I (Marty Grant) am a 5th Great Grand Nephew of Sarah Pemberton, and a 1st cousin 7 times removed to her husband Thomas Pemberton, though a nephew of his by marriage.

Thomas Pemberton was born ca 1760/65 (per census analysis) presumably in Virginia, I don't know what county. I don't know where his parents were living in the 1760's. His Uncle John Pemberton (and future father-in-law) was in Culpeper County then, but I don't know if Thomas' family was also there.

Thomas is a son of George Pemberton and Sarah ---, but I don't know what the proof of this connection is. Other researchers have given me this data, and I have not yet seen any proof to confirm it though it seems likely since they both went to Adair (then Green) Co, KY at the same time.

I have no data on Thomas' whereabouts in the late 1700's, though he may have been in Montgomery Co, VA in the early 1780's, and in Washington County, Virginia in the late 1780's.

At some point in time, Thomas Pemberton married Sarah Pemberton, probably in Sullivan County, Tennessee where she lived (which borders Washington Co, VA). Sarah was born ca 1765/70 (per census analysis) in Culpeper Co, VA or possibly in Sullivan Co, TN, and is a proven daughter of Col. John Pemberton and Elizabeth Delaney. Sarah was named among the heirs of her brother, also named Thomas Pemberton, who died without wife or children, though leaving considerable estate. In his estate division (brought about by a lawsuit) Sarah Pemberton and her children were named, though at that time (between 1858 and 1874), she and her husband, and most of her children were deceased, so the record also names many of her grandchildren. See the children's section below for details of who was listed in those records.

I believe that Thomas' father George, and Sarah's father John, were brothers, though I have no definitive proof of that. That would make Thomas and Sarah 1st cousins to each other.

I don't know where Thomas and Sarah lived right after their marriage, though it wasn't too long before they were in Adair County, Kentucky.

Thomas probably would have been listed on the 1790 census as head of household, but unfortunately this census was lost for Tennessee, Virginia and Kentucky. The 1787 State census for Virginia shows a Thomas in Albemarle County, and one in King William County, but I'm reasonably sure neither of those are this same Thomas. I think he was in Sullivan Co, TN at that time, or perhaps already in Kentucky.

Thomas Pemberton and family moved to Green County, Kentucky before 1800 and they were listed on a tax list there that year. The same list shows George Pemberton (his father) and William Pemberton (his brother).

The 1800 census for Kentucky is lost, but I'm sure Thomas would have been listed in Green County.

Adair County was formed in 1801 (effective 1802) from the southern half of Green County, and that included the area where the Pembertons lived.

Thomas Pemberton was listed on the 1810 census in Adair County, Kentucky. He was the only Pemberton listed in that county that year (his father died in 1804). Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who his neighbors were.

I don't know the source for this, but I have "1836" listed as Thomas' death date, and that he died in Adair County.

I don't know when Sarah Pemberton Pemberton died, but she was not listed on the 1840 or 1850 census, as far as I've found.

Children

Thomas Pemberton and Sarah Pemberton had six children as proven by the estate records of her brother Thomas Pemberton. Thomas (her brother) died possessing a large amount of land, but was unmarried, so his siblings became his heirs, and since both Thomas (her husband) and she were dead, their children (and in some cases his grandchildren) were named as the heirs.  The finalized division of Thomas Pemberton's Estate (Sarah's brother) was dated sometime between 1858 and 1874 in Sullivan Co, TN, and named the heirs of Sarah Pemberton and husband Thomas Pemberton as this: Bennett Pemberton, deceased (and his 8 children also named); Mildred Watson, deceased (her 12 children named); Dianah Cain; Stephen Pemberton deceased (his five children named); Sarah Hendrickson, deceased (her 6 children named); Elizabeth Watson, deceased (her 5 children named). It should be noted that five of Thomas and Sarah's six children were dead by that time (1858-1874), and one Diana Cain had already sold her share of the estate, so it made no reference to whether she was alive or dead. The 1810 and 1820 census record seem to show many more than just the six children named above. These other children may have all died without heirs, or perhaps were unknown to the family back in Tennessee and left out.

Bennett Pemberton was born ca 1790/91 in Kentucky, presumably in Green (now Adair) County. He is a proven child of Thomas and Sarah and named as such in the Estate division of Thomas Pemberton (his mother's brother).

Bennett married Elizabeth Watson in 1817 in Adair Co, KY and they lived in Kentucky until moving to Jackson Co, MO in the late 1840's.

See their own page for more information.

Mildred Pemberton was born ca 1794/1800 (per census analysis) presumably in Green (now Adair) Co, KY.  She is a proven child of Thomas and Sarah and named as such in the Estate division of Thomas Pemberton (her mother's brother).

Mildred seems to be home with her parents for the 1810 census (age 10-15, born ca 1794/1800).

On 6 Mar 1817 Joel Watson obtained a marriage bond in Adair Co, KY to marry Mildred Pemberton. Joel was born ca 1795/96 (per 1850 census) in Tennessee (same source). I don't know who his parents were, but he is probably closely related to John Watson, Elizabeth Watson and Nancy Watson, each of whom married one of Mildred's siblings.

Joel was listed on the 1820 census in Adair County. This census was mostly alphabetical, so I can't tell who his neighbors were.

Mildred Pemberton Watson died sometime in the late 1830's, between ca 1835 and 1840.

Joel Watson was listed in Adair for the 1840 census. Sometime around 1840 he married again, to Mary Ann Page. I'm not sure what the proof of her maiden name is. I didn't find a marriage record for them.

Joel and family were listed on the 1850 census in Adair County. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Mildred Pemberton Watson was named as heir of Thomas and Sarah Pemberton in the Thomas Pemberton (Sarah's brother) estate division (dated sometime between 1858 and 1874). In this record Mildred Watson, deceased, was named, and since she was dead, her 12 children were named in her place: Louisa Rice, husband Adam; Nancy Manning, husband Phillip; Sarah Hartwell, husband ---; Martin Watson, Elizabeth Bennett, husband Greene; William Watson, John Watson, Greene Watson, Creed Watson, Silas Watson, James Watson, and Joel Watson.

Dianah Pemberton was born ca 1794/1800 (per census analysis) or ca 1804/05 (per 1850 census). I'm not sure which birth date is more accurate, for in 1850 she was "45" born ca 1804/05. In 1840 she was age 40-49 (born ca 1790/1800), in 1830 she was 20-29 (born ca 1800/10), and I didn't find her in 1820. She is listed as "Anna" on many records, and this is consistent with other "Dianah" Pembertons in the family also being listed as "Anna".

She was presumably born in Green (now Adair) Co, KY.  She is a proven child of Thomas and Sarah and named as such in the Estate division of Thomas Pemberton (her mother's brother).

Dianah seems to be home with her parents for the 1810 census (age 10-15, born ca 1794/1800).

On 27 Sep 1819 Pemberton Cave obtained a marriage bond in Adair Co, KY to marry Anna Pemberton. Now isn't his name interesting! He must be related in some fashion, or else his parents were close friends to the Pembertons. Pemberton was born ca 1790/1800 (per 1840 census). or ca 1800/10 per 1830 census. I don't know who his parents were, but it is certainly possible that his mother was a Pemberton. I have his name as "Cave" and this seems to match the census records I've found for him, but at least one record lists his name as "Cain", though I think that is probably wrong.

I was unable to locate them on the 1820 census in Adair County. I manually read the entire census and did not see them, nor any other Cave family listed.

They were in Adair for the 1830 census.

Pemberton Cave died in the 1840's, probably between ca 1843 and 1850.

Dianah was listed on the 1850 census in Adair County. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

I did not find her, nor her children in 1860, at least not in Adair County, Kentucky.

Dianah Pemberton Cain was named as heir of Thomas and Sarah Pemberton in the Thomas Pemberton (Sarah's brother) estate division (dated sometime between 1858 and 1874). In this record Dianah Cain was named as heir of Thomas and Sarah, but it was stated that she had previously sold her share to Ezekiel Pemberton, so nothing else was said about her, whether she was living or dead. There is probably a Sullivan Co, TN deed showing her selling her share to Ezekiel Pemberton (who died in 1857).

Stephen Pemberton was born ca 1790/1800 in Kentucky, presumably in Green (now Adair) County. He is a proven child of Thomas and Sarah and named as such in the Estate division of Thomas Pemberton (his mother's brother).

Stephen married Nancy Watson in 1819 in Adair Co, KY and they lived in Adair County at least until the 1830's.

See their own page for more information.

Unknown Son (1804/10). Thomas and Sarah had an apparent son this age. He was with them in 1810 ("under 10", born ca 1800/10) and still home in 1820 (age 10-15, born ca 1804/10) and still home in 1830 (age 20-29, born ca 1800/10).

I don't know who this might have been. No additional sons were named as heirs of Thomas and Sarah, so this son may have died unmarried, or been left out for some reason.

Unknown Son (c1810). Thomas and Sarah had an apparent son this age. He was with them in 1810 ("under 10", born ca 1800/10) and still home in 1820 (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20) and still home in 1830 (age 20-29, born ca 1800/10). The only way to reconcile all these entries is if this child was born ca 1810.

I don't know who this might have been. No additional sons were named as heirs of Thomas and Sarah, so this son may have died unmarried, or been left out for some reason.

Sarah Pemberton was born ca 1804/10 (per census analysis) in Adair Co, KY.  She is a proven child of Thomas and Sarah and named as such in the Estate division of Thomas Pemberton (her mother's brother).

Sarah seems to be home with her parents for the 1810 census (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10), and still home in 1820 (age 10-15, born ca 1804/10).

On 19 Oct 1827 Levi Hendrickson obtained a marriage bond in Adair County to marry Sarah Pemberton. Levi was born ca 1801/02 in Kentucky.

They were on the 1830 census in Adair County near sister Mildred Pemberton Watson.

1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

1 Female(s) 20-29 (1800-1810)	Sarah PEMBERTON Hendrickson (1804/10) wife m 1827

I didn't find them in 1840, but they were probably still in Adair somewhere.

Sarah Pemberton Hendrickson died sometime ca 1840. On 15 Feb 1841, Levi remarried (to Elizabeth Sanders).

Levi and family were listed on the 1850 census in Adair County. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Sarah Pemberton Hendrickson was named as heir of Thomas and Sarah Pemberton in her Uncle Thomas Pemberton's estate division (dated sometime between 1858 and 1874). In this record Sarah Hendrickson, deceased, was named, and since she was dead, her 6 children were named in her place: Thomas, James, Stephen, Benjamin, John, and Sarah Hendrickson.

Elizabeth Pemberton was born ca 1800/10 (per census analysis) in Adair Co, KY.  She is a proven child of Thomas and Sarah and named as such in the Estate division of Thomas Pemberton (her mother's brother).

Elizabeth seems to be home with her parents for the 1810 census (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10), and still home in 1820 (age "under 10", born ca 1810), which doesn't quite work, but it must be her.

On 28 Nov 1829, John Watson obtained a marriage bond in Adair County to married Elizabeth Pemberton.

I have not found them on the 1830, 1840 or 1850 census, at least not in Adair County. They must have moved away somewhere right after marriage. "John Watson" is an extremely common name, so I have not attempted to search them out just yet. They may have been in some nearby county in Kentucky, or perhaps went to Missouri as some other Pembertons did.

Elizabeth Pemberton Watson was named as heir of Thomas and Sarah Pemberton in her Uncle Thomas Pemberton's estate division (dated sometime between 1858 and 1874). In this record Elizabeth Watson, deceased, and husband John (also deceased) were named, and since she was dead, her 5 children were named in her place: Malinda A. Larimore, deceased, and in her place an unknown Larimore child; Eliza Watson, Elizabeth P. Watson, Mary A. Watson and Greene P. Watson.

Unknown Daughter (1800/10). Thomas and Sarah had an apparent daughter this age. She was with them in 1810 ("under 10", born ca 1800/10) but gone by 1820, so probably married or dead by then.

I don't know who this might have been. No additional daughters were named as heirs of Thomas and Sarah, so this daughter may have died unmarried, or been left out for some reason.

I don't know who this might have been. No additional daughters were named as heirs of Thomas and Sarah, so this daughter may have died unmarried, or been left out for some reason.

There was a Nancy Pemberton who married Clement Banks on or about 6 Nov 1820 in Adair. This same Clement married again in 1823, and that makes me believe that his wife Nancy was a daughter of Stephen and she died without any surviving children.

I'm strongly inclined to believe that Nancy was Thomas' child.

Unknown Son (1810/15). Thomas and Sarah had an apparent son this age. He was with them in 1820 ("under 10", born ca 1810/20) and still home in 1830 (age 10-15, born ca 1810/15).

I don't know who this might have been. No additional sons were named as heirs of Thomas and Sarah, so this son may have died unmarried, or been left out for some reason.
