Revision History:
  • 10 Dec 2009 - Added some details on Robert Patterson about his wife, where they were in 1840, etc.

  • 2 Dec 2009 through 7 Dec 2009- Added family details and documentation.

  • 30 Nov 2009 - New page by Marty Grant. This page is just a shell right now, I'll add details later on. In the meantime visit Wes Patterson's site for much more on this family.

The author (Marty Grant) is not related to John Patterson and Margaret Black as far as can be determined, but they and their children lived near my own Patterson ancestors over many years. DNA evidence suggests mine (Samuel Patterson-1805 et al) are not related to John and Margaret.

I must thank Jennie Vee Pitts (deceased), Juanita Nail, Kenneth Patterson (deceased), Wes Patterson, Don Patterson (deceased) and a few others who shared data with me on this family. Much of their research begins with an old document dated 1908 wherein Mary Patterson Fountain (1836-1911) dictated a fairly complete family record for John and Margaret's family. Mary was their great granddaughter and her life and theirs overlapped so she is a good witness. However there are still a few errors in her family record, but it is a very valuable document to have. Click here to view a copy of the original (shared by Juanita Nail). Note that it is over 7mb in size and in PDF format.

I would refer the reader to Wes Patterson's web pages for some fascinating details about John and his descendants and ancestors. I'd also recommend the reader join the PattersonGenealogyNC discussion group. It isn't strictly for this family, but many of the members are from the John and Margaret line and they are frequently discussed.

John Patterson was born ca 1760/70 per his age on the 1840 census (70-79). Combine this with his 1810 entry (aged over 45, or born before 1765) we can narrow it down to ca 1760/65. The birth date of 18 Mar 1766 has been floating around for years, but Wes Patterson has determined that belongs to a different John (John Peter Patterson).

John's birth place hasn't been determined for certain. He died before the 1850 census. His older children were born in SC and the rest in NC. His daughter Amy lived to be listed on the 1880 census where she listed her father's birth place as South Carolina. This can't be considered primary evidence for we don't know who told the census taker that, whether her or some other family member. However, there is no reason to doubt it for his wife was born in South Carolina as proven by the 1850 census.

Wes Patterson has determined that John is probably a son of Thomas Patterson, who was in turn a son of Robert (R) Patterson (always signed with an "R" for his mark). The Pattersons were probably of Scotch-Irish origin, living in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Augusta Co., VA; SC, NC and GA and other states later on. Refer to Wes's web pages for more on John's ancestors.

John Patterson married Margaret Black before ca 1789 somewhere in South Carolina. She was born ca 1766/67 per her age on the 1850 census (83). She and John were in their early 20's when they married. I don't know if there is any primary evidence of Margaret's maiden name, but the 1908 family record lists her as Margaret Black. The Pattersons and Blacks were associated in numerous ways so this is highly believable. Margaret is called "Peggy" on some records. Peggy is a common nickname for Margaret.

Where were John and family on the 1790 census? Their son Joseph was born ca 1789 in SC and their next known child was born in SC in 1793. That suggests they should be in SC for that census. There were 10 heads of household named John Patterson on the 1790 census for South Carolina. We can remove three of them right away since they had no young sons at home (Joseph would have been about one year old in 1790). That leaves seven families to look at. The family is supposed to have connections to Camden District, South Carolina so that is an important clue, though no guarantee they were still there in 1790.

Here is each John Patterson listed in South Carolina in 1790. The enumerations are males over 16; males under 16 (0-15); females all ages; other free persons and slaves.

District - County Page Head of Household Enumerations
Abbeville 453 Jno Patterson 1-0-1-0-0
Camden - Lancaster 232 Jno Patterson 1-2-2-0-0
Greenville 94 John Patterson 1-3-5-0-0
Newberry 78 John Patterson 1-1-5-0-0
Orangeburg 251 John Paterson 1-3-2-0-0
Orangeburg 419 John Patterson 2-0-1-0-0
Pendleton 8 John Patterson 1-1-1-0-0
Pendleton 9 John Patterson 1-2-6-0-0
Pendleton 10 John Patterson 1-4-5-0-0
York 188 John Paterson 1-0-1-0-1

As noted earlier, we can eliminate three families due to the lack of young males. John would have Joseph (c1789) at home who would be about one year old, so he should be in the under 16 age group. That removes the John in Abbeville, one of them in Orangeburg and the one in York. Here is the revised table with those removed:

District - County Page Head of Household Enumerations
Camden - Lancaster 232 Jno Patterson 1-2-2-0-0
Greenville 94 John Patterson 1-3-5-0-0
Newberry 78 John Patterson 1-1-5-0-0
Orangeburg 251 John Paterson 1-3-2-0-0
Pendleton 8 John Patterson 1-1-1-0-0
Pendleton 9 John Patterson 1-2-6-0-0
Pendleton 10 John Patterson 1-4-5-0-0

Census analysis alone won't tell us which of the above is this John Patterson, but it is a good place to start lacking other records. This John was on the 1800 census in Buncombe Co., NC with 1 male 26-44 (1755/74) (himself); one male 10-15 (c1784/90) (Joseph-1789); one male under 10 (c1790/1800) (John-c1798); one female 26-44 (1755/74) (Margaret-1766); three females under 10 (c1790/1800) and one slave. Using these enumerations for comparison that makes John of Pendleton (pg 8) the best match, but is that him? John of 1790 Pendleton is almost certainly John Patterson & Nancy Chapman instead, and there is no evidence John and Margaret ever lived in Pendleton.

It is interesting that of all the Johns of 1790 SC most of them were no longer in the same place as of 1800. This makes it very difficult to determine who was who. At this point I'll have to leave it a mystery as to where John and Margaret were in 1790. They could be the one in York even though there are no young sons at home. That John did have one slave in 1790 as John & Margaret did in 1800. That doesn't prove it though, but worth noting. It is also notable that Margaret was from York District and that there were several other Pattersons there in 1790 too, many of whom seem to be related to John & Margaret. That includes an Alexander, James, Peter and two Roberts in addition to the John who was there in 1790.

Regardless of where they were in 1790, by 1800 they were in Buncombe Co., NC. Unfortunately this census taker sorted his list alphabetically so we can't determine which of the several Pattersons lived near one another.

They were gone from North Carolina by 1830. Their son Joseph is in Rabun Co., GA in 1830 as are sons John (Jr) and George. There is a John Patterson in Habersham Co., GA who might be this John, but the enumerations aren't quite right. However it seems likely this is them, but there is the possibility it is someone else instead.

John Patterson died sometime between the 1840 census and 1850 census for Margaret was listed in the 1850 without him in Union Co., GA. She was listed twice in fact. First with son Joseph: # 333/333 Joseph Patterson 61 Farmer, SC; Agnes 55 SC; Solomon 24 Farmer GA; Mary 20; Elizabeth 18; Malissa 16; Sary Durham 84 VA; Margaret Patterson 83 SC; Ann, 47 NC. She was listed again with son John: # 454/454 John Patterson 52 Farmer $100, NC; Sarah 47 SC; Andrew 18 GA; Humphrey 15; John 11; George 8; Sarah 3; Lucinda Hix 45 SC; Margarett Patterson 83 SC.

Margaret Black Patterson died sometime between 1850 and 1860 for I wasn't able to find her anywhere on the 1860 census.

Children of John Patterson and Margaret Black. They had seven children as proven by the 1908 family record written by Mary Patterson (c1837-?) great grand-daughter of John and Margaret. She includes an eighth child Margaret (wife of Gravet Foster) who was actually a grandchild instead. Census analysis shows there were some other daughters as well, perhaps forgotten when Mary wrote her family record.

  1. Joseph Patterson (c1789)

  2. Unknown Daughter (1790/1800)

  3. Unknown Daughter (1790/1800)

  7. George Patterson (c1800)

  8. Ann Patterson (c1803)

  9. Amos Patterson (c1804)

  10. Unknown Son (c1825/30)

Joseph Patterson was born ca 1788/89 per his age on the 1850 census (61). He was born somewhere in South Carolina (per 1850 census). Joseph is a proven child of John and Margaret as named in the 1908 family record and is further proven by the fact Margaret was living with him in 1850.

Joseph seems to be with his parents for the 1800 census in Buncombe Co., NC aged 10-15 (ca 1784/90).

Joseph Patterson married Mary "Polly" Duncan (spelled Dunkin on 1908 family record) between 1800 and 1810, presumably in Buncombe Co., NC. Mary was born ca 1784/94 per her age on the 1810 census. I don't know who her parents were. There was a John Duncan on the 1800 census in Buncombe. He had one daughter with him then born ca 1784/90. This could be Mary, but more evidence is needed to be certain. There were no Duncan's listed in Buncombe in 1810.

Joseph Patterson is listed on the 1810 census in Buncombe next to Reuben Black (probably related) and next to James Patterson (1765/84) and near Robert Patterson (1765/84) and just four households from his own parents.

The family moved to Georgia in the 1820's. They were in Rabun in 1830, but may have lived in Hall awhile before that.

Mary Duncan Patterson died sometime around 1829 either in Hall or Rabun Co., GA.

On 25 Mar 1830 Joseph Patterson married Agnes Wilson in Hall Co., GA. They were married by Hugh Kerr, Justice of the Peace. Hall County is two counties south of Rabun. There was a large Patterson family there already who may or may not be related including a Joseph Patterson just one year younger than this one. See John Patterson and Nancy Chapman for more on the Hall County Pattersons. Agnes Wilson was born ca 1794/95 in South Carolina (both facts per 1850 census). I don't know who her parents were. The 1830 census for Hall County shows 21 Wilson households living there at that time. There were none in Rabun in 1830. (Note that the names "Agnes" and "Nancy" are often used interchangeably, one of many inexplicable common nicknames.)

There is a Joseph Patterson listed on the 1830 census in Hall Co., GA but that is the son of John and Nancy (mentioned above). This Joseph was back in Rabun for the 1830 census.

They were in neighboring Union Co., GA by 1834 and listed there on the state census that year. Joseph Patterson was listed with 8 males and 4 females in his household.

Joseph Patterson served as a 1st Corporal from 22 May 1838 to 14 Jul 1838 in Capt. Samuel Patterson's company of Mounted Volunteers based in Cherokee Co., GA. Samuel Patterson (1805-1879) is not related as far as can be determined but he was a neighbor in Union Co., GA. It is possible this record is for the other Joseph Patterson (son of John and Nancy) instead of this one.

Joseph is listed on the 1840 census in Union Co., GA near his parents. His son Lewis was three households away.

They are on the 1850 census in Union Co., GA. Joseph's widowed mother is living with them as is his sister Ann: # 333/333 Joseph Patterson 61 Farmer, SC; Agnes 55 SC; Solomon 24 Farmer GA; Mary 20; Elizabeth 18; Malissa 16; Sary Durham 84 VA; Margaret Patterson 83 SC; Ann, 47 NC.

Who is "Sary" (Sarah) Durham? She was born ca 1765/66 in Virginia. She must be a relative or in-law. One possibility is that she is Agnes's widowed mother (remarried to a Mr. Durham after death of Mr. Wilson). That is just a guess though. Although her name is clearly written as "Durham" could she be a Duncan instead? If so she may be Joseph's mother-in-law from his first marriage. Just a thought.

Joseph Patterson died between 1850 and 1860 in Union Co., GA.

Agnes is listed on the 1860 census in Union Co., GA with daughter Jane and her family: Ivy Log PO, # 504/503 Jesse King 30 Farmer $452/252 NC; Jane M. 25 GA; Cymantha L. 5 NC; Alsey M. 4 NC; Henry 3 NC; Juan C. 6/12 GA; Agnes Patterson 67 SC; Elizabeth 27 GA.

Agnes moved to Hopkins Co., TX in the 1860's and was listed there on the 1870 census with her daughter Elizabeth and family, and next to daughter Jane: Precinct No. 2, Saltillo PO, # 411/409 Andrew King 29 Farmer 0/100 NC; Annie 37 Keeping House GA; Agnes Patterson 75 GA.

Agnes was still in Hopkins Co., TX for the 1880 census, and back with daughter Jane. The census taker listed everyone by initial only, but it is pretty clear this is her: Precinct No (6) Six, page 211, # 165/169 J. P. King male 49, Farming NC-NC-NC; J. M. King, 45 wife Keeping House, Fever GA-SC-NC; H. W. King, 22 son NC-NC-GA; J. C. King, 29 son GA-NC-GA; E. A. King, 18 daughter; W. B.  King, 14 son; M. E. King, 13 daughter; M. R. King, 11 son; T. B. King, 7 son TX-NC-GA; A. J. King, 3 daughter; Luther King, 1 son; Laurence  King, 1 son; N. A. Patterson 85 mother-in-law widowed, NC-VA-VA.

I don't know when Agnes Wilson Patterson died, though sometime after 1880, presumably in Hopkins Co., TX.

Joseph Patterson and first wife Mary Duncan had 8 children as named in the 1908 family record by his granddaughter Mary: William, Joseph, Louis (Lewis), John, Amos, George, Solomon and Judson. One more child (Margaret "Peggy") probably belongs here though Mary listed her as a sister of Joseph instead, but it appears she was confused on that point. I'm not aware of any other proof that these children belong to Joseph (except Solomon who was with Joseph in 1850). These children (except Judson) fit perfectly into Joseph's 1820, 1830 and 1840 census households.

Judson may have died young. That would explain his absence from the census records. However, Mrs. Fountain in her 1908 record listed Judson as marrying Margaret Black and having two sons Joseph and Jimmie. This is difficult to reconcile as there is no room for him in the households of 1830 or 1840. I found no one of his name (born in GA or NC) on the 1850, 1860, 1870 or 1880 census. A couple of thoughts: 1-Mary was mistaken about him being in this family, though hard to imagine her not knowing her own uncles; 2-Judson is a middle name and he is listed on the census and other records under his first name. 3-He was the last child born to his mother who died in childbirth or soon after, and he was "farmed out" to grandparents or other relatives, and was with them in 1830 and 1840. John Patterson did have a boy born ca 1825/30 with him in 1840. That could be Judson. More research may resolve this.

Joseph and his second wife Agnes Wilson had three children per the 1908 record: Pollie, Elizabeth and Melissy. This is supported by the 1850 census record as well as later ones when Agnes lived alternately with two of these daughters.

Unknown Daughter born ca 1790/1800. John Patterson had an apparent daughter this age with him in 1800 aged under 10 (ca 1790/1800), but she was gone from his household by 1810.
Unknown Daughter born ca 1790/1800. John Patterson had an apparent daughter this age with him in 1800 aged under 10 (ca 1790/1800), but she was gone from his household by 1810.

Amy Jane Patterson was born ca 1793/94 per her age on the 1850 census (56). I have a birth date of 3 Apr 1793 for her but don't know the primary source for it. She was born in South Carolina per the 1870 and 1880 census.

She seems to be home with her parents for the 1800 census aged under 10 (ca 1790/1800) and in 1810 aged 16-25 (c1784/94).

Amy married William D. Kincaid on 15 Apr 1815 probably in Buncombe Co., NC. I don't know the source for this marriage date. William Kincaid was born ca 1795/96 per his age on the 1850 census (54). I have a birth date of 3 Apr 1786 for him, but don't know the source. That does not match his 1830, 1850, 1860 or 1870 census ages.

William is listed on the 1820 census in Buncombe Co., NC next to James Kincaid (bef 1775), perhaps his father.

I wasn't able to find them on the 1840 census. They were not listed in Buncombe County that year. They probably moved to Union Co., GA in the 1830's, but they weren't listed there in 1840 either.

They are on the 1850 census in Union Co., GA next to son Robert: # 462/462 William Kincaid, 25 Farmer, $250, GA; William 54, Farmer, born Unknown; Amey 56 born Unknown; Susannah 23 NC; Margarett 20 GA; Martha 17 GA.

Fannin County was created in 1854 from a portion of Union County. They either fell into the new county or moved there before 1860. They are listed on the 1860 census in Fannin next door to son James and family. Martha Denton (c1780 SC) is living with them. Who is she? Sarah Chastain (ca 1833 GA) is also with them: # 100/100, William Kincaid 65 Miller $200/100 NC; Anna 66; Margarett E. 30; Martha A. 27 GA; Martha Denton 80 Infirm SC Pauper; Sarah Chastain 27 GA.

They are still in Fannin for the 1870 census near several of their children: # 719/718 William Kincade 76 Retired Farmer, SC; Ama 77 Keeping House SC; Ann 37 Helps keep house SC.

William D. Kincaid died on 3 Mar 1876 in Fannin Co., GA. I don't know the source for that death date, but it does appear he died before the 1880 census.

Amy is listed on the 1880 census in Fannin near several of her children: # 16/16 Martha Kincaid 47 keeps house GA-SC-SC; Ama, 87 mother, widowed, Dependant, SC-SC-SC.

Amy Jane Patterson Kincaid died ca 1889 in Fannin Co., GA.

William and Amy had 8 children all named by Mary Patterson Fountain in her 1908 record.

Robert Patterson has been something of a mystery. He was named in the 1908 family record as a son of John and Margaret. That record also showed he married "Cassie Pulaski" and had a son John Patterson. For a long time this was all we knew about Robert.

John and Margaret had an apparent son born ca 1794/1800 with them in 1810 who could be Robert. He was gone from their household by 1820 (seemingly).

The 1830 census shows no Pulaski households in the U.S. In 1840 there were several in Beaufort District, South Carolina and one in Washington, D.C., but none elsewhere. It raises the question as to when and where Robert Patterson met and married Cassie Pulaski. Of course it could have been in Buncombe or Haywood Co., NC or in Hall, Rabun or elsewhere in North Georgia, though no marriage record has been found.

There were several Pulaski's throughout the U.S. in 1850 including one family in Monroe Co., GA: John C. Pulaski age 29 born Tennessee and his wife Margaret and young daughter Sarah. Monroe County is in central Georgia just a little east and south of Atlanta. I have no idea if this family is related to Cassie Pulaski Patterson or not.

Someone (Wes Patterson, I think) discovered a Robert Patterson who may be the same one we seek. He was listed on the 1860 census in Rusk Co., TX aged 64 (born ca 1796). Our Robert's brother Amos was in that same county at that time, so that is a point in favor of this being the same Robert. Robert's children were all listed as born in Georgia so that is another point in favor, though some of the children are listed as born in Alabama on other census records.

The problem is that Robert's wife wasn't named Cassie or similar, and that Robert was listed as born in Alabama. Both of those can be easily explained away. Cassie could have died before 1860 and Robert remarried. The birth place could be a simple census error, for how many whites were living in Alabama in the 1790's? Not too many. Robert was born in South Carolina according to the 1880 census entry for his son Robert (Jr).

Robert Patterson of Rusk Co., TX is almost certainly the same Robert who married Ann Strange on 11 Oct 1835 in Franklin Co., GA. Ann M. Johnson was born ca 1805/06 per her age on the 1860 census (54) or ca 1808/09 per her age in 1870 (61). She was born in South Carolina per the 1870 census, though the 1860 census listed Alabama which is probably incorrect. I think she may be a child of Claiborn Johnson (c1784 SC) who was her next door neighbor in 1830, 1840 and who also moved to the same county in TX as she did. Ann first married John Strange on 26 Nov 1825 in Franklin Co., GA. He was born ca 1800/10 per the 1830 census, and died sometime between 1830 and 1835 when Ann remarried. John was listed on the 1830 census in Franklin Co., GA next to Claiborne Johnson, Ann's probable father.

As noted above, Robert Patterson and Ann married on 11 Oct 1835 in Franklin Co., GA. They moved to some place in Alabama for awhile, but were in St. Francis Co., AR by the 1840 census and were listed there next to Ann's parents in Johnsons District (perhaps named for him?).

I was unable to find them on the 1850 census anywhere. They were probably already in Rusk Co., TX by then, but not listed for some reason. Ann's father Claiborne was listed there by himself, apparently widowed.

They were in Rusk Co., TX for the 1860 census. They were not listed near Robert's brother Amos Patterson, but in the same county at least: Beat No 5, Concord PO, # 1510/1528 Robt Patterson 64 Farmer $2800/7500 AL; Ann 54; Jane 24 GA; Mid 22 F. Laborer; Robert 20 F. Laborer; Berry 18 F. Laborer; William 15 F. Laborer.

Backtracking, I tried to find Robert Patterson on the 1830 census. He would be about 34 then, and presumably already married with at least one or more children. There were Roberts everywhere, but I only noted those in Georgia and Alabama. There is one in Greene Co., AL who is the right age; a Robert A. Patterson in Fayette Co., AL who is close; Robert H. Patterson in Clarke Co., GA who matches; One in Newton Co., GA who is much too old; One in Jefferson Co., GA who is close in age, but has no wife or children; one in Putnam Co., GA who is a good age match; finally one in Walton Co., GA who is a little too young, but not too far off considering common census errors.

How can we determine which of the several Roberts above is the same one in Rusk Co., TX in 1860? None of the children home in 1860 were born before 1830 so I can't use them for analysis. A table may help:

County Page Head of Household Enumerations

Walton Co., GA 127 Robert Patterson 0000100000000-1000100000000

Age-wise, those in Greene Co., AL, Clarke and Putnam Co., GA match best for a man born ca 1796. Wes Patterson is partial to the one in Clarke Co., GA for it is near Franklin where he married just 5 years later, and the enumerations are a good match. Furthermore, Wes notes that Robert had two apparent sons born before 1830 from his first marriage and only the one in Clarke would match on that criteria. More research in Clarke Co., GA may help confirm it is the same Robert.

As noted earlier, Robert was on the 1860 census in Rusk Co., TX. He seems to have died between that census and the 1870 census.

Ann is listed on the 1870 census in Nacogdoches Co., TX with son Middleton: District No 3, Melrose PO, # 249/254 Middleton Patterson 32 Farmer $320/760 AL married Jan; Elizabeth 19 Keeping House, TX; Ann M. 61 Domestic Servant $390/0 SC; John E. King 12 TX.

Ann was still in Nacogdoches for the 1880 census with her son Robert, though no relationship was stated: the 49th Enumeration District, # 194/194 R. L. Patterson, 40, Farmer AL-SC-SC; Francis 36 wife TN-TN-TN; Berriman 11 son TX-AL-TN; Maria 3 daughter; Francis 6/12 Dec (female, no relationship given); Mrs. Ann Patterson 75, widowed, boarding, SC-SC-SC.

I don't know when or where Ann died, though sometime after 1880.

Robert Patterson and Cassie Pulaski had at least one child, John Patterson (no further info). Robert and wife Ann had five children as proven by the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census (Jane, Middleton, Robert L., Berry and William). I thought that R(hoda). E. (c1831) wife of Dr. George King might be their daughter for her children were living with various members of the Patterson family in 1870 after her death in the 1860's. She could be a Strange instead of a Patterson and from Ann's first marriage instead. Wes Patterson pointed out that an annotated version of this census does list her as a Strange.

Wes Patterson believes that John Sidney Patterson and Thomas T. Patterson are Robert's sons from his first marriage. They do fit quite well circumstantially, but solid proof is lacking, but the circumstantial evidence is strong enough to include them.

John Patterson was born ca 1797/98 per his age on the 1850 census (52). He was born in North Carolina (per 1850 census), presumably in Buncombe County.

John seems to be with his parents for the 1800 census aged under 10 (ca 1790/1800), and still with them in 1810 aged 10-15 (c1794/1800), and still home in 1820 aged 16-25 (c1794/1804).

On 8 Feb 1823 John Patterson obtained a marriage bond in Haywood Co., NC to marry "Sally Hix" daughter of David Hix (who was also the bondsman). They presumably married on that date or shortly thereafter.

Sarah "Sally" A. Hix was born ca 1802/03 per age on 1850 census (47), somewhere in South Carolina. She is a daughter of David Hix (as proven by her marriage bond) and Ellender Furnett. I don't know the source of her mother's name.

They moved to Georgia by 1825. They were listed on the 1830 census in Rabun Co., GA.  They had an extra female with them Sally's age. That is probably her sister Lucinda who lived with them over the years.

They were in neighboring Union Co., GA for the 1834 state census listed as John Patterson with 4 males and 3 females.

A John Patterson served as a 3rd Sergeant from 22 May 1838 to 14 Jul 1838 in Capt. Samuel Patterson's company of Mounted Volunteers based in Cherokee Co., GA. It isn't 100% certain whether it is this John or some other as there were several in the region at this time.

John Patterson is listed on the 1840 census in Union Co., GA on the same page as his father John.

They are on the 1850 census in Union Co., GA. John's mother Margaret is living with them, as is Sarah's sister Lucinda Hix: # 454/454 John Patterson 52 Farmer $100, NC; Sarah 47 SC; Andrew 18 GA; Humphrey 15; John 11; George 8; Sarah 3; Lucinda Hix 45 SC; Margarett Patterson 83 SC.

In 1854 Fannin County was formed from part of Union County. The Pattersons either fell into the new county or moved there before the 1860 census.

John Patterson died before the 1860 census. I have his death date as 8 Apr 1854 in Fannin Co., GA, but I don't know the source for the date.

Sarah is listed on the 1860 census in Fannin near several of her children. Her sister Lucinda is still with her: 1025 District G.M., Rollin PO, # 357/357 Sarah A. Patterson (wid), 59 $550/50 NC; Sarah M. 14 GA; Lucinda Hicks, 57 Weaver, SC.

Sarah is listed on the 1870 census in Fannin. Her sister Lucinda is still with her, though not listed under the correct surname. Several of Sarah's children are nearby: Morganton PO, # 27/27 Ann Patterson 68 $300/0 SC; Lucinda 66 SC.

I wasn't able to find Sarah on the 1880 census, she probably died in the 1870's, presumably in Fannin Co., GA. Her sister Lucinda was still in Fannin living with her nephew John Patterson (Sarah's son).

The 1908 family record shows eight children for John Patterson: Amy, Joseph, William, Andrew J., Humphrey P., John D., George W., and Sinthy M. Five of those are proven by the 1850 and 1860 census ("Sinthy M." is listed as "Sarah" on the 1850 census and "Sarah M." in 1860).

The 1830 census also reveals an apparent daughter born ca 1825/30. She may have died young, or perhaps she is the "Sinthy M." that was mentioned in the 1908 record.

George Patterson was born ca 1799/1800 per his age on the 1850 census (50) and 1860 census (60). He was born in North Carolina, probably Buncombe County.

He does not seem to be with his parents for the 1800 census so probably born later in the year. He does seem to be home in 1810 aged 10-15 (ca 1794/1800) and apparently home in 1820 age 16-25 (c1794/1804).

George married Rebecca Chastain sometime in the 1820's, possibly in Haywood Co., NC (no marriage record found for them there) or perhaps in Rabun Co., GA. Her name was given as George's wife in the 1908 family record. Rebecca was born between 1800 and 1810 according to her age on the 1830 and 1840 census. Her parents are said to be Elijah Chastain and Hannah Adams, but I don't know what the proof for that is. Elijah was listed on the 1810 census in Haywood Co., NC. I didn't find him on the 1820 or 1830 census. A Hannah Chastain (c1770/80) was in Rabun Co., GA in 1830. That may be Rebecca's mother. A younger Elijah Chastain was listed next to her on that census.

George Patterson is listed on the 1830 census in Rabun Co., GA two houses from Hannah Chastain.

Rebecca Chastain Patterson died in the 1840's in Union Co., GA.

George and children are listed on the 1850 census in Union Co., GA: # 608/608 George Patterson 50 Farmer $1000 NC; William 19 Farmer GA; Elizer 17 (female); John 13; Elijah 11; Margaret 6.

George Patterson married Sophia Dunnagan on 3 Nov 1850 in neighboring Gilmer Co., GA. She was born ca 1804/05 in Georgia. I don't know who her parents were.

They are listed on the 1860 census in Union Co., GA: Young Cane PO, # 618/621 Geo Patterson 60 Farmer $500/550 NC; Sophia 55 GA; Rebecca 8; Isachamon 7 (male); Geo B. 5; Caledonia 2; Robt N (or W) 6/12; J. A. Patterson 22 (male); Elijah 21.

I wasn't able to find George on the 1870 census. He appears to have died before that census. I wasn't able to find Sophia in 1870 either, so perhaps she died as well or perhaps remarried after George's death.

George Patterson and Rebecca Chastain had five children as proven by the 1850 census. Those five and two others are named in the 1908 family record. These seven children are all they seemed to have according to the 1830 through 1850 census records. George and Sophia had five children as named on the 1860 census. The 1908 record only mentions two of them. The others may have died young.

Ann Patterson was born ca 1802/03 per her age on the 1850 census (47). She was born in North Carolina, presumably in Buncombe County.

Ann seems to be home with her parents for the 1810 census aged under 10 (ca 1800/10), and apparently home in 1820 aged 10-15 (ca 1804/10), and seemingly still home in 1830 aged 15-19 (c1810/15), and probably home in 1840 aged 30-39 (1800/10). She was with her mother and brother Joseph in 1850: # 333/333 Joseph Patterson 61 Farmer, SC; Agnes 55 SC; Solomon 24 Farmer GA; Mary 20; Elizabeth 18; Malissa 16; Sary Durham 84 VA; Margaret Patterson 83 SC; Ann, 47 NC.

For the 1860 census she was in Catoosa Co., GA with her nephew Joseph Patterson (son of Joseph Sr.): Ringgold PO, # 241/240 Jos. Patterson 40 Farmer $0/400 NC; M. Patterson 45 female GA; J. D. Patterson 17 male; J. W. Patterson 15 male; M. M. Patterson 14 male; G. D. Patterson 12 male; J. S. Patterson 10 male; W. W. Patterson 7 male; Ann Patterson 59 NC.

I didn't find Ann on the 1870 or 1880 census.

Amos Patterson was born ca 1803/04 per his age on the 1850 census (46). He was born in North Carolina, presumably in Buncombe County.

He seems to be with his parents for the 1810 census aged under 10 (ca 1800/10) and still home in 1820 aged 16-25 (ca 1794/1804).

He moved with his family to Hall Co., GA in the 1820's and married there on 21 Sep 1829 to Elizabeth Wilson. They were married by Hugh Kerr, Justice of the Peace. Elizabeth was born ca 1800/01 in South Carolina. I don't know who her parents. She could be a sister or closely related to his brother Joseph's wife Agnes Wilson (also married in Hall, in 1830).

I wasn't able to find them on the 1830 census. They were not in Hall or Rabun Counties or elsewhere as far as I could determine.

Amos Patterson was a winner in the 1832 Georgia land lottery. He was listed as a resident of Section 1. He won land in Cherokee Co., GA, Lot # 435, District 3, Section 4.

This area became Union County, Georgia that same year. He is listed on the 1834 state census in Union County with 5 males and 2 females.

They are still in Union Co., GA for the 1840 census. Brother George Patterson is two households away.

It appears that Elizabeth Wilson Patterson died between 1850 and 1858, either in Georgia or after the move to Rusk Co., TX.

On 12 Sep 1858 Amos Patterson married Parmelia Morris in Rusk Co., TX. She was born ca 1819/20 in Alabama (both per 1860 census). She appears to have been a widow, so Morris probably isn't her maiden name.

They are listed on the 1860 census in Rusk Co., TX. Robert Patterson (c1796), probably his brother, is also in Rusk in 1860: Beat No. 5, Caledonia PO, # 1447/1465 Amos* Patterson, 51 Farmer $3000/550 NC; Parmelia 40 AL; Lumpkin 30 F. Laborer $300/0 GA; J. J. Patterson 25 male, $150/0; Margaret 22; Nancy 20; Eliza Morris 10 TX; Martha 8. * "Amos" looks like "Anxos" and is indexed as such.

They are next door to S. K. Patterson (c1828) in 1860. That may be George's son Kimsey Patterson, thus Amos's nephew.

I wasn't able to find Amos or Parmelia on the 1870 census. They may have both died before then. I also looked for them on the 1880 census with no luck.

Amos Patterson and Elizabeth Wilson had five children as proven by the 1850 and 1860 census. The 1908 family record mentions these same five. The 1840 census doesn't show any additional children. He and Parmelia had no children together as of the 1860 census, but I don't know if they had any after that.

Unknown Son born ca 1825/30. This child was with John in 1840 aged 10-14 (ca 1825/30). It is probably a grandchild instead of his own son.
