I (Marty Grant) am a 5th Great Grandson of John Moody and Mary (Roberts?).
John Moody was born ca 1765/1784 (per 1810 census). I have not found enough records yet to narrow down his birth year any closer than this.
I don’t know where John was born, though he lived in Surry County later on. All four of his known children were still living in 1880,and on that census the birth place of the father was listed. John’s two daughters (Ara and Eliza, who were living together that year) listed North Carolina as his birth place. Son Pleasant Moody listed Connecticut as his father’s birth place. Son John listed North Carolina. That is three North Carolina’s to one Connecticut. I don’t know which is more accurate, but for some reason I don’t want to discard Pleasant’s entry, even though it is in the minority. There is some reason he (or whomever gave the information) thought his father was born in Connecticut.
I don’t know who John Moody’s parents were. I’ve found no good clues so far. One possibility is Thomas Moody (1755/74) who was listed on the 1800 census in Surry County. He had several kids, including a son born ca 1774/84, which would fit within John’s approximate birth range. At this point, Thomas is my only suspect, but I have no solid evidence linking him to John yet other than them being in the same county.
There were no Moody’s listed on the 1784-1787 State census in either Wilkes or Surry County, North Carolina. John probably would have been listed with his parents in the "under 21" age group, though we have none in the area. This means he was probably somewhere else in that time period.
In 1790, there were still no Moody’s in Surry or Wilkes County.
In 1800, Thomas Moody was listed in Surry County. He had a large family, including (as mentioned before) an apparent son who could be John Moody. There were several Moody’s in neighboring Stokes County, including two other Thomas Moodys, and a Nathaniel Moody. I mention them because I find some of them listed in Surry County records later on. They may all be related to John Moody in some way.
By ca 1803, John Moody was somewhere in Georgia. I believe he was Franklin County where many Surry County families had moved (though I don’t know if he moved there from Surry or not).
He married Mary "Polly" — before ca 1803 in Georgia, probably Franklin County.
Mary was born ca 1780/84 either in North Carolina (per 3 of her children’s 1880 census entries) or in Georgia (per son Pleasant’s 1880 census entry).
I have not found any direct evidence of Mary’s maiden name, but Jim Cockerham and Wade Roberts have suggested that she may be a Roberts, and a daughter of Olive Branch Roberts and Sarah Woodson. There is no solid evidence to support this, but the circumstantial evidence is interesting, primarily that the Moody family was neighbors with the Roberts and that many of the Moody children seemed to be named for members of the Roberts family. For example, both her sons are named for Roberts: John Roberts Moody, and Pleasant Branch Moody (probably named for Pleasant Branch Roberts).
Mary’s probable father Olive Branch Roberts lived in Surry and Wilkes Co, NC (in the border region) and did move to Franklin Co, GA and also to Wilkes Co, GA in the 1790's, but later returned to Surry. I don’t know if the Moody family moved down to Georgia with the Roberts, or if they were already there. In either event, John and Mary married there before ca 1803. According to the birth places of their two oldest children (Arabella and John), they were in Georgia ca 1803, and still there ca 1806.
There are some records showing John Moody in Franklin Co, GA in 1808 (tax list) and also showing him in Surry Co, NC at that same time, or at least doing business in Surry at the time. It is possible he was moving back and forth pending a permanent move back to Surry.
On 23 Dec 1805, Henry Speer deeded property to John Moody in Surry County. I don’t have the details of this deed yet. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book M page 85).
On 27 May 1807, John Moody deeded property to Thomas Longino. I don’t have the details yet. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book M page 351).
John Moody was listed on an 1808 Franklin Co, GA tax list. I don’t know if it was personal property or real property. If Real, he may not have been living there in 1808, but still owned land. More research is needed in that county.
On 10 Sep 1808, John Moody was a witness in court for a case of Thomas Longino vs Abraham Stow. John proved 3 days and 84 miles attendance. (How long he had to be away from home, and how far he traveled, round trip). (From Surry County Court Minutes published by Surry County Genealogical Society in their Journal).
On 6 Mar 1809, apparently in the same case (Thomas Longino vs Abraham Stow), John Moody failed to appear as a witness for the plaintiff. "Scire Facias" was issued against him.

He was the only Moody listed in Surry that year. He was listed between James Graves and Robert L. B. Atkins. I’m not sure where he was living exactly, though I think he was North of the Yadkin River and in the western part of Surry near the Wilkes County line (or at least that is where his family was later on). John had an "extra" older male with him, who could be an older son, or a younger brother or other relative.

John Moody was brought to Court several times in 1810 and 1811. On 5 Sep 1810 by Nathan Chiffin (don’t know reason), on 5 Mar 1811 by Barrett L. Martin and also by Peter Clingman on same date.
On 3 Sep 1811 Barrett Martin brought a suit against John Moody for Assault. This also happens to be the very last record I’ve found for John Moody. I believe he died around this time, or at least between then and 1820.
Mary was listed as head of household on the 1820 census, apparently widowed, with her children still at home. She was the only Moody listed in Surry County that year. She was listed in Winfrey’s District, which would put her north of the Yadkin River, right in the Surry - Wilkes County border area. Unfortunately, the census was alphabetical, so I can’t tell who her neighbors were.

Mary was not listed on the 1830 census, however, someone her age (40-49, born ca 1780/90) was living with her son John Moody (Jr), and I suspect it was her.
In 1840, Mary (or someone her age) was living with John Moody, aged 50-59 (born ca 1780/90).
I did not find Mary Roberts Moody on the 1850 census, so I suspect she had died by then. I also did not find her unmarried daughter Eliza Moody, so it is possible Mary was still living in 1850, and they were together, but missed by the census taker, or living with another family and listed under the wrong surname by mistake. Mary (nor Eliza) was with John R. Moody’s family, nor Pleasant Moody’s family, nor with daughter Arabella Winfrey (who was in Cherokee County, NC by then).
Pending further evidence, I’ll conclude that Mary Roberts Moody died between 1840 and 1850, probably in Surry County, North Carolina, though it is possible she accompanied daughter Arabella to Cherokee Co, NC.
John Moody and Mary "Polly" Roberts had 4 children per the 1810 and 1820 census records. I have not found any definite source proving their children, but there seems no doubt that John, Pleasant, Ara and Eliza are their kids. They were all associated with each other, and they all fit the known children’s census ages from 1810 and 1820, and there is no other place they could go. Ara and Eliza are proven sisters to each other.
Arabella Moody was born ca 1802/03 (per 1860 census) either in Georgia (per 1850 and 1870 census) or in Surry County, North Carolina (per 1860 census and 1880 census lists "NC").
Arabella is not a proven child of John Moody, but her maiden name is proven to be "Moody" by two of her children’s death certificates, and John Moody’s family was neighbors to the Winfreys (whom she married) in Surry County.
Ara seems to be home with her parents for the 1810 census ("under 10" born ca 1800/10) and with her widowed mother in 1820 (age 10-15, born ca 1804/10).
Ara married Caleb Winfrey ca 1820-1821 in Surry Co, NC. They remained in Surry County until the 1840's when they moved to Cherokee Co, NC and settled near Topton in Valleytown Township. See their own page for additional information.
John R. Moody was born ca 1805/06 (per 1850 census and 1880 census) either in Georgia (per 1860 and 1870 census) or in North Carolina (per 1850 and 1880 census).
John’s middle initial is thought to stand for "Roberts". I don’t know if there is any documentary sources for this though. If so, he was probably named for his uncle John Roberts.
John is not a proven son of John Moody, but there seems no doubt that he is John’s son. John (Sr) did have an apparent son John Jr’s age, and they did live in the same area, and there were no other Moodys around that could be John Jr’s father.
John seems to be home with his parents for the 1810 census ("under 10" born ca 1800/10) and with his widowed mother in 1820 (age 10-15, born ca 1804/10).
On 2 Nov 1826, John Moody signed as bondsman for the marriage bond of William Oliver and Nancy East in Surry County. I don’t know if they are related in any way.
On 22 Dec 1826, John R. Moody signed as bondsman for the Surry County marriage bond of John Bryan an Nancey Thompson. I don’t know if they were related in some way.
In 1830, John was listed as head of household, and it appears that his widowed mother and brother Pleasant and sister Eliza were living with him.

On 7 Apr 1833, John R. Moody obtained a marriage bond in Surry County to marry Sarah Snow. James Jones was bondsman. Sarah C. Snow was born ca 1811/12. Other researchers have told me that she was a daughter of Fielding Snow and Sarah Fortner.
John Moody was listed on the 1835 Surry County tax list and taxed for 75 acres adjoining P. B. Roberts (his uncle).
John R. Moody was listed on the 1840 census in Surry County. The enumerations are off somewhat.

I’m not sure of the source, but I have "1883" as John R. Moody’s death date. I also show that Sarah Snow Moody died around the same time.
John and Sarah had eight children as proven by various census and other records.
Eliza Moody was born ca 1809/10 (per 1870 census) or ca 1805/06 (per 1880 census). She was born in Surry County, North Carolina.
Eliza is not a proven child of John Moody, but she is a proven sister to Arabella Moody Winfrey, and John Moody did have an apparent daughter her age.
Eliza seems to be home with her parents for the 1810 census ("under 10" born ca 1800/10) and with her widowed mother in 1820 (age 10-15, born ca 1804/10).
Eliza seems to be home with her brothers and mother for the 1830 census (age 20-29, born ca 1800/10).
For the 1840 census, Eliza seems to be with her sister Ara in Caleb Winfrey’s household, or at least they have an "extra" person her age with them, aged 30-39 (born ca 1800/10), so I’m reasonably sure it is her.
In the 1840's, Eliza’s sister Ara and her family moved to Cherokee County, North Carolina, and Eliza may have gone with them. She was certainly with them later on, but I don’t know when she went.
I have not been able to find Eliza Moody on the 1850 census. She was not living with her brothers Pleasant or John Moody in Surry County, nor was she with her sister Ara in Cherokee County. If she was living with her brothers, and alternated between them, they may have both failed to report her to the census taker, thinking the other one already did. I did find an Eliza Moody on the 1850 census in Cherokee County, but her age is wrong (28, or born ca 1822), and she was not living anywhere near her sister Arabella, in fact, many miles away.
I also could not find Eliza Moody on the 1860 census. She was not with brothers John or Pleasant in Surry County, nor with sister Ara in Cherokee County.
In 1870, Eliza finally appears on a census, living in Cherokee County with Isaac Winfrey, her nephew.

In 1880, Eliza was living in Cherokee County still, this time with her sister Arabella Moody Winfrey. She was listed as single, and was listed as Ara’s "sister".

I didn’t find Eliza on the 1900 census. I suspect she probably died shortly after 1880, and is probably buried at Red Marble Baptist Church Cemetery, in an unmarked grave.
Pleasant B. Moody was born ca 1809/10 (per 1850 census) in North Carolina.

On 3 Mar 1835, Pleasant B. Moody obtained a marriage bond in Surry County to marry Elizabeth Moody (sic), other records show that she was a Snow. F. B. Jones was bondsman. Elizabeth D. Snow was born ca 1802/03, and is a sister to Sarah Snow who married John R. Moody.
Pleasant Moody was listed on the 1835 Surry County tax list with 50 acres adjoining John Moody.
On 17 Dec 1838, Pleasant B. Moody sold land to Sanbourne W. Roberts and Pleasant B. Roberts. I don’t have the details of this deed yet.

Sometime in the 1860's, Pleasant and family moved into neighboring Wilkes County.

I’m not sure of the source, but I have "1884" as Pleasant Moody’s death date. According to Jim Cockerham, he is buried at the Moody Cemetery in Surry County. I don’t know when Elizabeth died.
Pleasant and Elizabeth had seven children as proven by various census and other records.
