I (Marty Grant) am a 5th Great Grand Nephew of James Nail Bryson.

James N. Bryson was born ca 1794/95 (per 1850 and 1870 census) in South Carolina (per 1850 and 1870 census), presumably in Pendleton District (now Anderson County). James' middle name is generally listed as "Naill" or "Nail" after his mother's maiden name, but I don't know if this is proven or not.

James is a son of Andrew Bryson (c1752) and Agness Nail as proven by a Pension application that James N. Bryson applied for in 1853 based on his father's Revolutionary War Service (it was rejected), but that proves he was a son of Andrew Bryson.

James N. Bryson was born somewhere in old Pendleton District, SC where his father was living at the time. He went with the family back to Iredell Co, NC for a few years, but probably did most of his growing up in Haywood County (now Jackson County), NC.

James was apparently home with his parents for the 1800 census, aged "under 10" (born ca 1790/1800). Shortly after this, the family joined most of the rest of the family in Buncombe (later Haywood) County.

James was probably with his parents in 1810, but I have not yet found his parents on that census.

James Bryson (listed as "James Bryson Jr") obtained a marriage bond on 22 Dec 1813 in Haywood Co, NC to marry Anna Gross. The marriage bond listed her as a daughter of Thomas Gross. William Morrow was the bondsman. I don't know  how or if William Morrow was related to the Bryson family. He could have been related to the Gross family, or not related to either family, just a friend or neighbor. (Usually a bondsman is someone close). Anna was born ca 1796/97 (per 1850 census) somewhere in South Carolina (per 1850 and 1870 census). Her father was Thomas Gross, but I don't know who her mother was. Her father Thomas Gross married Sarah Bryson in the 1810's (Sarah was James N. Bryson's first cousin, daughter of James H. Bryson).

James Bryson was listed on the 1820 census in Haywood Co, NC. He lived in the area that is now part of Caney Fork Township in Jackson County. This census was alphabetized, so we can't be sure who his neighbors were, nor where he lived exactly.

On 29 Jul 1831 James Cathey (James N. Bryson's brother-in-law) sold land to James N. Bryson, in Macon County. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book A, page 116).

The next day, 30 Jul 1831, James N. Bryson ("of Haywood") sold this land to his cousin William H. Bryson. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book A, page 117).

James Bryson was listed as a Voter in the 1835 Congressional Elections, from Caney Fork Precinct of Haywood County.

In 1836 James N. Bryson witnessed a deed between Andrew Cathey and Henry Queen (both of Macon Co, NC). (Macon Co, NC Deed Book A, page 288).

James N. Bryson was still in Haywood Co, NC for the 1840 census. His sons Andrew Bryson and Thomas Bryson were listed just two and three houses away.

On 29 Sep 1840, Eli McKee, the Sheriff of Macon Co, NC sold 55 acres of land on Elijah Creek that belonged to James N. Bryson. It was sold at public auction to satisfy a court judgment. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book C page 1540).

On 29 Mar 1842 James N. Bryson ("of Haywood") sold 55 acres in Macon Co, NC to Zachariah Peak. He mentioned it was land he had purchased in 1822 at a land sale in Waynesvile. The witnesses were Abraham Moore and Jacob Stuart. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book C page 1531).

Between 1842 and 1850 James moved his family to Union Co, GA where he was listed on the 1850 census. Based on his neighbors, I believe he was in the section of Union County that became Towns County in 1856.

Although this region of Union County became Towns County in 1856, James and family weren't there to see the change. They had moved to neighboring Gilmer County, GA before 1853. James N. Bryson declared himself a resident of Gilmer Co, GA in 1853 when he applied for a Revolutionary War Pension based on his father's service. The Pension was rejected based on lack of proof of the service.

I have not been able to locate them on the 1860 census yet.

James and family were back in the Caney Fork Creek region in Jackson County, NC for the 1870 census. This was the same area where they had lived before (when the area was still part of Haywood County).

I don't know when James and Ann died, but since I was unable to locate them on the 1880 census, I suspect they died in the 1870's in Jackson County, NC.

Children

James and Ann had numerous children, per the various census records. Some apparent children, as listed in the 1820-1840 records have not been identified. Ethel Updike included 10 children, and Lawrence included 9 children. I believe I have identified one or two more. Not all of these children are proven to be theirs, as far as I know.

Thomas J. Bryson (c1814)

Andrew Bryson (c1816)

Elizabeth Bryson (c1826)

Mary Bryson (c1826)

Sarah Bryson (c1829)

James Nail Bryson (c1831)

Isabella Bryson (c1831)

Rachel Bryson (c1834)

Tempey Caroline Bryson (1839)

Joseph Holmes Bryson (1840)

Thomas J. Bryson was born ca 1813/14 in Haywood Co, NC (now Jackson County). Both Ethel Updike and Lawrence Wood had Thomas J. Bryson as a son of John Bryson, based only on the "W.T.J. Bryson" who was named as a brother of Andrew Bryson in his estate papers (1884). However, that "W.T.J. Bryson" is not the same as Thomas J. Bryson. I have no direct proof that Thomas is a son of James N. Bryson, but it seems highly likely. He was listed just three houses from James on the 1840 census. In 1850 he was in Cherokee Co, NC in the same area just over the border from where James N. Bryson was residing in Union Co, GA (Brasstown area, now Towns Co, GA). The bondsman for Thomas' marriage was Samuel B. Cathey a son of Elizabeth Bryson Cathey, a sister of James N. Bryson. In 1860 Thomas was still in the Brasstown area, but this time in Towns Co, GA. By 1870 he was back in the Caney Fork area of Jackson Co, NC just a few houses from James N. Bryson and family. Like I said, no direct proof, but circumstantial evidence showing it to be likely. I ran this theory by Lawrence Wood and he told me he was always troubled by Thomas J. Bryson being listed where he had him, because he just didn't fit there. He liked my theory, and said it was probably correct. Hopefully we can find some direct proof someday. See Thomas' own page for additional information.

Andrew Bryson was born ca 1815/16 in SC (probably Pendleton District). Ethel Updike listed a son "Andrew" for James N. Bryson, and listed him born ca 1822, but with no additional data on him. Lawrence Wood also included a son Andrew, but had no additional data. I'm not sure that this Andrew is the correct one, but he seems to be the only one around who fits. See Andrew's own page for additional information.

Elizabeth Bryson was born ca 1825/26 in the Caney Fork area of Haywood Co, NC (now Jackson County). She was home with her parents for the 1850 census. She was gone by 1860, so probably married or died by then. Both Updike and Wood mention her, but neither list who she married.

Mary Bryson was born ca 1826 (per E. Updike, page 140). She married Jacob Schuy (per E. Updike, page 140) of Jefferson Co, TN. She mentions that Mary was seen in Knoxville, TN in 1894. They must have married before 1850, and went to TN right away, as I didn't find them in Union Co, GA with the rest of the family. Lawrence Wood mentioned Mary Bryson, but gave no additional information on her.

Sarah Bryson was born ca 1828/29 in the Caney Fork area of Haywood Co, NC (now Jackson County). She was home with her parents for the 1850 census. She was gone by 1860, so probably had married by then. Ethel Updike mentioned her (page 140) and that she married a Mr. Brock and lived in Knoxville, TN. I have the name "Blaine Brock" from somewhere, perhaps Lawrence Wood told me that, but it isn't in his book. He mentions Sarah, but gives no additional data.

James Nail Bryson (Jr) was born ca 1830/31 in the Caney Fork area of Haywood Co, NC (now Jackson County). He was home with his parents for the 1850 census. By 1860 he was married to Mary Reynolds (maiden name per E. Updike page 141) and living in Cherokee Co, NC.

Ethel Updike has additional data on this family on page 171 of her book. She shows that they moved to IN.

Isabella Bryson was born ca 1831 (per E. Updike page 140). E. Updike shows that she lived in Knoxville, TN. She was not with her parents in 1850. L. Wood also mentions her, but offers no additional information.

Rachel Bryson was born ca 1833/34 in the Caney Fork area of Haywood Co, NC (now Jackson County). She was home with her parents for the 1850 census. She was gone by 1860, so married or died by then. She isn't mentioned by Lawrence Wood in his book. E. Updike includes her, and on page 141 stats she married Feb 1851 to "Stephen Southie", however, this is an error, as that was a different Rachel Bryson, a daughter of John Bryson and Jane Rogers. I don't know what became of this Rachel.

Tempey Caroline Bryson was born 29 Mar 1839 (per E. Updike page 141) and died 27 Feb 1915, a spinster (same source). She was mentioned by L. Wood as well, but no details given. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census.

Joseph Holmes Bryson was born 16 Jul 1840 (per E. Updike page 141 and L. Wood page 140) in the Caney Fork area of Haywood Co, NC (now Jackson County). He married Nancy Caroline Cruise on 22 Feb 1861 (per E. Updike, page 141) in Cherokee Co, NC. Nancy Cruise is my 1st cousin 4 times removed, and more closely related to me than her husband. They were listed twice on the 1870 census in Jackson Co, NC, once in household # 80, and again in household # 154 (with his parents).
