I (Marty Grant) am a 4th Great Grandson of John Tanner and Susannah Stroud.

John Tanner was born ca 1801/1802 (per 1850 census) in North Carolina (per 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 census). I think that he was born in old Burke County (now McDowell County), but have not been able to prove that so far.

I believe that John Tanner is a son of a Joseph Tanner who was in Burke County, North Carolina from ca 1800 to the 1820's, but I have yet to prove that Joseph is Johns father. The evidence is entirely circumstantial. The first record we have for John Tanner is his 1830 census entry (in Macon Co, NC). There was an older woman living with him who could be his widowed mother, or widowed mother-in-law. If his mother, then that means his father was dead by 1830, and sure enough, Joseph Tanner had died before then. More circumstantial evidence is that Joseph Tanner had an apparent son Johns age, per his 1810 and 1820 census entries. The last tidbit of evidence is that John named his apparent oldest son "Joseph". So taken together, this builds a compelling (but not overwhelming) case that Joseph Tanner is Johns father.

The only other Tanners in Western North Carolina at the time were those in Rutherford County, all descendants of old Michael Tanner (1732-1802). Joseph Tanner is possibly related to the Michael Tanner family in some way, for they did not live very far apart. There were other Tanners in North Carolina in those days, including some in Mecklenburg County and others in Eastern North Carolina. It is certainly possible that John Tanner is from one of those other Tanner lines instead of Joseph Tanner, but for now Im making the assumption that John was from the Burke County area based on the fact that his wife (Susannah Stroud) was certainly from Burke County. That is likely where she and John married, so that makes it the logical place to look for John Tanners ancestry, and Joseph Tanner was the only Tanner in that area, so that makes him the logical candidate to be Johns father.

John Tanner would have been about 8 years old by the time of the 1810 census. Joseph Tanner had one apparent son with him in Burke County that year aged "under 10" (born ca 1800/10). Presumably this is John.

John Tanner would have been about 18 years old by the 1820 census. Joseph Tanner had two apparent sons with him that year. One was aged 16-26 (born ca 1794/1804) more specifically aged 16-17 (born ca 1802/04) which fits very well for John. The other was aged 10-15 (born ca 1804/10) which is not a good fit, but it could still be him if I have Johns birth year figured slightly wrong.

John Tanner married Susannah Stroud sometime between 1820 and ca 1824 in Burke (now McDowell) Co, NC. Susannah was born ca 1805/06 in Burke, now McDowell County, North Carolina. I believe she is a child of Peter Stroud and Margaret Curtis. No marriage record was found, but the proof of Susannahs maiden name is found in the Death Certificate of her daughter Mary Lucinda Tanner Fouts dated 22 Dec 1925 where her parents are given as "John Tanner" and " Stroud". Although Death Certificates are often inaccurate in regards to the parents names, I feel this one is probably correct, or at least I hope it is, for it is the only record Ive found on the subject.

Sometime in the 1820's, John Tanner moved to nearby Macon County, North Carolina (formed in 1828 from Haywood County) and settled between Rabbit Creek and Ellijay Creek or in that general area (based on his neighbors on the 1830 census). This is just east of the town of Franklin. I dont know what drew John Tanner to Macon County.

John Tanner was listed on the 1830 census in Macon County. A likely relative, Elizabeth Tanner (1780/90) was also in Macon County that year, though listed many pages away from John. An analysis of her neighbors shows that she lived on or near Burningtown Creek which was about 6 or more miles away. However, since some of John Tanners children married into some Burningtown families (including the Waters family, who were neighbors of Elizabeth) that seems to tie John and Elizabeth together in some fashion. Elizabeth was an apparent widow, and could easily be a relative of Johns, but I dont know the nature of their relationship. Possibilities are his widowed mother (which I dont think is likely), or a widowed sister-in-law, or a widowed aunt. These last two seem more likely.

Johns neighbors on either side in 1830 were Andrew Younts and James Holt. Christopher Setzer who was two houses away owned land on Ellijay Creek, and some other nearby neighbors owned land on Rabbit Creek. John Tanner had an older female living with him in 1830. She was born ca 1780/90. She could be his widowed mother (though much too young to be Joseph Tanners wife), or perhaps Susannahs widowed mother (though if she is Peter and Margarets daughter as I have figured, her parents were both still alive and listed in Burke County that year). So there is some room for speculation as to who this woman might be. She could be a boarder, or an older sister to either John or Susannah or perhaps a widowed or single Aunt.

John Tanner was listed as a voter in the 1835 Congressional Elections. He voted in Franklin Precinct in Macon County. An Archibald Tanner was also listed as a voter in the same precinct. Could he be a brother to John? I have no additional data on him. Peter Stroud voted just three places ahead of John Tanner, so that means they were probably at the voting precinct at the same time. I dont know for sure, but that is probably Susannahs brother Peter G. Stroud (1807), though it could be one of the other Peter Strouds.

Between 1838 and 1840, John Tanner moved his family a few miles (about 30 miles) south east into Union County, Georgia (now Towns County, Georgia), settling then (or later) in the Lower Hiwassee area. At that time, they were right on the Union County - Rabun County, Georgia border, though in Union County. Coincidentally (or not), several members of the Michael Tanner family also moved to Union County, Georgia around that time, though they did not live in the same part of the county with John Tanner.

They were listed on the 1840 census in Union County, Georgia.

They were still in Union County for the 1850 census. Based on their neighbors, they seemed to be on the other side of Union County in the part that later became Fannin County. This may mean they moved around a bit before settling in the Towns County area, or else this is just a census quirk.

In 1854, Fannin County was formed from the western part of Union County, including where John Tanner had apparently been living in 1850. In 1856 Towns County was formed from the eastern part of Union County, and this is apparently were John Tanner was living later on (or all along).

John Tanner and family were listed on the 1860 census in Towns County, Georgia.

Susannah Stroud Tanner died in the 1860-1870 time-frame in Towns County, Georgia.

John Tanner married Rachel Potts on 8 Jul 1866 in Towns County, Georgia. Rachel was born ca 1844/45 in Georgia. I dont know who her parents were. I searched for her on the 1850 and 1860 census with no success.

John and Rachel Tanner were listed on the 1870 census in Towns County, Georgia. No children were listed with them though some should have been there. (The 1870 census has many problems throughout the south.)

The 1880 census is the last record I have for John Tanner. He died sometime after 1880. I didnt find him on the 1900 census, nor did I find Rachel Potts Tanner in 1900.

Children

John Tanner and Susannah Stroud had seven children, and he and Rachel Potts had at least five children.

Joseph Tanner (c1824)

Malinda Tanner (c1828)

Matilda Tanner (c1830)

Mary Lucinda Tanner (1836)

Sarah Tanner (c1838)

Emily A. Tanner (1840)

John S. Tanner (c1844)

Carl A. E. "Karr" Tanner (1866)

Alonzo Tanner (c1871)

Nancy Tanner (c1873)

Eli Tanner (c1874)

Seaburn Tanner (1879)

Joseph Tanner was born ca 1823/24 (per 1850 census) in North Carolina (per 1850 census) probably in Burke (now McDowell) Co, NC. He is probably named after his grandfather Joseph Tanner.

Joseph seems to be home with his parents for the 1830 census (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25), and seems to be with them still in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30). He was home with his parents in 1850 ("Joseph" age 26, born NC).

The 1850 census is the last record I have for Joseph. He may have died before 1860 or moved out of the area.

Malinda Tanner was born ca 1827/28 (per 1850 census) in North Carolina (per 1850 census), either in Burke (now McDowell) Co, NC or in Macon Co, NC. Malinda is not a proven child of John and Susannah, but Im fairly sure she belongs with them. They did have an apparent daughter her age with them in 1830 (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and with them in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30). She was just a few houses from John in both the 1850 and 1860 census, so that adds to the evidence that she is their child.

Malinda Tanner married James Barnes in Union Co, GA on 30 Nov 1848. They were married by W. A. Brown, Justice of the Peace. James M. Barnes was born ca 1824/25 in North Carolina. I dont know who his parents were.

James and Malinda were listed on the 1850 census just a few houses from her parents.

I did not find them in 1870 or 1880.

Matilda Tanner was born ca 1829/30 (per 1850 census) in North Carolina (per 1850 census), in Macon Co, NC. She seems to be with her parents for the 1830 census (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and with them in 1840 (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35). She was home with them in 1850 ("Matilda" age 20, born NC).

In 1860 she was listed twice, once with her parents in Towns Co, GA ("Matilda" age 26, born NC) and also in Macon Co, NC with the John Fouts family (who was an in-law relationship, an uncle to her brother-in-law William R. Fouts). They were next door to Matilda's sister Mary L. Tanner Fouts.

I did not find her after 1860. She was not with her parents in 1870. She may have died, or married someone in the 1860's.

Mary Lucinda Tanner was born 3 Jul 1836 (source?) or ca 1834/35 (per 1850 census) in Macon Co, NC (per 1860 census). She seems to be with her parents for the 1840 census (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40), and with them in 1850 ("Mary" age 15, born NC).

Mary married William Riley Fouts ca 1858, possibly in Macon County (but no marriage record found there). He was born 17 May 1838 (per tombstone) in Macon Co, NC, a son of James D. Fouts and Rebecca Barnes.

They lived in Macon County until their deaths, he on 22 May 1917, and she on 22 Dec 1925. Her death certificate gave her name as "Mary L. Fouts" parents "John Tanner" and " Stroud". She died in Franklin Township. (Macon Co, NC Death Records Book 6 page 71).

Her husband is buried at the Fouts Cemetery, and I suppose she is as well.

See the page for Williams parents for a more detailed study of the Fouts family.

Sarah Tanner was born ca 1837/38 (per 1850 census) in Macon Co, NC. She seems to be with her parents for the 1840 census (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40), and with them in 1850 ("Sarah" age 12, born NC). She was not with her parents in 1860, so I presumed she had married or died in the 1850's.

I found a marriage record dated 17 Feb 1854 in Union Co, GA between "Sarah M. Tanner" and "James M. Truelove", by William Pruitt, Minister of the Gospel. For years I assumed this was Sarah, daughter of John, but I never found any additional data on this couple in order to confirm it. However, in 2000 I heard from another researcher who had Sarah (daughter of John) married to John Oliver Stroud. After asking for proof, I never heard back from her, but after looking at the data I already had on John O. Stroud, it seems reasonable that his wife Sarah A. could be Sarah Tanner daughter of John. However, proof is lacking as far as I know. This means that the Sarah M. Tanner who married James Truelove is some other Sarah, probably part of the Michael Tanner family (as James Truelove is part of that family too).

However, I have some doubt about whether Sarah Tanner (c1838) is the same person as Sarah A. () wife of John Oliver Stroud. There may be some hard evidence proving this, but I havent seen it yet. First Ill outline why it could be true. Sarah A. (wife of John O. Stroud) was roughly the same age as Sarah Tanner, so that matches. John O. Stroud is Sarah Tanners first cousin, so that makes a marriage likely (a large number of marriages back then were between cousins). Those are the only two strong points in favor. However, here are the negatives. First of all is Sarahs birth place. Sarah Tanner was reported as born in NC per the 1850 census. Sarah A. wife of John O. Stroud was reported as born in GA per the 1870 and 1880 and 1900 census. This could be explained away if the 1850 census entry was in error. However, further complications are in Sarah A. () Strouds 1880 and 1900 census entries. Those census records also listed the birth places of parents. In 1880 her parents were listed as born in TN (father) and GA (mother). In 1900 her parents were listed as both born in GA. This does not agree with what we know about Sarah Tanners parents, both of whom were born in North Carolina.

So based only on circumstantial evidence, there are points for and against Sarah Tanner, daughter of John Tanner, being the same person as Sarah A., wife of John Oliver Stroud. So pending evidence either way, Im leaving Sarah Tanners marriage as blank for now. (See John O. Strouds entry under his parents page: William Austin Stroud and Priscilla ) ***Link***

Emily A. Tanner was born 4 Sep 1840 (per tombstone) in Union Co, GA (now Towns Co, GA). She was home with her parents in 1850 ("Emily" age 10, born GA), and with them still in 1860 ("Emily" age 20, born GA).

Between 1860 and 1862, Emily married Jacob Jackson Waters. He was from Macon County, North Carolina. I assume their families knew each other from back when the Tanners were in Macon. I didnt find a marriage record, but they may have married in Towns County, Georgia. They returned to Macon County to live.

Emily died in May 1875 (per tombstone) in Macon County, and is buried at the Briartown Cemetery. See their own page for additional information.

John S. Tanner was born ca 1843/44 (per 1850 census) in Union (now Towns) Co, GA. He was home with his parents for the 1850 census ("John" age 6, born GA), and with them in 1860 ("John" age 14, born GA).

Sometime before ca 1867, John married Lavina presumably in Towns Co, GA. I dont know her maiden name.

I did not find them on the 1870 census.

They were on the 1880 census in Towns County next to his parents. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Carl A. E. "Karr" Tanner was born March 1866 (per 1900 census), presumably in Towns Co, GA. I had come across him before, but had no idea he was John Tanner's son Linda Wallace told me about him. His death certificate lists him as a child of John Tanner and 2nd wife Rachel Potts.

It is entirely possible that Karr and Alonzo (see below) are one and the same person, though the ages are off a little bit.

Karr was not with his parents for the 1870 census, nor listed elsewhere that year. He was not with them in 1880 either, or elsewhere, unless he is the same person as Alonzo (who was with them aged 9 years old).

On 17 Sep 1891 A. E. Tanner married Polinah Thomason in Union Co., GA. They were married by T. M. Swain, Justice of the Peace. She had several children already but it isn't clear if she had been married before. She is a child of Asa Thomason and Minty (---). Her older children were James Brewster (Jun 1881 - after 1900), John Ace Redden (or Tanner) (1886-1946) and Dyse Redden (Jun 1889 - after 1900).

They are listed on the 1900 census in neighboring Cherokee Co., NC, Notla Township, page 75, house # 21, family # 21 -

They were still in Cherokee for the 1910 census, Notla Township, # 54/54

They were in Union Co., GA for the 1920 census, Ivy Log Township # 50/50

Carl Tanner died on 5 Oct 1922 in Union Co., GA by drowning. His death certificate lists his birth date as 8 Sep 1860 which is way off. His place of burial is left blank.

Paulina died on 8 May 1934 in Cherokee Co., NC and is buried there at the Bellview Community Cemetery.

Alonzo Tanner was born ca 1870/71 (per 1880 census) in Towns Co, GA. He was home with his parents in 1880 ("Alonzo" age 9, born GA). I have no additional data on him. It is entirely possible that he is the same person as Carl A. E. "Karr" Tanner listed above.

Nancy Tanner was born ca 1872/73 (per 1880 census) in Towns Co, GA. She was home with her parents in 1880 ("Nancy" age 7, born GA). I have no additional data on her.

Eli Tanner was born ca 1873/74 (per 1880 census) in Towns Co, GA. He was home with his parents in 1880 ("Eli" age 6, born GA). I have no additional data on him.

Seaburn Tanner was born September 1879 (per 1880 census) in Towns Co, GA. He was home with his parents in 1880 ("Seburn" age 8 months, born Sept, born GA). He married Tisha Hughes probably in Cherokee Co., NC.

He died 17 Jan 1937 in Cherokee Co., NC and is buried at Notla Cemetery.
