I (Marty Grant) am not related to Allen Grant as far as I know, but I am very interested in this family.

Allen Grant was born ca 1823/24 in NC, presumably in Wayne Co, NC. I strongly feel that he is a son of Jesse Grant and his first wife (name unknown). I don't have proof that they are father and son, other than both being in Wayne Co, NC and moving to Cumberland Co, NC together in the 1840's, and going back to Wayne Co, NC together in the 1850's. Early census records show Jesse with a son this age, so it seems a reasonable assumption that Allen is his son.

Allen Grant was apparently home with his father Jesse Grant for the 1830 and 1840 census in Wayne Co, NC. During the 1840's, both Jesse and Allen moved to Cumberland Co, NC. Allen married Matilda --- during this same timeframe, but I don't know if they married in Wayne County or Cumberland County (no record found in Cumberland, and the marriages for Wayne County for this timeframe are lost).

Allen and Matilda were listed on the 1850 census in Cumberland Co, NC in the Eastern Division. Jesse Grant was also in the eastern division, but not listed close by.  There were two Daniels children residing with Allen and Matilda. She was old enough for these to be her children, so perhaps she was married to a Mr. Daniels prior to marrying Allen Grant.

They must have been homesick, for both Allen and his father Jesse moved back to Wayne Co, NC before 1860. Allen was listed on the 1860 census in Wayne County in Indian Springs township, not too far from his father Jesse.

Allen must have died before 1870 (perhaps in the Civil War?), for the 1870 census index shows his widow Matilda Grant as head of household in Indian Springs township. I don't have this record yet, but I will get it.

Children

Allen and Matilda seemed to have only two children: Julia Grant, born ca 1855, and Virginia Grant, born ca 1864.
