!NOTE:Cornelius was possibly born out of wedlock. Sharon Stephenson said that his Civil War record showed him to be a cousin to Francis Hensley, son of James Hensley and Mary Erwin; She also said his mother might be a Shelton. Here is her e-mail to me:
===Marty, Our ancestor, Cornelius Hensley is listed as a son of James Hensley in some reports. He may have been raised by James Hensley, but Cornelius calls Francis, s/o James Hensley, his "cousin" in his Civil War records. Francis also calls Cornelius his "cousin" in his Civil War records. This would indicate that Cornelius is not the child of James and MaryAnn Ervin Hensley. We have heard family rumors that Cornelius was a Shelton who was raised by Hensleys. We know that Baxter Shelton is listed as a cousin who joined the Union army at the same time Cornelius, Francis, and Amos (Francis brother) joined company M, 1st Tennessee Volunteer Calvary. We have heard that Sarah Shelton (don't know for sure, but think she was the d/o Roderick and Sarah Briggs Shelton) was visiting Cornelius for an extended visit at the age of 103 when she was bitten by a copperhead snake and died (told to us by Rena Shelton of Shelton Laurel). Do you have any thoughts on how Cornelius may be related to all of these people? We are desperately seeking his parents, but not desperately enough to accept at face value the information we've seen so far. We are impressed with your quality of work on your many web pages. You have obviously put a lot of time and effort into the research to verify the information you are publishing. We are attempting to also verify all info we get before publishing our family history.
