I (Marty Grant) am a 4th Great Grandson of Michael Jackson Waters and Rebecca Fouts.
Michael Jackson Waters was born ca 1815/20 (per census analysis). He was either born in Mecklenburg County, NC or possibly in Haywood County, since his parents moved sometime in that same time period.
He apparently used his middle name of "Jackson" as his name, to avoid confusion with his father. He may have been named for Andrew Jackson who was quite famous at the time Michael Jackson Waters' was born.
Michael Jackson Waters was a son of Michael Waters and Emelia Stewart. I have not seen direct evidence of this relationship, but the circumstantial evidence is very strong, as they were neighbors, and had the same name, and Michael (Sr) did have an apparent son that same age (per census records).
Jackson's parents left Mecklenburg County, North Carolina sometime between 1815 and 1820, taking Jackson with them (assuming he was born before the move), and settled in the Burningtown and Iotla Creek area of (then) Haywood County (now Macon County).
For the 1820 census, Jackson seems to be home with his parents enumerated in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1810/20).
Macon County was formed in 1828 from the western portion of Haywood County. Apparently the Waters were already there by the time Macon was formed.
Jackson seems to be home with his parents for the 1830 census aged 10-14 (born ca 1815/20).
In July 1835 Court, Eli Collins (Jackson's brother-in-law) became a Constable for Macon County and had to post bond, and his security (bondsmen) included J. M. Waters, and others. (Macon Co, NC Court Minutes 1833-1836 pg 86)
On 20 Mar 1838, Michael J. Waters obtained a marriage bond in Macon County to marry Rebecca Fouts. George Clampett (Rebecca's brother-in-law) was bondsman. Rebecca was born May 1822 in Ashe Co, NC, daughter of Jacob Fouts and Mary Margaret Baker.
In June 1839 Court, M. J. Waters was listed as a juror. (Macon Co, NC Court Minutes 1838-1855 pg 42, 48)
Also in June 1839 Court, Michael J. Waters and Samuel H. Waters (brother) were listed as jurors for the next court. (Macon Co, NC Court Minutes 1838-1855 pg 48)
Michael Jackson Waters was listed on the 1840 census in Macon County. He was next door to James Fouts, his brother-in-law.

In January 1840 Court, M. J. Fouts was listed as a juror. His brother-in-law James Fouts was in the same jury. (Macon Co, NC Court Minutes 1838-1855 pg 72)
In March 1840 Court, Michael J. Waters "surrendered in open court the body of Zachariah Evans in discharge of himself as bail" in the case of James Robinson & Stephen Greenwood vs Zachariah Evans. This means that Jackson was bail (security, or bondsman) for his brother-in-law Zachariah Evans, and that when he came to court with Evans, he was discharged from his obligation of bail or bond. (Macon Co, NC Court Minutes 1838-1855 pg 82)
In June 1840 Court, Jackson Waters was listed as a juror. (Macon Co, NC Court Minutes 1838-1855 pg 95)
Sometime before September 1846, Michael Jackson Waters died in Macon County. In Court it was ordered that Samuel Waters (his brother) be appointed guardian of the infant heirs of M. J. Waters, deceased, namely Rebecca Waters, Louisa Waters and Madison Waters (which is actually Jacob Jackson Waters, don't know why he was listed as "Madison"). (Macon Co, NC Court Minutes 1838-1855 pg 344)
In September 1847, a case against Rebecca Waters, and S. H. Waters, "guardians per denta leta" was brought by CatherineShield. This may be a continuation of the June 1842 case against Jackson. (Macon Co, NC Court Minutes 1838-1855 pg 369)
On 20 Feb 1849 Reuben P. Evans obtained a marriage bond in Macon County to marry widow Rebecca Fouts Waters. Her brother-in-law George Clampett was bondsman once again. Reuben P. Evans was born ca 1823/24 in Haywood Co, NC, a son of Zachariah Evans and Mary Waters, and was a first cousin to Michael Jackson Waters, Rebecca's first husband.
Reuben and Rebecca were listed on the 1850 census in Macon County. Her Waters children were with them. Their youngest child was an Evans, though listed as a Waters by mistake (a common census error). They were just 2 houses from his parents.

They were listed on the 1880 census in Nantahala Township. For some reason, Rebecca's father's birthplace was listed as "Ma", which either means Massachusetts or Maine, neither of which are correct for her father.

Reuben P. Evans died sometime between 1880 and 1900. He is buried at Aquone Cemetery near Nantahala Lake. His stone just has "Reuben Evans" with no dates. It looks like all the other stones nearby, and I think he was probably moved here from somewhere else.
Rebecca was still living in 1900 and listed with her son George.

Rebecca Fouts Waters Evans died sometime after 1900, apparently before 1910, for I did not find her on the 1910 census. She is buried at Aquone next to her husband. Her tombstone says "wife of Reuben Evans", and does not have her name or any dates on it. Like his, I suspect her grave was moved at some point (due to lake construction) and a new stone erected.
Michael Jackson Waters and Rebecca Fouts had two children as proven by the 1846 court record, as well as by the 1850 and 1860 census. Rebecca and her second husband Reuben P. Evans had seven children as proven by the various census records. In the 1846 record, the "infant heirs" of M. J. Waters were named as "Rebecca Waters, Louisa Waters and Madison Waters". I had always assumed the first entry was actually the widow (since her name was Rebecca), but it is possible that they had a daughter named Rebecca Waters also. If so, she had probably died before 1850.
Louisa Jane Waters was born 18 Sep 1840 (per tombstone) in Macon Co, NC. She was apparently home with her parents for the 1840 census (aged "under 5", born ca 1835/40), and was listed on the 1850 census with her parents ("Louisa" age 10, born Macon) and was home with parents in 1860 ("Louisa" age 17).
On 24 Oct 1861, William Morgan obtained a marriage bond in Macon County to marry L. J. Waters. William A. McCoy was bondsman. There were several men named "William Morgan" in the area, so I'm not entirely sure which one this was. There was a William K. Morgan in Macon in 1850, born ca 1838, son of Ann Morgan (c1815). I don't know his father. There was also a William Morgan born ca 1837, son of James and Elizabeth Morgan. Also William C. Morgan (c1836) son of George and Esther (---) Morgan. These three were the only "William" Morgan in Macon County in 1850, and all were about the same age. One of these (or none of these) could be the same William who married Louisa Waters. In 1860, William K. Morgan was still with his mother Ann; William Morgan was still with James and Elizabeth, and there were no others of that name and close to that age.
Based on the above analysis, I'd say that this William (who married Louisa Waters) is a son of James Morgan and Elizabeth Kilpatrick (married in Macon in 1833). I could be mistaken, but he looks like the best fit.
William Morgan died in September 1863 in the Civil War. I don't have his record, so I don't know the details.
On 30 Sep 1866, William Ray married Louisa Waters Morgan in Macon County. William Ray was born May 1840 (per 1900 census) in Macon County, son of John Ray and Nancy Sumner.
They were listed on the 1870 census in Burningtown Township.

Louisa Jane Waters Morgan Ray died on 13 Dec 1913 in Macon County, and William Ray died on 12 Aug 1928. They are buried at the Cope Cemetery.
Jacob Jackson Waters was born 22 Apr 1842 in Macon Co, NC and died 19 Jan 1923 in Macon County. He married twice, first to Emily A. Tanner ca 1861, and second to Martha Jane Fouts in 1878. See their own page for additional information.
Susan C. Evans was born ca 1849 (per 1850 census age of 8 months) in Macon Co, NC. She was listed on the 1850 census with her parents ("Susa C" age 8 months, born Macon) and was home with parents in 1860 ("Susan C." age 10), and still home in 1870 ("Susan" age 20).
On 16 Mar 1871, Susan C. Evans married John T. Barnes in Macon County. They were married by Mark May, Minister of the Gospel. John Thomas Barnes was a son of John Barnes and Mary Ann ---.
I didn't find them on the 1880 census. They must have moved away or died. John's parents had a 2 year old Barnes grandchild (Mary R. Barnes) listed with them in 1880, could that be an orphaned child of John and Susan?
Cecilia E. Evans was born 18 Aug 1851 (calculated from age given on tombstone) in Macon Co, NC. She was listed on the 1860 census with her parents ("Sela E" age 9, born Macon) and was home with parents in 1870 ("Cecilia E." age 19).
On 2 Apr 1871, Celia E. Evans married Jacob Bateman in Macon County. They were married by Mark May, Minister of the Gospel. Jacob Bateman was a son Archibald Bateman and Mahala Lambert.
They were listed in Macon County for the 1880 census in Nantahala Township. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
They were listed on the 1900 census in Nantahala Township. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Cecilia died on 18 Oct 1901 and is buried at Aquone Cemetery. I don't know when Jacob died.
Dianna Evans was born ca 1852/53 (per 1860 census) in Macon Co, NC. She was listed on the 1860 census with her parents ("Dianna" age 7, born Macon) but was gone by 1870, so probably married or dead by then. I did not find a marriage record for her in Macon County, so I think she probably died in the 1860's.
William J. Evans was born ca 1854/55 (per 1860 census) in Macon Co, NC. He was listed on the 1860 census with his parents ("William" age 5, born Macon) and was home with parents in 1870 ("William" age 15), and still home in 1880 ("William J." age 23).
On 4 Dec 1892, William J. Evans, age 35, married Alice S. Garrison, age 18, in Macon County. They were married by S. J. May, Justice of the Peace. She was born ca 1874/75 in Swain Co, NC, daughter of Robert P. Garrison and Sarah Welch.
They were listed on the 1900 census in Nantahala Township. The entry was so dim that I could barely read it. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Mary Malinda L. Evans was born 2 Oct 1857 (per tombstone) in Macon Co, NC. She used the nickname "Lindy". She was listed on the 1860 census with her parents ("Malinda L.", age 3, born Macon). She was home with parents in 1870 ("Malinda" age 13).
On 5 Apr 1878 she married Americus Erastus "Tom" Wright in neighboring Cherokee Co, NC.
See their own page for additional information.
Isabel Evans was born ca 1860 (per 1870 census) in Macon Co, NC. She was not listed on the 1860 census, so probably not born yet. She was home with parents in 1870 ("Ibbie" age 10) and in 1880 ("Ibba" age 19).
Isabel Evans, age 23, married J. Henry Roland, age 21 on 9 Feb 1889 in Macon County. They were married by Z. Barnes, Justice of the Peace (Zebedee Barnes, I think). James Henry Rowland was a son of William L. Rowland and Mary Jane Trammell.
I didn't find them on the 1900 census, but much of Nantahala Township is very dim and difficult to read, so I could have easily missed them.
George Evans was born April 1865 (per 1900 census) in Macon Co, NC. He was home with his parents in 1870 ("George" age 8) and in 1880 ("George" age 15).
In 1900 George was listed as head of household, though still single. His widowed mother was living with him, as was a nephew, also named George Evans.
