I (Marty Grant) am a 5th Great Grand Nephew of Stanton Pemberton.

Stanton Pemberton (also called "Staunton" Pemberton) was born ca 1775/80 (per census analysis). Someone gave me "1778" as his birth date, but I don't know the source for that. He was presumably born in Culpeper Co, VA, or possibly in Sullivan Co, TN.

Stanton is a proven child of Col. John Pemberton and Elizabeth Delaney. Stanton was named among the heirs of his brother Thomas Pemberton, who died without wife or children, though leaving considerable estate. In his estate division (brought about by a lawsuit) Stanton Pemberton and his children were named, though at that time (between 1858 and 1874), he was already dead.

Stanton was apparently named after his maternal grandmother Frances Stanton Delaney.

Stanton would probably have been home with his parents for the 1790 census, but unfortunately this census was lost for Tennessee,

He was probably at home with his parents in 1800 as well, but that census is also lost for Tennessee.

Stanton Pemberton married Sarah King sometime before 1805 either in Sullivan County, Tennessee or in neighboring Washington Co, VA. I don't know the source for her maiden name, but I've been told she is a daughter of William King and Elizabeth Sharp. I don't know if she is related to Jonathan King (c1792) who married Stanton's sister Nancy Pemberton, but it seems likely they were closely related. Sarah was born ca 1780/81 (per 1850 census) in Tennessee, probably Sullivan County.

They lived in Washington County, Virginia, apparently near his uncle William Pemberton who (I think) lived on Barkers Creek at Walkers Mountain. This is not far at all from where his parents lived just over in Sullivan County, Tennessee.

Stanton was listed on the 1807 personal property tax list in Washington Co., VA. He was not listed before that, so he must have moved there in 1806 or early 1807. He was listed there through 1815, and perhaps beyond.

Stanton Pemberton was listed on the 1810 census in Washington County just three houses from his Uncle William Pemberton.

On 20 Oct 1814, Stanton's uncle William Pemberton made his Will in Washington Co, VA and Stanton Pemberton was one of the witnesses (with Thomas McChesney, and Lazarus Stewart).

Staunton Pemberton was listed on the 1820 census in Washington County. He was the only the Pemberton listed there that year. This list was alphabetical, so I can't tell who his neighbors were.

In the 1830's, Stanton and family moved to Coles County, Illinois.

I don't know the source for this, but I have "1838" listed as Stanton's death date. This works, for he was certainly dead by 1840, for in that year his widow Sarah was listed as head of household on the Coles County census.

Sarah Pemberton was listed as head of household in 1840 Coles County, Illinois.

On 14 Dec 1849, Sarah and her children sold their share of the Thomas Pemberton estate to her brother-in-law Ezekiel Pemberton. The deed listed: Alfred D. Pemberton, William Claburn Pemberton, Henry A. Pemberton, Rice T. Hackett and wife Susannah A. Hackett, formerly Pemberton; Edney Angeline Pemberton, Jonathan J. Pemberton, and Sarah Pemberton, all of Coles County, Illinois and Harvey G. Pemberton, Sarah S. Middleton, formerly Pemberton, and husband Josiah Middleton, and Samuel McConkey and Elizabeth McConkey, formerly George, all of Edgar County, Illinois, to Ezekiel Pemberton of Sullivan Co, TN.

Sarah King Pemberton died in May 1850 in Coles County, Illinois as proven by the 1850 census Mortality Schedule. She was listed as Sarah Pemberton, age 69, died May, born TN. Cause of death was unknown.

Children

Stanton Pemberton and Sarah King had eight children as proven by the estate records of his brother Thomas Pemberton. Thomas died possessing a large amount of land, but was unmarried, so his siblings became his heirs, and since both Stanton and wife were dead by then, their children were named as the heirs.  The finalized division of Thomas Pemberton's Estate was dated sometime between 1858 and 1874 in Sullivan Co, TN, and named the heirs of Stanton, and also noted that they had already sold their interest to Ezekiel Pemberton (their uncle), but it still named them all. I've also seen the deed where they sold this land. Heirs named were: Alfred D. Pemberton, Harvey G. Pemberton, William C. Pemberton, Jonathan J. Pemberton, Henry B. Pemberton, Sarah Middleton and husband Josiah;, Susan A. Hackett, and husband Rice T. Hackett, and Angeline Pemberton.  The 1810, 1820, 1830 and 1840 census record seem to show a couple more than just the eight children named above. These other children may have all died without heirs, or perhaps were unknown to the family back in Tennessee and left out.

Alfred D. Pemberton was born 2 Feb 1805 (source?) in Washington Co, VA. Alfred is a proven son of Stanton Pemberton and named as such in the estate records of Stanton's brother Thomas Pemberton.

Alfred married Hannah Owens in 1826, and second Cathy Combs in 1836, and third Martha --- ca 1842/50. They were in Coles County, Illinois in 1850.

See his page for more information.

Unknown Son (1800/10). Stanton Pemberton had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1810 (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10), but gone by 1820, so probably dead by then.

Harvey G. Pemberton was born 15 Feb 1808 (source?) in Washington Co, VA. Harvey is a proven son of Stanton Pemberton and named as such in the estate records of Stanton's brother Thomas Pemberton.

Harvey married Caroline Clarissa King in 1832. They were in Edgar Co, IL in 1850.

See his page for more information.

William Claiborn Pemberton was born ca 1811/12 (per 1850 census) in Washington Co, VA. William is a proven son of Stanton Pemberton and named as such in the estate records of Stanton's brother Thomas Pemberton.

He was apparently home with his parents in 1820 (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), and apparently home in 1830 (age 20-29, born ca 1800/10), and with his widowed mother in 1840 (age 20-29, born ca 1810/20).

On 14 Dec 1849, William and his siblings, and some of their cousins sold their share of the Thomas Pemberton estate to their uncle Ezekiel Pemberton. The deed listed: Alfred D. Pemberton, William Claburn Pemberton, Henry A. Pemberton, Rice T. Hackett and wife Susannah A. Hackett, formerly Pemberton; Edney Angeline Pemberton, Jonathan J. Pemberton, and Sarah Pemberton, all of Coles County, Illinois and Harvey G. Pemberton, Sarah S. Middleton, formerly Pemberton, and husband Josiah Middleton, and Samuel McConkey and Elizabeth McConkey, formerly George, all of Edgar County, Illinois, to Ezekiel Pemberton of Sullivan Co, TN.

Claburn was home with his brother Alfred and his family in 1850 in Coles County, Illinois.

I don't know the source, but I have "1860" as Claburn's death date.

Unknown Daughter (1810/15). Stanton Pemberton had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1820 (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), and still home in 1830 (age 15-19, born ca 1810/15), but gone by 1830, so probably dead by then. No other daughters were named in the Thomas Pemberton Estate records so I assume this daughter must have died without heirs.

Jonathan Jackson Pemberton was born 15 Dec 1814 (source?) in Washington Co, VA. Jonathan is a proven son of Stanton Pemberton and named as such in the estate records of Stanton's brother Thomas Pemberton.

He married Clarinda Davis in 1838. They were in Coles Co, IL in 1850.

See his page for more information.

Sarah Sharp Pemberton was born 21 Dec 1816 (source?) in Washington Co, VA. Sarah is a proven child of Stanton Pemberton and named as such in the estate records of Stanton's brother Thomas Pemberton.

Sarah seems to be home with her parents for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), and still home in 1830 (age 10-14, born ca 1815/20).

Sarah married Josiah Middleton ca 1840 probably in Coles Co, IL.

I did not find them on the 1840 census.

On 14 Dec 1849, Sarah and her siblings, and some of their cousins sold their share of the Thomas Pemberton estate to their uncle Ezekiel Pemberton. The deed listed: Alfred D. Pemberton, William Claburn Pemberton, Henry A. Pemberton, Rice T. Hackett and wife Susannah A. Hackett, formerly Pemberton; Edney Angeline Pemberton, Jonathan J. Pemberton, and Sarah Pemberton, all of Coles County, Illinois and Harvey G. Pemberton, Sarah S. Middleton, formerly Pemberton, and husband Josiah Middleton, and Samuel McConkey and Elizabeth McConkey, formerly George, all of Edgar County, Illinois, to Ezekiel Pemberton of Sullivan Co, TN.

They were on the 1850 census listed in Edgar County, Illinois. Amanda M. Pemberton (c1832) was living with them. She was either Sarah's younger sister, or a niece, or possibly Sarah's own child (if born out of wedlock).

Susan A. Pemberton was born 1819/20 (per 1850 census) in Washington Co, VA. Susan is a proven child of Stanton Pemberton and named as such in the estate records of Stanton's brother Thomas Pemberton.

Susan seems to be home with her parents for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), and still home in 1830 (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25).

Susan married Napoleon Combs on 11 Jan 1838 in Coles Co, IL. Napoleon was born ca 1810/20 (per 1840 census).

Napoleon was listed on the 1840 census in Coles Co, IL next door to Susan's widowed mother Sarah Pemberton.

Napoleon must have died shortly after 1840, for Susan married Rice Hackett before ca 1846.

On 14 Dec 1849, Susan and her siblings, and some of their cousins sold their share of the Thomas Pemberton estate to their uncle Ezekiel Pemberton. The deed listed: Alfred D. Edna married George Hackett on 9 Mar 1854 in Coles Co, IL.

Amanda M. Pemberton was born ca 1831/32 (per 1850 census) in Washington Co, VA. I don't think Amanda is a child of Stanton and Sarah, but she is probably a granddaughter.  She was not named in the Thomas Pemberton estate records, so that seems to confirm that she was not Stanton's daughter.

She was apparently home with widow Sarah King Pemberton in 1840 (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35).

In 1850 Amanda was with Sarah Pemberton Middleton in Edgar Co, IL. It is entirely possible that she is Sarah's child, and if so, she was probably born out of wedlock. She could be a child of Sarah's brother Alfred Pemberton who's first wife died ca 1836.
