He seems to be home with his parents for the 1830 census, aged under 5 (1825/30), and still home in 1840, aged 10-14 (1825/30), and home in 1850 (“Hambick” age 24).

I wasn’t able to find him in 1860 or 1870.

Nancy Floyd  was born 17 Dec 1827 (per obituary). She seems to be home with her parents for the 1830 census, aged under 5 (1825/30), and still home in 1840, aged 10-14 (1825/30), and home in 1850 (“Nancy” age 19), which is off by a few years.

Nancy married Henry C. Elliott before ca 1858. He was born June 1831, a son of Aaron Elliott (c1802) and Jane (---). Aaron is a son of Henry Elliott (ca 1753-aft 1850) and Mary (c1772-aft 1850).

Henry and family are listed on the 1860 census in Horry: Henry Elliott 30, Nancy 32, Elvina M. 2, Nathan Mc. 1, Vincent 1/12.

They are on the 1870 census in Horry in Floyds township: Henry Elliott 38, Nancy 40, Elvina 13, Magnola 11, Shadius 9 (male), Marshal 7, Domas A. 6 (male), Idia M. 4 (female), Mock D.? 3 (male).

They are still in Floyds for the 1880 census: Henry C. Elliott 49, Farmer, SC-SC-SC, Nancy 52 wife, Martillie 21 daughter, Maggie 20 daughter, Thaddeus 19 son, Marshall 17 son Damasca 16 son, Ida M. 13 daughter, Mock De? 9 son, Berry Cook 32, laborer, works on the farm.

They are in Floyds for the 1900 census: Henry C. Elliott, Head, born June 1831, age 68, married 45 years, born SC, father born NC, mother born NC, Farmer; Nancy, wife Dec 1828, 71, 8 children born, 5 living, born SC-SC-SC; Berry Cook, Boarder, Feb 1840, 60, Farmer; Hardy, grandson Mar 1889, 11, At school.

Henry C. Elliott died on 27 Aug 1907 (per his wife’s obituary). He is probably buried at Spring Hill Cemetery just as she is.

Nancy Floyd Elliott died on 3 Mar 1910 at Floyds according to her obituary (from the Horry County Historical Society website). She is buried at Spring Hill Cemetery. Her obit lists her survivors as brother Avery Floyd, sister Avey Batton, and sons: T. V., C. M. and H. D. Elliott, and daughters Mrs. P. B. Norton and Mrs. M. D. Souls.

William P. Floyd was born ca 1828/29 per his age on the 1850 census. He was seemingly home with his parents for the 1830 census, aged under 5 (1825/30), and home in 1840, aged 10-14 (1825/30), and home in 1850 (“William P.” age 21).

William married Margaret C. (---) before ca 1853. She was born ca 1828/29 also. I don’t know her maiden name.

They are listed on the 1860 census in Horry.

William P. Floyd died in the 1860’s, perhaps due to the Civil War. His widow and children are listed on the 1870 census in Horry in Floyds township: Margaret Floyd 39, Farmer, Medora A. 15, Eliza D. 13, Chatherine 11.

They are on the 1880 census in Floyds also: Margaret C. Floyd 50, widowed, Farmer, born SC-SC-SC, Catherine A. 17 daughter.

I didn’t find Margaret on the 1900 census in Horry County.

Colin Floyd was born ca 1831/32 per his age on the 1850 census. He seems to be home with his parents for the 1840 census, aged 5-9 (1830/35), and was home in 1850 (“Colin” age 18). I have no record of him after 1850.
Ervin Floyd was born ca 1832/33 per his age on the 1850 census. He seems to be home with his parents for the 1840 census, aged 5-9 (1830/35), and was home in 1850 (“Ervin” age 17). I have no record of him after 1850.
Kenneth Floyd was born ca 1834/35 per his age on the 1850 census. He seems to be home with his parents for the 1840 census, aged 5-9 (1830/35), and was home in 1850 (“Keneth” age 15). I have no record of him after 1850.

It is possible that Kenneth is the same person as Avery Floyd who wasn’t listed with the family in 1850 but is a proven son of James, and Avery was born in 1835 according to his 1900 census entry, so the ages match. It is also possible that Pleasant Floyd (see below) is the same as Avery instead, for their ages are close also.

I did find a “Kenith” Floyd age 37 (c1833 SC) on the 1870 census in Claiborne Co., MS with wife and others living with him. This could be the same Kenneth, but I don’t know for sure. That Kenneth was still in the same county for the 1880 census as well.

Avery Floyd was born April 1835 (per 1900 census). The obituary of Nancy Floyd Elliott (see above) lists them as siblings, so that proves he is a son of James Floyd also. However, Avery was not listed with the family in 1850 unless he is the same person as either Kenneth Floyd or Pleasant Floyd. Unfortunately none of the records I’ve seen for Avery include a middle initial, so that doesn’t help to figure if he is perhaps Avery Pleasant Floyd  or Avery Kenneth Floyd. More research may resolve this.

Avery was not listed anywhere on the 1850 census (unless he is one of the two I mentioned above). He was also not listed in 1860, but then again neither was his parents or most of his siblings.

Avery Floyd married Penny O. (---) before ca 1865. She was born 3 Oct 1839 (per tombstone). I don’t know her maiden name.

They are listed on the 1870 census in Horry County in Green Sea township, three houses from his father: Avery Floyd 33, Penny 30, Wilburn L. 4, Lola V. 2, Susan Henderson 13, Nancy Henderson 8.

I don’t know who the Henderson children are, or how they are related.

The Floyds are on the 1880 census in Horry in Floyds township next door to John R. Floyd (c1824), relationship unknown, perhaps brothers: Avery Floyd 43, Farmer, born SC-SC-SC, Pennie O., 40 wife, NC-NC-NC, Wilber L., 14 son SC-SC-NC, Lola V. 12 daughter, Edith R. 9 daughter, Sallie B. 6 daughter, Elizabeth J. 4 daughter, Avery C. W. 2 son, Victoria Henderson 17 servant, works on the farm.

They are on the 1900 census, still in Floyds township: Avery Floyd, born Apr 1835, age 65, married 33 years, born SC-SC-SC, Farmer; Pennie O., wife Nov 1837 62, 7 children born, 7 living NC-NC-NC; Sallie B. daughter Jan 1875, 25, School Teacher; Walker, boarder, Dec 1877 22, Farmer.

They are on the 1910 census in Floyds: Avery Floyd, Head, 73 1st marriage, 45 years, SC-SC-NC, Farmer, Pennie O. wife 70, 1st marriage, 45 years, NC-NC-NC; Elizabeth J. DuBose, daughter, 33, 1st marriage 13 years, 3 children born 2 living; Clarence F. son-in-law 38, 1st marriage 13 years; Eunice A., granddaughter 12, Frank, grandson 7/12; Sallie Williams, niece, 27 single.

They are still in Floyds for the 1920 census: Avery Floyd, 83 married, Penny O., wife 80.

Avery Floyd died on 27 Jan 1922 in Horry (per SC Death Records). He may be buried at the Floyd Cemetery, but I found no marker for him.

Penny O. (---) Floyd died in 1929 according to her tombstone at the Floyd Cemetery.

Pleasant Floyd was born ca 1835/36 per his age on the 1850 census. He seems to be home with his parents for the 1840 census, aged 5-9 (1830/35), and was home in 1850 (“Pleasant” age 14). I have no record of him after 1850.

It is possible that Pleasant is the same person as Avery Floyd who wasn’t listed with the family in 1850 but is a proven son of James, and Avery was born in 1835 according to his 1900 census entry, so the age is close. It is also possible that Kenneth Floyd (see above  is the same as Avery instead, for their ages are close also.

Hugh J. Floyd was born ca 1837/38 per his age on the 1850 census. He seems to be home with his parents for the 1840 census, aged under 5 (1835/40), and was home in 1850 (“Huey J” age 12). I have no record of him after 1850.

It appears that Hugh and Avi (see below) were twins for they were both 12 as of the 1850 census. However her birth date from her tombstone is 28 Sep 1836 which would make her 13, not 12, in June 1850 when the census was taken. Therefore they may not be twins after all.

Avi J. Floyd was born 28 Sep 1836 per her tombstone. She seems to be home with her parents for the 1840 census, aged under 5 (1835/40), and was home in 1850 (“A. J.” age 12).

Avi J. Floyd married Thomas H. Batten sometime after 1850 and before 1875. He was born ca 1837/38 (per his age on the 1880 census), born in NC somewhere. I found a Thomas Batten on the 1850 census in New Hanover Co., NC with Martha Batten (c1785). He was 14 (born ca 1836) which is pretty close. I didn’t find that Thomas in 1860, but I found Martha Batten in Columbus Co., NC that year with a Bell and Freshwater family.

I have not been able to Thomas and Avi on the 1860 or 1870 census. However in 1880 they were in Carroll Co., AR in Eureka Springs township: Thomas H. Batten, 42, married, Carpenter, born NC-VA-VA; Avie 42 wife, keeping house, born SC-SC-SC; Thomas H. 5 son, born TN-NC-SC.

I was unable to find them in 1900, 1910 or 1920 either.

Avi J. Floyd Batten died in Horry Co., SC on 27 Feb 1923 according to her tombstone and the SC death index. She is buried at the Floyd Cemetery. Her son Thomas H. Batten (Jr) is also buried there. I didn’t find when or where her husband died.

Giles Floyd was born ca 1839/40 per his age on the 1850 census. He seems to be home with his parents for the 1840 census, aged under 5 (1835/40), and he is home in 1850 (“Giles” age 10). I have no record of him after that.
Robert Floyd was born ca 1852/53 per his age on the 1850 census. He was with his parents for the 1870 census. I have no record of him after that.
Martha J. Floyd was born ca 1854/55 per her age on the 1850 census. She was with her parents for the 1870 census. I have no record of her after that.
Jane Mincey was born ca 1866/67 per her age on the 1880 census. On that census she was listed as an orphan and living with James Floyd. I have no record of her after 1880.

I attempted to find Jane on the 1870 census to determine her parents, but wasn’t able to locate her.

Louisa Edwards was born ca 1866/67 per her age on the 1880 census. On that census she was listed as an orphan and living with James Floyd. I have no record of her after 1880.

I attempted to find Louisa on the 1870 census to determine her parents, but wasn’t able to locate her. I am an Edwards descendant myself and my ancestors lived in Horry County, but I don’t know how this Louisa ties into them or any other Edwards families. (See my Edwards pages for more on them.)
