Ann Eliza Watson was born ca 1836/37 in Brunswick Co., NC (presumably).

I dont know who her parents are, but she could be a child of Benjamin L. Watson and Mariah Shaw. They did have an apparent daughter her age with them on the 1840 census, aged under 5 (born ca 1835/40) who is otherwise unidentified. Is it Ann E. Watson (c1837)? No way to be sure without additional evidence.

I wasnt able to find Ann E. Watson on the 1850 census (nor Benjamin L. Watson for that matter). Since Benjamin is also missing, it is reasonable to assume that Ann was with him, wherever he was.

In 1860 Ann was living with widow Elizabeth Benton in Brunswick County. She was just a couple of houses from Stephen Mintz and wife Rebecca C. Watson, who is probably a sister of Benjamin L. Watson. I found Elizabeth Benton and Calidonia on the 1850 census with Moses Benton (c1797). At that time the household contained: Moses Benton 53; Elizabeth 32; Mary 26; William 22 and Caldonia 7. It isn't clear whether Elizabeth is Moses wife or daughter. I don't know how the Bentons and Ann E. Watson are related. Perhaps they are not related.

Ann E. Watson had a child ca 1864 and another ca 1867 in Brunswick. She wasnt married so they took her surname. There is a Bastardy Bond dated Nov 1867 for an Elizabeth A. Watson. This is certainly her, though her middle name was Eliza, not Elizabeth. A common mix-up though. She was the bondsman along with Alfred D. Ward and Harry Williams.

I wasnt able to find Ann E. Watson on the 1870 census. This particular census is really bad in North Carolina with numerous people missing or improperly recorded. This is true in Brunswick County as well.

I did find Ann on the 1880 census in Brunswick. She was in North West Township. She and the children were listed as mulattos on this census: Ann E. Watson, 45, (marital status blank), born NC-NC-NC; George W. 16 son; Anna E. 13 daughter; Amos? Sellers, black, 66, boarder, single; Champ Artis, black, 35, boarder, single.

She was on the 1900 census in Brunswick with her son George. She was listed much older than she had been on other records. They were in Northwest Township. George Watson, head, white, June 1864, 35, single; Eliza A. mother, white, May 1822, 78, widowed (had been marked single, but written over), 4 children born, 2 still living; Andrew, boarder, black, Aug 1883, 16; John W. boarder, black, July 1888, 11; Robert L. Boarder, black, Sep 1894, 5.

They are still in Brunswick for the 1910 census in North West Township: George W. Watson, Head, white, 45 single; Annie E., mother, white, 76, widow, 2 children born, 2 living; Robert R. Lee, nephew, mulatto, 16; Andrew J. Sellers, nephew, mulatto, 25 single; Annie E. Beaty, sister, mulatto, 42, married once, 8 years, 3 children born, 3 living.

I didnt find Ann E. Watson on the 1920 census. She wasnt with her son George. She probably died before then.

Children of Ann Eliza Watson. Ann had four children (per 1900 census), only two of whom lived to adulthood. That would be George W. Watson (1864), who apparently never married, and Ann E. Watson (c1867) who married Frank Beaty. She had three Sellers children prior to her marriage to Mr. Beaty.
