I (Marty Grant) am a 5th Great Grand Nephew of Benjamin Pemberton.
Special thanks to Mike Benefield for sharing a Family Bible record for this family, described as originating with Ms. Sue Pemberton Vaughan of Bristol, TN.
Benjamin Pemberton was born 7 Feb 1786 (per tombstone and Family Bible) in Sullivan Co, TN.
Benjamin is a proven child of Col. John Pemberton and Elizabeth Delaney. He was named among the heirs of his brother Thomas Pemberton, who died without wife or children, though leaving considerable estate. In his estate division (brought about by a lawsuit ca 1858-1874) Benjamin Pemberton was named as still living, so only he was named, and not his children.
Benjamin would probably have been home with his parents for the 1790 census, but unfortunately this census was lost for Tennessee,
He was probably at home with his parents in 1800 as well, but that census is also lost for Tennessee.
He was probably at home with his parents in 1810 as well, but that census is also lost for Tennessee.
Benjamin Pemberton was listed on the 1812 Sullivan County tax list in Captain Harvey King's Company. He was taxed for 1 white (himself) and no blacks and no land.
Benjamin Pemberton married Marianna Sharp 3 Dec 1812 (per Family Bible) probably in Sullivan County, Tennessee. Her maiden name was given in the Family Bible. She was born 10 Oct 1785 (per Family Bible), presumably in Sullivan County, or perhaps in neighboring Washington Co, VA. I don't know who her parents are.
They were probably listed on the 1820 census, but unfortunately this census is lost for eastern Tennessee, including Sullivan County.
Marianna Sharp Pemberton died 19 Mar 1821 (per Family Bible) in Sullivan Co, TN.
Benjamin Pemberton married Barbara Buchanan Dryden on 21 Jun 1825. I don't know what the proof for Barbara's middle name, for the Family Bible and her tombstone show her as "Barbara B. Pemberton", but neither give "Buchanan" as a middle name, though it sounds like it is probably correct. She was born 29 Jun 1792 per her tombstone and the Family Bible. I don't know who her parents were.
Benjamin Pemberton was listed on the 1830 census in Sullivan County. His children by his first wife do not seem to match up age-wise with his 1830 census enumerations. Perhaps they were living with other relatives after the death of their mother, or were just enumerated incorrectly (a common census problem).

Benjamin Pemberton was still listed in Sullivan for the 1840 census. As in 1830, his children by his first wife do not seem to match up age-wise with the census enumerations, so perhaps they were not home, though a couple of them seemed to be.

Benjamin and family were listed on the 1850 census in Sullivan County.

I don't have them on the 1870 census yet, but I suppose they were in Sullivan County that year.
Barbara died on 4 Jan 1872, and Benjamin Pemberton on 23 May 1877. They are buried at the Cold Springs Cemetery in Sullivan County.
Benjamin Pemberton and Marianna Sharp had 5 children per the Family Bible, and he and Barbara B. Dryden had two children per the Family Bible. Most of Benjamin's siblings were dead by the time the Thomas Pemberton (his brother) estate was divided, and their children and grandchildren were named in those records, but since Benjamin was still living then, only he was named, and not his children.
Henry Harrison Pemberton (1814)
Elcana Delaney Pemberton (1817)
Benjamin Franklin Pemberton (1821)
Henry Harrison Pemberton was born 16 Feb 1814 (per Family Bible) in Tennessee (per 1850 census), presumably in Sullivan County.
Henry H. Pemberton was a Private in Captain Abraham McClellan's Company of the 2nd Regiment, 2nd Brigade of Mounted Volunteer Militia, commanded by Major John R. Delaney ordered into service on 25 May 1836 from 1st March 1836 to 30 Apr 1837 for the Cherokee removal.
Henry and his siblings John and Elcana all moved to Dade County, Missouri in the early 1840's.
See his page for more information.
John Sharp Pemberton was born 15 Sep 1815 (per Family Bible) in Tennessee (per 1850 census), presumably in Sullivan County.
John and his siblings Henry and Elcana all moved to Dade County, Missouri in the early 1840's.
See his page for more information.
Elcana Delaney Pemberton was born 1 Aug 1817 (per Family Bible) in Tennessee (per 1850 census), presumably in Sullivan County. He was undoubtedly named for Dr. Elcanah R. Delaney of Sullivan County who was a well known citizen at that time, and also a relative to the Pembertons.
Elcana and his siblings Henry and John all moved to Dade County, Missouri in the early 1840's.
See his page for more information.
Melissa S. Pemberton was born 19 Sep 1819 (per Family Bible) and died 24 Sep 1827 (per Family Bible), presumably in Sullivan Co, TN.
Benjamin Franklin Pemberton was born 19 Mar 1821 (per Family Bible) presumably in Sullivan Co, TN. He seems to be home with his parents for the 1830 census (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25) and home in 1840 (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25), but not with them in 1850.
I did not find Benjamin on the 1850 census elsewhere, so he may have died before then, though his death was not mentioned in the Family Bible record.
Thomas D. Pemberton was born 25 Mar 1826 (per Family Bible) in Sullivan County. He was apparently with Benjamin in 1830 (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30). He was still home with his parents in 1850 ("Thomas" age 22).
Thomas married Sarah Cowan on 23 Mar 1854 (name and date per Family Bible), presumably in Sullivan County.
They were living with his parents for the 1860 census.

Sarah Cowan Pemberton died on 29 Oct 1866 (per Family Bible), presumably in Sullivan County.
I don't have Thomas on the 1870 census yet, but I suppose they were in Sullivan County that year.
On 9 Apr 1873 Thomas D. Pemberton married Susan E. Bartles (name and date per Family Bible). They married in Washington Co, VA (per Family Bible).
They were listed on the 1880 census in Sullivan County. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Thomas D. Pemberton died on 10 Jan 1899 and Susan died on 17 Dec 1941 (both dates per Family Bible).
William H. Pemberton was born 15 Jan 1830 (per Family Bible) presumably in Sullivan Co, TN. He was apparently with Benjamin in 1830 (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30). He died on 8 Sep 1847 (per Family Bible) presumably in Sullivan Co, TN.
