I (Marty Grant) don't know how I'm related to Daniel Jenkins, but I'm sure he is somehow closely related to my ancestor Osborne Jenkins (c1803).

Daniel Jenkins was born ca 1755/70, presumably in Onslow County, North Carolina. I base his birth date on two things: the 1800 census which gives his age as 26-44 (born ca 1755/74), and his first public record dated 1791, so if he should have been 21 or older then, so born ca 1770 or before. The two factors combine to an approximate birth of ca 1755/70.  (He appeared as a grantee on a deed dated 1789, but there was no minimum age to receive land, only to sell it, so I can't use the 1789 deed to help calculate his birth date).

Daniel Jenkins is probably a son of Jonathan Jenkins (1741) and Ellender ---. Daniel was associated with Jonathan and was the guardian of one of Jonathan's orphaned children. That does not prove he was his son, but it strongly suggests that it is the case. Jonathan did leave a will and mentioned "children" but did not name any of them. Daniel did have a proven brother named Elisha Jenkins as named in Daniel's own Will.

Daniel did not appear on the 1786 state census in Onslow County, so he was probably living with other relatives. His father had died in 1783, and his mother Ellender was not listed on the census either. She could have been dead, or residing with a married child that year.

In 1789 (no exact date given), Arthur Averitt deeded land to Daniel Jenkins that formerly belonged to Jonathan Jenkins. Witnesses were Jesse Webb and John Averitt. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book P page 37, from Records of Onslow County, North Carolina, Vol I by Zae Harget Gwynn, and all subsequent deeds cited on this page are from this book or Vol II).

Daniel Jenkins was not listed on the 1790 census either. He may have been living with other relatives, or he could have just been missed as it seems like several Jenkins were "missing" in 1790 who should be listed in Onslow that year.

On 17 Dec 1791, Daniel Jenkins sold 100 acres to Joseph Ballard. The land was on Mill Creek. Witnesses were Jonathan Wilder and Jonathan Murray. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book R page 7).

On 11 May 1792, Daniel Jenkins and John Grifton witnessed a deed from Daniel Thompson to William Pollock. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book R page 40).

Sometime in the 1790's, Daniel Jenkins married Sarah ---. I believe her maiden name is Waltom, but let me explain. First of all, after Daniel's death in 1807, Sarah appeared on a few deeds including one dated 1809 where Amos Waltom deeded some land to Sarah Jenkins, and mentioned something about it being divided equally between himself "and my sister". I'm not sure if he is saying that Sarah was his sister or not, but that is the way I read it. If so, then she is "Sarah Waltom". I don't know who her parents were. She was born ca 1755/74 (per 1800 census).

It also appears that Sarah had been married prior to her marriage to Daniel Jenkins, for in Daniel's Will (1804) he names his "step-daughter" Ann Hadnot. This could mean that Sarah Waltom had been previously married to a Mr. Hadnot.

On 12 Apr 1796, Daniel Jenkins, Nathaniel Loomis, and John Gibson made a Guardian Bond for Daniel to be guardian to Elen Jenkins (also listed as Helen Jenkins), minor orphan. This was in the Loose Estate records for Jonathan Jenkins, so this young girl was probably Daniel's sister. (Onslow County Loose Estates - Jonathan Jenkins - 1785, North Carolina Archives).

On 2 Aug 1799, Daniel Jenkins sold Richard Averitt a Negro. Witnesses were James Hadnot and Nancy Grissom. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book U page 74).

Daniel Jenkins was listed on the 1800 census just two houses from David Jenkins (1765/74). Their part of the census page was very faded, and both names looked the same, but after careful analysis, I'm sure I've properly sorted them out. Daniel's household had three daughters who seem to pre-date his marriage, so I'd bet they are Sarah's from her previous marriage, or else they are other relatives or just boarders. Another male the same age as Daniel was also listed, and that could be his brother Elisha Jenkins.

On 21 Jan 1801, Daniel Jenkins and --- Ellis witnessed a deed from James James to Henry Mashborne. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book V page 41).

On 3 Aug 1802, Daniel Jenkins and Isaac Jarrott witnessed a deed from El Ellis to Elon Jenkins (his sister?). (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book 4 page 11).

On 10 Dec 1803, Daniel Jenkins and James Doty witnessed a deed from Titus Farr to his brother George Farr. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book X page 2).

On 7 Mar 1804 Daniel Jenkins made his Will in Onslow County. He named his wife Sarah, his son John, brother Elisha Jenkins, and Step-Daughter Ann Hadnot. He named his wife Sarah Executor. Witnesses were John Johnston and Ann Hadnot. The Will was proven in December 1807, so he had died by then. (Onslow Co, NC Will Book A page 65).

On 30 May 1808 Sarah Jenkins and Nancy Ward witnessed a deed from John Sparkman to Chainey Sparkman. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book 2 page 65).

On 13 Nov 1808 Nathaniel Averitt and wife Polly deeded 390 acres to Sarah Jenkins. The land was described as being on Fulford's line and Larkin's line. Witnesses were George Shepard and John Johnston. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book 2 page 93).

In April 1809, Amos Waltom deeded 399 acres to Sarah Jenkins, "which is equal between my sister and myself and I am fully paid for my part". This deed seems to show that Amos Walton and Sarah Jenkins were brother and sister. Witnessed by Nathaniel Averitt. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book 2 page 80).

I did not find Sarah listed on the 1810 census. She may have been living with other relatives.

Sarah Jenkins made her Will on 11 May 1817 in Onslow County. She named her grand daughter Sarah Ward, grandson James Mills and grandson George Ward, and her son-in-law Thomas Mills. (These were probably all from her first marriage to Mr. Hadnot). Thomas Mills was named Executor. Witnesses were Lamb Hardison and Lewis Mills. (Onslow Co, NC Will Book A page 64).

Sarah was dead by 20 Jun 1817, for on that date an Inventory of her estate was made by Thomas Mills, Executor. (Onslow County Loose Estates - Sarah Jenkins - 1817, North Carolina Archives).

Children

Daniel Jenkins and wife Sarah apparently had only one child together: John Jenkins. Sarah had several children from a previous marriage, but I have not traced any of them yet.

John Jenkins (1790/1800)

John Jenkins was probably born ca 1790/1800. Daniel Jenkins named his son "John Jenkins" in his 1804 Will. On the 1800 census he only had one male child with him, and he was aged "under 10", or born ca 1790/1800, so presumably this was John.

I've not found any other record for this John Jenkins.
